Book excerpt: Using Large Corpora identifies new data-oriented methods for organizing and analyzing large corpora and describes the potential results that the use of large corpora offers. Today, large corpora consisting of hundreds of millions or even billions of words, along with new empirical and statistical methods for organizing and analyzing these data, promise new insights into the use of language. Already, the data extracted from these large corpora reveal that language use is more flexible and complex than most rule-based systems have tried to account for, providing a basis for progress in the performance of Natural Language Processing systems. Using Large Corpora identifies these new data-oriented methods and describes the potential results that the use of large corpora offers. The research described shows that the new methods may offer solutions to key issues of acquisition (automatically identifying and coding information), coverage (accounting for all of the phenomena in a given domain), robustness (accommodating real data that may be corrupt or not accounted for in the model), and extensibility (applying the model and data to a new domain, text, or problem). Based on longitudinal corpora of five children acquiring Modern Greek as their first language, it describes the development of single DPs consisting of definite and indefinite articles, complex DPs that require the use of multiple definite articles — possessive constructions, appositive constructions and Determiner Spreading, a form of adjectival modification — and number and case marking in nouns and definite articles. Detailed quantitative and qualitative analyses show an incremental development of the DP. The findings address the debate concerning maturation versus continuity. Incremental acquisition of the DP argues in favour of a weak continuity approach to language acquisition. Whilst gradual acquisition of the DP remains unexplained within the Principles and Parameters Theory, it is fully compatible within Minimalism, as it is argued to result from the gradual acquisition of the features associated with the Greek DP.

The present study of discourse particles draws upon data from the London-Lund Corpus to show how the methods and tools of corpora can sharpen their description. The first part of the book provides a picture of the state of the art in discourse particle studies and introduces the theory and methodology for the analysis in the second part of the book. Discourse particles are analysed as elements which have been grammaticalised and as a result have certain properties and uses. The importance of linguistic and contextual cues such as text type, position in the discourse, prosody and collocation for analysing discourse particles is illustrated. The following chapters deal with specific discourse particles (now, oh, just, sort of, and that sort of thing, actually) on the basis of their empirical analysis in the London-Lund Corpus. Examples and extended extracts from many different text types are provided to illustrate what discourse particles are doing in discourse.
