Download or read book PENTATEUCHAL ANALYSIS INSPIR written by Edwin Cone Bissell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pentateuchal Analysis and Inspiration The statement that the Bible should occupy a central posi tion in thought and education, without distinction of secular and religious, conveys very different impressions to different minds. To some, it seems to threaten a return to the intellect ual follies of the middle ages. The school-men held as their favorite maxim that all other learning was but the handmaid of theology. If the Bible be made central in all thought, in all science, will it not be necessary to forsake the inductive method, and return to a' priori reasoning? No man in his right mind would advocate deserting the inductive method, but the placing of the Bible in this position of supremacy involves no such return to mediaeval methods. To make the Bible central, or rather to make Biblical theology central, in all thought and in all educa tion is simply to include the most important of all facts in the inductions we make. We plead for an extension of the inductive method, rather than for a limitation or desertion of its use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular textbook regards the Pentateuch as a literary whole, with a single theme that binds it together. The overarching theme is the partial fulfilment of the promises to the patriarchs. Though the method of the book is holistic, the origin and growth of the theme is also explored using the methods of traditional source analysis. An important chapter explores the theological function of the Pentateuch both in the community for which the Pentateuch was first composed and in our own time. For this second, enlarged edition, the author has written an Epilogue reassessing the theme of the Pentateuch from a more current postmodern perspective.

Book excerpt: Noted Old Testament scholar Lloyd R. Bailey, Sr., provides a helpful methodology for interpreting the first five books of the Bible. He analyzes the text in detail, covering such topics as the concept of Torah, the literary forms that make up the Pentateuch, and the theories concerning its authorship. He also examines the Pentateuch's different levels of meaning, the authors' original intentions, how the first audiences received these writings, and their present-day relevance. Then, by exploring six carefully selected passages from the Pentateuch, Dr. Bailey objectively and systematically guides the reader in an independent investigation of these same points.

Book The Pentateuch as Narrative

Download or read book The Pentateuch as Narrative written by John H. Sailhamer and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholars studying the first five books of the Bible either attempt to dissect it into various pre-pentateuchal documents or, at the very least, analyze Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy as separate, self-contained documents. The Pentateuch As Narrative focuses on the narrative and literary continuity of the Pentateuch as a whole. It seeks to disclose how the original Jewish readers may have viewed this multivolume work of Moses. Its central thesis is that the Pentateuch was written from the perspective of one who had lived under the Law of the Covenant established at Mount Sinai and had seen its failure to produce genuine trust in the Lord God of Israel. In this context, the Pentateuch pointed the reader forward to the hope of the New Covenant, based on divine faithfulness. Throughout the commentary Dr. Sailhamer pays close attention to and interacts with a wide range of classical and contemporary literature on the Pentateuch, written by Jews, Catholics, and Protestants.

Book The Pentateuch

Download or read book The Pentateuch written by John Van Seters and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-08-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the Pentateuch reviews the various historical-critical attempts to read it that arise from notions about the social evolution of Israel's religion and culture. Is the Pentateuch an accumulation of folk traditions, a work of ancient historiography, a document legitimizing religious reform? The present book, in dialogue with competing views, advocates a compositional model that recognizes the social and historical diversity of the literary strata. It argues that a proto-Pentateuchal author created a comprehensive history from Genesis to Numbers that was written as a prologue to the Deuteronomistic History (Deuteronomy to 2 Kings) in the exilic period and later expanded by a Priestly writer to make it the foundational document of the Jerusalem temple community.
