Book excerpt: Headspace oxygen contents of several designated drums containing -l inch and -1⁄4 inch coal were measured. These measurements were later discontinued by agreement with the Project Manager, as the leakage of plastic drums and buckets has been well documented. During the current reporting period a total of 65 data printouts were distributed. In addition, 10 special data requests were fulfilled by either search/sort and printout or creation of a data disk, resulting in distribution of limited information on 4,479 samples. Several preliminary requests for Sample Bank and Data Base information and price quotations have also been handled. Four hundred copies of the 61-page second edition of the booklet T̀̀he Penn State Coal Sample Bank and Data Base ̀̀were received from the printer. Changes in format have allowed increased content in fewer pages, to reduce printing and mailing costs. Three hundred thirty-nine copies were distributed. Data generated on samples DECS-1 through DECS-14 were added to the Penn State Coal Data Base. Map reference data were verified for all 14 samples.

At the beginning of the contract, a new type of container was evaluated for long-term storage of coal samples ranging in quantity from a few grams to over 10 kg (22 lbs). Gieseler fluid behavior, oxidation of pyrite to sulfates, loss of heating value, and other properties were monitored over time. Based on preliminary results, these foil and polyethylene laminate bags were believed to be a significant improvement over the drums, buckets and cans previously used. Use of the bags was therefore instituted with DECS-1, the first sample collected under the contract. Twenty-two DECS samples were collected, ranging in rank from lignite to anthracite and representing the five most productive coal provinces of the US. Over 6500 containers of DECS samples were created under the contract and 750 containers of 34 PSOC samples are supported by the contract. Each sample was characterized by proximate and ultimate analysis, petrographic (vitrinite reflectance and maceral) analysis, physical and thermoplastic testing, and inorganic element analysis. The resulting data, and geologic data on each sample, were entered in a data base which can be used to produce a formatted five-page or one-page printout for each sample. An interactively operated data base can be searched, sorted or summarized to produce tables of selected data or to identify samples meeting a requestor's criteria. During the period covered, 2,313 printouts, and 204 special data reports resulting in distribution of data on 34,086 samples, were provided on request.

Book excerpt: For each sample, one 30-gallon drum containing approximately 90 lb of coal at -1/4 inch was designated for headspace oxygen analysis and coal quality monitoring at yearly intervals. Headspace oxygen analysis and retrieval of a 5-lb sample for coal analysis have begun. Headspace oxygen contents are shown in Table 1. Preparation and analysis of these samples for the second yearly quality evaluation is in progress. We have initiated a study of different means of storage in preventing sample deterioration and in maintaining an inert headspace atmosphere. The work was performed with support from the Penn State Cooperative Program in Coal Research. A run-of-mine sample of medium-volatile bituminous Lower Kittanning coal was collected as PSOC-1536 and promptly processed. Gieseler fluidity FSI, alkali extraction and preparation of petrographic pellets were accomplished within 32 hours of extraction of the coal from the mine face. Splits of the sample were sealed under argon in several container types.

Book excerpt: In the project status report for 4/9/90--7/8/90, Table 2 presented update results of a comparative study of coal sample deterioration in several container types including foil laminate bags. This table contained an erroneous entry (foil laminate bag -20 mesh, alkali extraction 65.4% transmittance). The alkali extraction test on -20 mesh coal stored in foil laminate bags for 52 weeks was repeated in duplicate on another bag (after 64 weeks total storage) resulting in a measurement of 96.2% transmittance. This value has been substituted for the erroneous 65.4% value in the corrected copy of Table 2 enclosed with this report. All values of the alkali extraction and Gieseler fluidity tests indicate that the state of preservation of sample in foil laminate bags is excellent. The samples stored by other methods for comparison purposes all showed significant loss in fluid characteristics. One new whole-seam channel sample of the hvAb Pittsburgh seam coal, DECS-12, was collected July 25, 1990 in Greene County, PA. This sample was placed in 30-gallon steel barrels with high-density lid gaskets and purged with argon at the mine. Upon return to Penn State it was promptly processed so that Gieseler fluidity and other routine analyses could be performed.

Epoxy-binder crushed particle pellets were prepared for reflectance and maceral analyses. Free-swelling index tests were run on both samples and alkali extraction and Gieseler fluidity tests were performed on DECS-2, the bituminous sample. During the current reporting period a total of 51 samples (36 DOE Sample Bank samples and 15 other Penn State samples) of various sizes were distributed. A total of 251 data printouts were distributed. In addition, 17 special data requests were fulfilled by either search/sort and printout or creation of a data. disk, resulting in distribution of limited information on 2,989 samples. Several preliminary requests for Sample Bank and Data Base information and price quotations have also been handled.
