Download or read book The Penal Crisis and the Clapham Omnibus written by David J. Cornwell and published by Waterside Press. This book was released on 2009-07-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is restorative justice ... and does it work? These are just two of the many questions posed by David J Cornwell in this incisive work. Based on a lifetime of research and experience it deals with the concerns about crime and punishment of that most vivid of judicial creations, The Man or Woman on the Clapham Omnibus. As the author explains, this human reference point for reason and good sense is likely to be far more receptive to sound explanation and argument than the media (and tabloid press in particular) might give credit. And after all, it is his or her taxes which are being routinely wasted on outmoded or discredited methods. Crime will not disappear through the application of heavy-handed sanctions. Indeed, they make matters worse. With prisons overflowing in many western countries, restorative justice offers a better and ultimately more intuitive solution. Cornwell dismantles the traditional arguments for locking people away and undermines the idea that it is necessary to be tough on crime. The book credits people with a higher level of intelligence. It provides them with proper answers and explanations based on sound data, copious research and an in-depth analysis of existing trends. It is a work for people who value credibility rather than politically-driven excuses with their increasingly damaging effects.

Download or read book The Penal Crisis and the Clapham Omnibus written by David J. Cornwell and published by Waterside Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for a wide readership, this book looks at the problems that have led to the penal crisis in the UK. It argues that informed media and public opinion - including much chatter on the Clapham omnibus - has finally 'turned the corner' and that the time is ripe for a concerted pragmatic U-turn in criminal justice policy-making based increasingly on well understood restorative justice principles. The Penal Crisis and the Clapham Omnibus poses questions and tries to give straightforward answers to matters that commonly arise in discussions about restorative justice and argues that the idea of resistance from the public to more enlightened approaches to 'doing justice' is misplaced.
Download or read book Doing Justice Better written by David J. Cornwell and published by Waterside Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an escalating number of criminals going to prison, longer sentences, overcrowded and ineffective regimes, high rates of re-offending and an eclectic penal policy, there is a prison crisis. In this book, the author argues that this penal malaise is grounded in media sensationalism of crime and the need of politicians and their advisers to retain electoral credibility. Change is long overdue, but it requires a fresh, contemporary penology based on restorative justice. This book challenges the status quo, asks 'different questions' and places victims of crime at the centre of the criminal justice process.

Download or read book The Least Worst Place written by Karen Greenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the Washington Post Book World's Best Books of 2009, The Least Worst Place offers a gripping narrative account of the first one hundred days of Guantanamo. Greenberg, one of America's leading experts on the Bush Administration's policies on terrorism, tells the story through a group of career officers who tried--and ultimately failed--to stymie the Pentagon's desire to implement harsh new policies in Guantanamo and bypass the Geneva Conventions. Peopled with genuine heroes and villains, this narrative of the earliest days of the post-9/11 era centers on the conflicts between Gitmo-based Marine officers intent on upholding the Geneva Accords and an intelligence unit set up under the Pentagon's aegis. The latter ultimately won out, replacing transparency with secrecy, military protocol with violations of basic operation procedures, and humane and legal detainee treatment with harsh interrogation methods and torture. Greenberg's riveting account puts a human face on this little-known story, revealing how America first lost its moral bearings in the wake of 9/11.

Download or read book The Use of Force in UN Peace Operations written by Trevor Findlay and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2002 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most vexing issues that has faced the international community since the end of the Cold War has been the use of force by the United Nations peacekeeping forces. UN intervention in civil wars, as in Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Rwanda, has thrown into stark relief the difficulty of peacekeepers operating in situations where consent to their presence and activities is fragile or incomplete and where there is little peace to keep. Complex questions arise in these circumstances. When and how should peacekeepers use force to protect themselves, to protect their mission, or, most troublingly, to ensure compliance by recalcitrant parties with peace accords? Is a peace enforcement role for peacekeepers possible or is this simply war by another name? Is there a grey zone between peacekeeping and peace enforcement? Trevor Findlay reveals the history of the use of force by UN peacekeepers from Sinai in the 1950s to Haiti in the 1990s. He untangles the arguments about the use of force in peace operations and sets these within the broader context of military doctrine and practice. Drawing on these insights the author examines proposals for future conduct of UN operations, including the formulation of UN peacekeeping doctrine and the establishment of a UN rapid reaction force.

Download or read book The 1772 73 British Credit Crisis written by Paul Kosmetatos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays remembered mostly through Adam Smith’s references to the short-lived Ayr Bank in the Wealth of Nations, the 1772-3 financial crisis was an important historical episode in its own right, taking place during a pivotal period in the development of financial capitalism and coinciding with the start of the traditional industrialisation narrative. It was also one of the earliest purely financial crises occurring in peacetime, and its progress showed an impressive geographical reach, involving England, Scotland, the Netherlands and the North American colonies. This book uses a variety of previously unpublished archival sources to question the bubble narrative usually associated with this crisis, and to identify the mechanisms of financial contagion that allowed the failure of a small private bank in London to cause rapid and severe distress throughout the 18th century financial system. It re-examines the short and turbulent career of the Ayr Bank, and concludes that its failure was the result of cavalier liability management akin to that of Northern Rock in 2007, rather than the poor asset quality alleged in existing literature. It furthermore argues that the Bank of England’s prompt efforts to contain the crisis are evidence of a Lender of Last Resort in action, some thirty years before the classical formulation of the concept by Henry Thornton.
