Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most engaging of such objects is the chest, about which this book is concerned. An ancient style of furniture, at once for sitting and for storage, the chest became the repository of an individual's goods: his (or her) clothes, linens, treasures. When in the eighteenth-century the Germans came in droves to America--to Pennsylvania--they brought the chest and the nascent individualism it represented with them. The majority of these pieces were either finished or simply painted, but the minority of inlaid or paint-decorated chests are the classic pieces of Pennsylvania-German decorative art to this day. -- Pg. 14.

Book The Early Decorated Furniture of the Pennsylvania Dutch 18th Century Bieber Family of Craftsmen Other Folk Artists

Download or read book The Early Decorated Furniture of the Pennsylvania Dutch 18th Century Bieber Family of Craftsmen Other Folk Artists written by Richard L. T. Orth and published by Masthof Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here and abroad, no other Pennsylvania Dutch motifs have come to be prized more than those created by John Bieber (1763-1825) of Oley Township, Berks County. Without a doubt, the hallmark of a Bieber dower chest (hope chest) is its huge, bulbous, flat hearts diligently laid out with compass. The heart motif was the most reoccurring symbol among 18th-century immigrant artisans. This book celebrates the craftsmanship and history of these Americana pieces of furniture. Color pictures capture the beauty of these various works of art and are a step to cataloging them before they are lost to time. (164pp. color illus. Masthof Press, 2019.)

Book Pennsylvania Dutch Stuff

Download or read book Pennsylvania Dutch Stuff written by Earl F. Robacker and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative work was, at the time of its first publication, the first full-length book to cover in detail the collecting of Pennsylvania "Dutch" furnishings and crafts. It was subsequently redesigned and enlarged, to make it again available in this more ample format it deserves. The Pennsylvania Dutch country may be said to have been "discovered" by collectors in the 1920s and 1930s. These unique people, with their old-world customs and colorful folk art, have created in America an authentic genre, with a flavor much in vogue among experienced decorators, as well as amateur collectors. Earl F. Robacker, a native Pennsylvanian and a collector himself, introduces this volume with a general discussion of characteristic Dutch country art forms and craftsmanship, emphasizing its authentic "peasant" quality in contrast to the more elegant styles of other early American furnishings. Chapter by chapter he discusses typical pieces of furniture, china, kitchenware and other articles, giving careful descriptions of each important piece, its availability, and most important, the rules for a collector to keep in mind when on the trail of real Pennsylvania Dutch "stuff." This volume offers a thorough orientation in Pennsylvania Dutch country antiques and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the general subject of old furnishings. As the first volume to assemble the scattered and fragmentary information on the subject, it is an invaluable guide for those who merely want to achieve authentic atmosphere in home decoration. Many fine illustrations supplement the text, and a partial list of museum collections gives additional guidance. The book contains a full discussion of the basic principles of Pennsylvania Dutch decoration, and an appraisal of the quality of reproductions available on the market.

Book Architecture and Artifacts of the Pennsylvania Germans Constructing Identity in Early America

Download or read book Architecture and Artifacts of the Pennsylvania Germans Constructing Identity in Early America written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a mid-eighteenth-century group, the so-called Pennsylvania Germans, build their cultural identity in the face of ethnic stereotyping, nostalgic ideals, and the views imposed by outside contemporaries? Numerous forces create a group's identity, including the views of outsiders, insiders, and the shaping pressure of religious beliefs, but to understand the process better, we must look to clues from material culture. Cynthia Falk explores the relationship between ethnicity and the buildings, personal belongings, and other cultural artifacts of early Pennsylvania German immigrants and their descendants. Such material culture has been the basis of stereotyping Pennsylvania Germans almost since their arrival. Falk warns us against the typical scholarly overemphasis on Pennsylvania Germans' assimilation into an English way of life. Rather, she demonstrates that more than anything, socioeconomic status and religious affiliation influenced the character of the material culture of Pennsylvania Germans. Her work also shows how early Pennsylvania Germans defined their own identities.

Book American Furniture

Download or read book American Furniture written by Oscar P. Fitzgerald and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the latest scholarship, this comprehensive, lavishly illustrated survey tells the story of the evolution of American furniture from the 17th century to the present. Not viewed in isolation, furniture is placed in its broader cultural, historic, and aesthetic context. The focus is not only on the urban masterpieces of 18th century William and Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal styles but also on the work of numerous rural cabinetmakers. Special chapters explore Windsor chairs, Shaker, and Pennsylvania German furniture which do not follow the mainstream style progression. Picturesque and anti-classical explain Victorian furniture including Rococo, Renaissance, and Eastlake. Mission and Arts and Crafts furniture introduce the 20th century. Another chapter identifies the eclectic revivals such as Early American that dominated the mass market throughout much of the 20th century. After World War II American designers created many of the Mid-Century Modern icons that are much sought after by collectors today. The rise of studio furniture and furniture as art which include some of the most creative and imaginative furniture produced in the 20th and 21st centuries caps the review of four centuries of American furniture. A final chapter advises on how to evaluate the authenticity of both traditional and modern furniture and how to preserve it for posterity. With over 800 photos including 24 pages of color, this fully illustrated text is the authoritative reference work.
