Each curriculum prepares for a specific type of teaching position. The two year's work of the normal school is divided into four semesters. The work of the first semester is the same for all students. A large purpose of the work of the first semester is to acquaint students with the require ments for successful teaching in the different grades so that they -may be able to decide intelligently in what grade or grades they prefer to teach. The course entitled Introduction to Teaching which includes observation and participation in the training school is especially designed to aid students in a wise selection of a curriculum. At the end of the first semester students are asked to select one of the four curricula for the purpose of specializing in a specific field of teaching. The work of each curriculum must be completed in its entirety. Students may be granted the privilege of changing from one curriculum to another only on condition that the prescribed courses of any curriculum so selected must be completed before a certificate of graduation is granted. To keep them there is a far greater expense, and the probabilities are far less that they will ever be Christians, than if you give them an education such as the State now affords them. But the system does not allow us to teach religion in any positive way! No. But it allows and even sanctions us to do a great deal that leads to positive religion. If that were all, we could also say that many Sunday-schools teach religion in no positive way. And yet we feel sure that Sunday-schools can be so conducted that they do teach religion. Shall we entirely abandon the great pet of America, be cause it fails in some hands and in some localities, to answer the end for which it was instituted? The remedy is in another direction. What is true of the Sunday-schools is, in this respect, largely true of the public schools. Place them in proper hands, and you will get good results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Notes on Pennsylvania's Public School System: With Suggestions as to Needed Changes As a matter of fact, Pennsylvania has had the township system, not since 1882, but for more than 70 years. Since 1836 every township, borough and city has been a school district, and the sub-district sys tem never prevailed except in a comparatively small number of dis tricts called independent districts. The creation of these in dependent districts is now generally admitted to have been a mistake. It interferes with the development of a rational sys tem of high schools, and imposes unnecessary taxation upon the owners of the less valuable farms. With the exception of these inde pendent districts, Pennsylvania has escaped the evils of the district (often called sub-district) system, under which the schoolhouse with the community sending to it is the unit of school administration. Other states are still struggling to escape these evils, and in some ih stances have found it impossible to secure what the wisdom of Sena tor Smith gave us in the 30s. And yet, the Carnegie Foundation has the temerity to assert that Pennsylvania has never come into a conception of education from the standpoint of the whole people. The only ground for such an asser tion is the fact that Philadelphia was exempted from the jurisdiction of the State Superintendent and from other acts of Assembly, and this was due to previous legislation, which was believed to be superior to the common school law, and which may have given rise to the taunt that Philadelphians believe themselves to be made of finer dust than are the other people of the Commonwealth.
