Book excerpt: Arguably the most influential figure in human history was Jesus Christ. Wars were fought in his name. In his name many nations rose, and many nations fell. Many prominent leaders gained power from him, and many others were persecuted and killed for their belief in him. It has been said that over 6 billion Bibles have been printed in almost every language, and countless other millions of stories, books, and films have told the story of his life. Yet, he died with two men by his side, and history knows almost nothing about them. Until now. Young Dismas and his brother Jotham are blissfully unaware of the lifelong journey that awaits them soon after their encounter with the young girl, Mary, her husband, Joseph, and their baby, Jesus. Their lives will soon take a very cruel turn that leads through hurt, hardship, betrayal, and murder. Along the way, they make unlikely alliances with Tiran and Gestas, two known criminals with a penchant for theft and murder. It is a path that will ultimately lead them all to intersect with their brutal destinies. Throughout their journey, their lives will intersect with some of the most famous figures of the Bible, and they will learn about love, faith, and the most powerful weapon against sin... forgiveness.

Book Jesus for the Non Religious

Download or read book Jesus for the Non Religious written by John Shelby Spong and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2007-02-27 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing from his prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he called "religionless Christianity." In this book, John Shelby Spong puts flesh onto the bare bones of Bonhoeffer's radical thought. The result is a strikingly new and different portrait of Jesus of Nazareth—a Jesus for the non-religious. Spong challenges much of the traditional understanding that has for so long surrounded the Jesus of history, from the tale of his miraculous birth to a virgin, to the account of his cosmic ascension into the sky at the end of his life. Spong questions the historicity of the ideas that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that he had twelve disciples, and that the miracle stories were meant to be descriptions of supernatural events. He also speaks directly to those contemporary critics of Christianity who call God a "delusion" and who write letters to a "Christian nation" and describe how Christianity has become evil and destructive. Spong invites his readers to look at Jesus through the lens of both the Jewish scriptures and the liturgical life of the first-century synagogue. Dismissing the dispute about Jesus' nature that consumed the church's leadership for the first 500 years of Christian history as irrelevant, Spong proposes a new way of understanding the divinity of Christ: as the ultimate dimension of a fulfilled humanity. Traditional Christians who still cling to dated concepts of the past will not be comfortable with this book; however, skeptics of the twenty-first century will not be quite so certain that dismissing Jesus is the correct pathway to walk. Jesus for the Non-Religious may be the book that finally brings the pious and the secular into a meaningful dialogue, opening the door to a living Christianity in the post-Christian world.

Book excerpt: There may be no more powerful desire in the human heart than to be loved. And not just loved, but loved anyway. In spite of what we've done or left undone, in spite of the ways we have failed or floundered. We long for an unconditional, lavish love that we know intrinsically we don't deserve. If you are tired, sad, yet always longing, bestselling author Jared C. Wilson has incredible news for you: that kind of love actually exists, and it is actually something you can experience--whether or not you're in a romantic relationship. In his signature reflective, conversational, and often humorous style, Wilson unpacks 1 Corinthians 13 to show us what real love looks like. Through engaging stories and touching anecdotes, he paints a picture of an extravagant God who not only puts the desire for love into our very souls but fulfills those desires in striking, life-changing ways.

Book The Thief the Cross and the Wheel

Download or read book The Thief the Cross and the Wheel written by Mitchell B. Merback and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ's Crucifixion is one of the most recognized images in Western visual culture, and it has come to stand as a universal symbol of both suffering and salvation. But often overlooked in this symbolic language is the fact that ultimately the Crucifixion is a scene of capital punishment. In The Thief, the Cross and the Wheel, Mitchell Merback reconstructs the religious, legal, and historical context of the Crucifixion and of other images of public torture. The result is an account of a time when criminal justice and religion were entirely interrelated and punishment was a visual spectacle devoured by a popular audience.

Book excerpt: "The sixteenth-century Catholic Church was definitely in need of reform. Too many of its leaders were worldly and corrupt; too many of the faithful were living in laxity or ignorance. Unfortunately, Protestantism brought revolution rather than reform, but the saints who rose up in response to it helped renew and transform the Church for generations to come. Our own souls, too, are in constant need of reform, of re-conversion to God and his will for us. We struggle with sin, we become distracted in prayer, we find it hard to be loving and easy to be selfish. In Reform Yourself!, Shaun McAfee (founder of Epic Pew and author of Filling Our Father s House) shows you how these magnificent saints can be guides in your own personal transformation. Drawing upon the saints writings, works, and life events, Reform Yourself! reveals in each of them a model of a particular virtue or grace that we all need along with practical tips for imitating them in our own lives"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Hanged in Shame Standing in Glory

Download or read book Hanged in Shame Standing in Glory written by Jeffrey Valerioti and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hanged in Shame, Standing in Glory: Life Lessons from the Thief on the Cross" offers the reader a closer examination of Christ's words to the penitent thief as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The book contains 12 lessons to be applied for personal growth in the lives of both the seeker and the Christian. While the most important lesson learned from the thief on the cross may be that it is never too late to choose Christ, there are numerous life lessons to be unlocked from the brief account of this repentant criminal on the cross next to Jesus. As the reader journeys back to the hill at Calvary, he is invited to interact with Scripture at a deeper level and fix his eyes and his heart upon the brief exchange between two dying men: one serving a sentence as the just punishment for his own sins and the One serving the sentence for the rest of mankind. In just five verses from Luke's Gospel capturing the words spoken between the two near the hour of their deaths, God reveals twelve life-changing lessons that will strengthen the hearts of believers and open the eyes of the unbelievers. As the hymn proclaims, "The Savior is waiting; why don't you let Him come in."
