This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maggie of Virginsburg a Story of the Pennsylvania Dutch Henry and I had been class-mates for two weeks in our village school without ever having noticed each other particularly, and it was not until the day of his tragic clash with the teacher, Miss Schmincky, that my eye became focused upon him as a male creature disporting in his small person thrilling heroism, tragedy, comedy - all those wonders of life for which my hot young heart yearned, though I was not definitely aware of it, for I was ten years old, and Henry was twelve. It was not I alone, but the entire school, that found in Henry's conflict with the teacher that afternoon an exciting diversion. But it was probably only I who saw also, for the first time, heroic adventure manifested before my very eyes instead of merely at second hand on the printed page; and life became suddenly transformed, for the moment, from a chronic state of longing to full realization and satisfaction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fanatic or Christian?: A Story of the Pennsylvania Dutch Stella Swartz looked at her younger sister, Gertrude, with sharp, calculating scrutiny. Was it going to be a difficult task to manage her in the impending crisis? That it would be an impossible one never occurred to her; for when Stella Swartz greatly desired a thing, obstacles in the way of attainment only stimulated her indomitable energies. It seemed almost funny to imagine any difficulty in managing Gertrude in any contingency; in turning that amiable, yielding creature peremptorily Right-about-Face to march where her superior officer commanded; for Stella was, and always had been, a born Major General; while Gertrude, too good-natured as well as too indolent to protest, had all her life let herself be shoved here and there by Stella like a pawn on a chess board. Nevertheless - Stella's keen examination of the young girl, four years her junior, seated on the grass a few feet away from her, grew sharper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society, Vol. 7: Proceedings and Addresses at Philadelphia, October 25, 1896 We praise Thee, O Lord, the everlasting Father, and Thy Son, our adorable Redeemer! Thou art God of heaven and earth in all generations. Thou hast formed the world and given to it life, and breath, and all things. Thou hast made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on the face of the earth. Thou hast determined the times before appointed. Thou hast marked the channels and directed the courses of the ancient and ever - broadening stream of history. Thou hast beheld, from age to age the westward surging, crest after crest, of the innumerable waves of the races and nations and tribes of the children of men - Phrygian and Pelasgian, Hun and Vandal, Goth and Visigoth, Mogul and Tartar, Dane and Saxon, Viking and Norman, Portuguese and Spaniard, Dutchman and Frenchman, Swiss and scots-irish, Puritan, Quaker and German. Thou art the God of our Fathers! With their strength and heart and soul they did worship Thee. From the ash of steel and the tempest of ame, from the exactions of royalty and the edict of exile, from the persecution of government and the grinding of poverty, they came over the great deep, O Lord, with Thy Word written in their hearts, and songs to Thee rising on their lips. Imploring Thy blessing did they press to these free and untrodden forests of Penn, and unto Thee did they lift their supplication in every hour of peril. They were Thine, O Father, as we are Thine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When visitors travel to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, they are encouraged to consume the local culture by way of "regional specialties" such as cream-filled whoopie pies and deep-fried fritters of every variety. Yet many of the dishes and confections visitors have come to expect from the region did not emerge from Pennsylvania Dutch culture but from expectations fabricated by local-color novels or the tourist industry. At the same time, other less celebrated (and rather more delicious) dishes, such as sauerkraut and stuffed pork stomach, have been enjoyed in Pennsylvania Dutch homes across various localities and economic strata for decades. Celebrated food historian and cookbook writer William Woys Weaver delves deeply into the history of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine to sort fact from fiction in the foodlore of this culture. Through interviews with contemporary Pennsylvania Dutch cooks and extensive research into cookbooks and archives, As American as Shoofly Pie offers a comprehensive and counterintuitive cultural history of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine, its roots and regional characteristics, its communities and class divisions, and, above all, its evolution into a uniquely American style of cookery. Weaver traces the origins of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine as far back as the first German settlements in America and follows them forward as New Dutch Cuisine continues to evolve and respond to contemporary food concerns. His detailed and affectionate chapters present a rich and diverse portrait of a living culinary practice—widely varied among different religious sects and localized communities, rich and poor, rural and urban—that complicates common notions of authenticity. Because there's no better way to understand food culture than to practice it, As American as Shoofly Pie's cultural history is accompanied by dozens of recipes, drawn from exacting research, kitchen-tested, and adapted to modern cooking conventions. From soup to Schnitz, these dishes lay the table with a multitude of regional tastes and stories. Hockt eich hie mit uns, un esst eich satt—Sit down with us and eat yourselves full!

Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize Finalist | New York Times Bestseller | A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick | A New York Times Book Review Notable Book | TIME Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of the Year Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, The Washington Post; O: The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, Refinery29, and Buzzfeed From Ann Patchett, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth, comes a powerful, richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are. At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures. Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

American Folklife, a unique collection of essays dedicated to the presentation of American tradition, broadens our understanding of the regional differences and ethnic folkways that color American life. Folklife research examines the entire context of everyday life in past and present. It includes every aspect of traditional life, from regional architecture through the full range of material culture into spiritual culture, folk religion, witchcraft, and other forms of folk belief. This collection is especially useful in its application to American society, where countless influences from European, American Indian, and African cultural backgrounds merge. American Folklife relates folklife research to history, anthropology, cultural geography, architectural history, ethnographic film, folk technology, folk belief, and ethnic tensions in American society. It documents the folk-cultural background that is the root of our society.

Book Powwowing Among the Pennsylvania Dutch

Download or read book Powwowing Among the Pennsylvania Dutch written by David W. Kriebel and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known in Pennsylvania Dutch as brauche or braucherei, the folk-healing practice of powwowing was thought to draw upon the power of God to heal all manner of physical and spiritual ills. Yet some people believed, and still believe today, that this power to heal came not from God, but from the devil. Controversy over powwowing came to a climax in 1929 with the York Hex Murder Trial, in which one powwower from York County, Pennsylvania, killed another powwower (who, he believed, had placed a hex on him). In Powwowing Among the Pennsylvania Dutch, David Kriebel examines the practice of powwowing in a scholarly light and shows that, contrary to popular belief, the practice of powwowing is still active today. Because powwowing lacks extensive scholarly documentation, David Kriebel&’s research is both a groundbreaking inquiry and a necessity for the scholar of Pennsylvania German history and culture. The fact that powwowing is still practiced may come as a surprise to some readers, but included in this book are the interviews Kriebel had with living powwowers during his seven years of fieldwork in southeastern and central Pennsylvania. Along with these interviews, Kriebel includes biographical sketches of seven living powwowers; descriptions of powwowing as it was practiced in years past, compared with the practice today; a discussion of the belief of powwowing as healing; and a discussion of the future, if any, of powwowing, and what it will take for powwowing to continue to survive.
