Download or read book Supernova Explosions written by David Branch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targeting advanced students of astronomy and physics, as well as astronomers and physicists contemplating research on supernovae or related fields, David Branch and J. Craig Wheeler offer a modern account of the nature, causes and consequences of supernovae, as well as of issues that remain to be resolved. Owing especially to (1) the appearance of supernova 1987A in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud, (2) the spectacularly successful use of supernovae as distance indicators for cosmology, (3) the association of some supernovae with the enigmatic cosmic gamma-ray bursts, and (4) the discovery of a class of superluminous supernovae, the pace of supernova research has been increasing sharply. This monograph serves as a broad survey of modern supernova research and a guide to the current literature. The book’s emphasis is on the explosive phases of supernovae. Part 1 is devoted to a survey of the kinds of observations that inform us about supernovae, some basic interpretations of such data, and an overview of the evolution of stars that brings them to an explosive endpoint. Part 2 goes into more detail on core-collapse and superluminous events: which kinds of stars produce them, and how do they do it? Part 3 is concerned with the stellar progenitors and explosion mechanisms of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae. Part 4 is about consequences of supernovae and some applications to astrophysics and cosmology. References are provided in sufficient number to help the reader enter the literature.

Book Extreme Explosions

    Book Details:
  • Author : David S. Stevenson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-09-05
  • ISBN : 1461481368
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Extreme Explosions written by David S. Stevenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens at the end of the life of massive stars? At one time we thought all these stars followed similar evolutionary paths. However, new discoveries have shown that things are not quite that simple. This book focuses on the extreme –the most intense, brilliant and peculiar– of astronomical explosions. It features highly significant observational finds that push the frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics, particularly as before these objects were only predicted in theory. This book is for those who want the latest information and ideas about the most dramatic and unusual explosions detected by current supernova searches. It examines and explains cataclysmic and unusual events in stellar astrophysics and presents them in a non-mathematical but highly detailed way that non-professionals can understand and enjoy.

Book Astronomy in India A Historical Perspective

Download or read book Astronomy in India A Historical Perspective written by Thanu Padmanabhan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a strong and ancient tradition of astronomy, which seamlessly merges with the current activities in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the country. While the younger generation of astronomers and students are reasonably familiar with the current facilities and the astronomical research, they might not have an equally good knowledge of the rich history of Indian astronomy. This particular volume, brought out as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Indian National Science Academy, concentrates on selected aspects of historical development of Indian astronomy in the form of six invited chapters. Two of the chapters – by Balachandra Rao and M.S. Sriram – cover ancient astronomy and the development of calculus in the ancient Kerela text Yuktibhasa. The other four chapters by B.V. Sreekantan, Siraj Hasan, Govind Swarup and Jayant Narlikar deal with the contemporary history of Indian astronomy covering space astronomy, optical astronomy, radio astronomy and developments in relativistic astrophysics. These chapters, written by experts in the field, provide an in-depth study of the subject and make this volume quite unique.

Book The Multicolored Landscape of Compact Objects and Their Explosive Origins

Download or read book The Multicolored Landscape of Compact Objects and Their Explosive Origins written by Lucio A. Antonelli and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes feature the proceedings from a conference held in Cefalù, Italy, in June 2006. The first volume starts with a discussion of gamma ray bursts, then examines magnetar candidates, and finally explores the properties of supernovae. The second volume discusses the properties of pulsars and millisecond pulsars and then covers the properties of interacting binaries containing white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black hole candidates.

Book excerpt: Stars are the main factories of element production in the universe through a suite of complex and intertwined physical processes. Such stellar alchemy is driven by multiple nuclear interactions that through eons have transformed the pristine, metal-poor ashes leftover by the Big Bang into a cosmos with 100 distinct chemical species. The products of

Book Stellar Candles for the Extragalactic Distance Scale

Download or read book Stellar Candles for the Extragalactic Distance Scale written by Danielle Alloin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-05 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews the current status with respect to both theory and observation of the extragalactic distance scale. A sufficient accuracy is required both for a precise determination of the cosmological parameters and also in order to achieve a better understanding of physical processes in extragalactic systems. The "standard candles", used to set up the extragalactic distance scale, reviewed in this book include cepheid variables, RR Lyrae variables, novae, Type Ia and Type II supernovae as well as globular clusters and planetary nebulae.
