Book The Art and Craft of Literacy Pedagogy

Download or read book The Art and Craft of Literacy Pedagogy written by Jennifer Rowsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tracing community, and how art and craft can be harnessed to express and manifest communities, this book raises fundamental questions and issues about the nature of literacy in everyday lives. Threaded throughout the contributions is an abiding belief in the expansive and flexible nature of literacy, which might one moment involve photography; in the next, drama; and in the next, invite song coupled with movement. Something happens to literacy when it is seen through multiple modalities of meaning and communication: it moves from a thing to a thought and a feeling. Pedagogically, the book offers readers a carousel of places and people to witness literacy with, from young children all the way to grandparents. This opens up a sense of geography and age, proving that literacy really does reside in the centre and corners of our lives. With nine chapters by scholars in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, all researching under the umbrella of the same research study, the collection provides a unique perspective on human and aesthetic communication and shows differences between social groups. This book was originally published as a special issue of Pedagogies: An International Journal.

Book Love in Education the Art of Living

Download or read book Love in Education the Art of Living written by Becky L. Noël Smith and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common for teachers and students of education to feel disheartened about the profession and their own aims and purposes once they become conscious of the dehumanizing tendencies of the schooling institution. As teacher educators, we have also known many students who, after studying critical perspectives aimed at exposing the power and privilege flowing through the public schools, then look to us with the question, “Where’s the hope?” Our attempt to answer our students’ questions has led us to consider what beauty and love in education look like. Where can it be seen, and how can we bring this forward so it can be instructive to those who are faced with similar questions about the incredibly important craft of teaching? This collection of narratives, essays, and poetic expressions includes the perspectives of students and educators who, in varying ways, express gratitude toward those who came before them and a deep desire to keep the faith alive. The authors share narrative accounts of someone or something in the public schools or learning experiences in general that inspired and nurtured the passionate desire to achieve goods internal to some shared practice – that is, some art at living – such that there was a transformative readjustment to the very nature of experience itself. We share with readers the stories and intellectual habits that have fueled us, inspired us, and that continue to push us to engage in the practice of cultivating educational dynamics that are meaningful and transformative for ourselves, our students, and our communities. The book concludes with an exploration into how teachers might not only root their craft, but the habit of love in general, in a sense of freedom.

Book The Craft of University Teaching

Download or read book The Craft of University Teaching written by Peter Lindsay and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does university teaching – as a craft – look like? What changes does a craft perspective suggest for higher education? The Craft of University Teaching addresses these questions in both a general sense – What does the act of teaching become when treated as a craft? What changes to a professor’s educational philosophy does it require? – and with respect to the practical, everyday tasks of university professors, such as the use and misuse of technology, the handling of academic dishonesty, the assignment of course reading, and the instilling of enthusiasm for learning. Intended for professors of all academic disciplines who either enjoy teaching or wish to enjoy it more, The Craft of University Teaching is a provocative and accessible book containing practical advice gleaned from the academic literature on pedagogy. In an era of increased bureaucratic oversight, rapidly diminishing budgets, and waves of technological distraction, The Craft of University Teaching provokes reflection on matters of pedagogy that are too often taken as settled. In so doing, it seeks to reclaim teaching as the intellectually vibrant and intrinsically rewarding endeavor that it is.

Book Art Artists and Pedagogy

Download or read book Art Artists and Pedagogy written by Christopher Naughton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume has been brought together to generate new ideas and provoke discussion about what constitutes arts education in the twenty-first century, both within the institution and beyond. Art, Artists and Pedagogy is intended for educators who teach the arts from early childhood to tertiary level, artists working in the community, or those studying arts in education from undergraduate to Masters or PhD level. From the outset, this book is not only about arts in practice but also about what distinguishes the ‘arts’ in education. Exploring two different philosophies of education, the book asks what the purpose of the arts is in education in the twenty-first century. With specific reference to the work of Gert Biesta, questions are asked as to the relation of the arts to the world and what kind of society we may wish to envisage. The second philosophical set of ideas comes from Deleuze and Guattari, looking in more depth at how we configure art, the artist and the role played by the state and global capital in deciding on what art education has become. This book provides educators with new ways to engage with arts, focusing specifically on art, music, dance, drama and film studies. At a time when many teachers are looking for a means to re-assert the role of the arts in education this text provides many answers with reference to case studies and in-depth arguments from some of the world’s leading academics in the arts, philosophy and education.

Book excerpt: What would you craft to care for yourself or your community? People have been crafting throughout the pandemic and the multiple unfolding catastrophes of our present era. This project investigated emergent strategies for educators to facilitate transformative craft-making experiences that fostered arts-baseds ways to care for ourselves and each other. To help formulate my research questions, I reflected on my own practice as a crafter and began experimenting, turning a critical eye toward why and how I made things. My first investigations involved making a botanical dye with goldenrod, leading to an encounter with local plant ecosystems that revealed emergent themes around crafting and radical care. This helped formulate the following project questions: what are some ways that educators can use critical craft pedagogy to foster self and community care? What are the actual outcomes of educational experiences designed to do so? Using an emergent research methodology, I developed a small-scale, action research study to help answer those questions while continuing a critical, autoethnographic investigation of my own craft practice, collecting documentation through photographs, written observations, and reflections. These reflections informed three workshops that employed an arts-based interview question: craft something to care for yourself or your community. In addition to interview responses, I collected photo and written documentation of conversations and key moments from the workshops themselves. The first workshop was held with one of my own classroom communities of eleven fellow art students as part of the class History as Material at SAIC. Next, I facilitated a workshop with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation’s Teen Arts Council, a youth leadership program, with a group of six juniors and seniors with diverse backgrounds from neighboring St. Louis High Schools. The third workshop was a public, online meet-up attended by friends and new faces, mostly urban young adults, from online crafting spaces. Participants’ responses to the workshop prompts were varied and rooted in the community care needs of each site; themes emerged around crafting safe spaces, objects of institutional resistance, and building sustainable connections. This small-scale investigation revealed insights and considerations for facilitating transformative craft-making experiences within my practice in addition to generating curricular models of transformative craft projects for crafters, educators, and those in between. Participant responses, along with the story, insights, documentation, and curriculum recommendations from this project are assembled in the form of a craft magazine to engage readers in transformative craft experiences of their own design.
