Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 - September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the fireside poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings, as well as his 1866 book Snow-Bound. Whittier was first introduced to poetry by a teacher. His sister sent his first poem, "The Exile's Departure", to the Newburyport Free Press without his permission, and its editor, William Lloyd Garrison, published it on June 8, 1826. Garrison as well as another local editor encouraged Whittier to attend the recently opened Haverhill Academy.

This book was released on 2018-12-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Pilgrim, and Other Poems I DO not remember in what part of Moore's works I once read the first tremulous remarks he made when, for the first time, he committed a volume of poetry to the world, and appealed to it as a poet. Plays which have' only appeared in dramatic form, stray verses which magazines have absorbed, look very different to the writer when first he contemplates them in the ambitious form of a book, and trembles for his own venture. May this find lenient judges and kindly friends. And let me express the h0pe that the political verses which form part of it may be taken in the spirit in which they are written, of freedom from offence. I have carefully revised them with that view, conscious that ex pressions which may pass for the moment should have no longer life than' cc gue m'wnt les plazirantm'es. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Land: From Plymouth to Provincetown in Pastel Born of the sea, and the spume of its wash; bred to the wind, and the wild bird's cry; its secret is murmur of wave to pine; its song is the song of the warm blue sky! When the glaciers went over, and the clay with the rocks went under; storms leaped the ridges, and cut the contours; and life began with the heaped up sand! Between the bay and the ocean, burning winds, for ages, have signed the sun's signature upon marsh and bog, scrubland and forest! The shore birds nest the grasses, Peewits and sandpipers Flit the salt edges; Bittern and shelldrake Follow the creeks To the ponds and plashes! A land of homing; the homing of sea winds and wild wings! The homing of color and music, of bird song and sunshine and sunsets! The homing of star faith, of moon myths and legends; The homing of happiness; human illusions and memories! A voice sings to the morning its far off paean of conquest, And chants to the evening its solemn cadence of rest! Book Musings of the Pilgrim Bard

Download or read book Musings of the Pilgrim Bard written by Scott Cummins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musings of the Pilgrim Bard: A Book of Poems As an old time friend and neighbor who has known and admired the Pilgrim Bard for nearly a quarter of a century, I write this brief sketch as a labor of love. Orange Scott Cummins was born in the good old state of Ohio fifty-seven years ago, but at the early age of two years he concluded that it was the part of wisdom for a young man to go west and grow up with the country, and taking his par ents by the hand he started for the then new state of Iowa. It was a wilderness where the family settled. Indians were plentiful and here the future bard became acquainted with the Noble Red Man. The wild free life of the savage appealed to the romantic temperament of the boy. Young Indians were often his playmates. In the Indian camps 'he spent much of his time, and long before he had reached the estate of manhood he was familiar with Indian customs and Indian legends. This fact was probably responsible for the story that was set afloat that a white baby died and that the Indian chief, Gonoe, sympathizing with the grief-stricken mother, brought to her a handsome Indian pappoose which the white mother took and reared as her own, and that in course of years this pappoose grew up to be a poet. This tale, how ever, is legendary. I doubt its authenticity. When the war broke out young Cummins, though hardlyfifteen, burned with a patriotic desire to be a soldier, and a soldier he became. 'as a member of Con. A, 3d Iowa cavalry, he served his country well. At the end of the war he came back to Iowa, but the restlessness of the frontiersman was in his blood. Neighbors had become too plentiful in Iowa and he moved to Kansas. In the early seventies he settled among the canyons of Barber county, at that time the favor ite grazing ground of countless thousands of buffalo and the chosen habitation of the deer, the antelope, the wolf and the mountain lion. On the banks of a clear running and beautiful little stream, which bore the unromantic cognomen of Mule creek, he built his cabin, naming it Last Chance, because it was the last chance the pilgrims heading for the still further western wilds would have to get a meal under a roof. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim's Scrip: Or Wit and Wisdom of George Meredith; With Selections From His Poetry, and an Introduction A few years ago a copy of one of Meredith's novels was a rarity in this country; but now there are two complete new editions of his works; and, despite Mr. Meredith's own modest plea, "that the best of me is in my books," there are a large number of his admirers and friends who crave a less distant and more personal acquaintance with him. To meet this wish, and making use of all the material we could find, we have prepared this bare and inadequate sketch, humbly hoping that we shall not infringe upon the mans rightfully guarded personality. George Meredith was born in Hampshire, in the year 1828. His parents died when he was quite young, and left him to be educated as a ward in Chancery. Of these parents little has been told the general public; but it is said that the blood of working ancestors flows in Meredith's veins, and perhaps this accounts for the sympathetic insight with which many of his homely characters are drawn. He received his early education in Germany, where he remained until fifteen years old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
