Book El Salvador a Peace Corps Publication

Download or read book El Salvador a Peace Corps Publication written by Peace Peace Corps and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peace Corps was invited to El Salvador and sent its first Volunteers in 1962. During the next 15 years, more than 1,500 Volunteers worked in 15- 20 sectors, serving primarily as project partners to government agencies and offices. In 1980, increasing violence prior to the civil war led the Peace Corps to close its offices. The destruction of economic and social infrastructure during the war sent El Salvador back to 1950s levels in most economic and social indicators. A 1986 earthquake destroyed much of what the war did not, especially in San Salvador. Moreover, widespread migration led to the breakdown of many social and family institutions and particularly affected youth and the environment. The government of El Salvador invited the Peace Corps to return to El Salvador in 1993. The first Volunteers arrived later that year. They were asked to increase the capacity of local people in several priority areas identified by the government and later affirmed by civil society in the Plan de Nacion, or National Plan, presented in 2000. The National Plan is a blueprint for national development, and Peace Corps programming is consistent with its priorities. The role of Peace Corps Volunteers remains to build capacity for local people and institutions.

Book excerpt: H. Lynn Beck had no clue what to do after two years of agricultural study at the university. He felt he was not learning anything and he was bored with the time he spent on his family's Nebraska crop farm. On a whim, he joined the Peace Corps-that was a decision that would affect the rest of his life. He was sent to Puerto Rico for training. After three weeks of Spanish training he was sent to rural Puerto Rico alone for survival training. The training was intense: from 7:00 a.m. to 10 p.m., six days a week.

Book excerpt: This book documents the transition of a 20-year-old farm boy who had never been far from home to a world traveler who was comfortable in any situation in Latin America. It follows him through training in Puerto Rico, where he had difficulty leaning to speak Spanish. He learned enough Spanish to be sworn in as a Peace Corps Volunteer and an airline ticket to El Salvador. After a brief orientation in San Salvador, he was sent to Sonsonate where he was assigned to teach literacy to Indian small farmers. After a few months, he transferred to the Agriculture Extension Service where I teamed with a home economist named America and an agronomist named Vicente. They worked in many Indian villages teaching small farmers how to better farm and house wife better cooking and health practices. Occasionally, he was able to take vacations where he hitchhiked along the Pan American highway to visit all the Central American countries. This involved hitchhiking through the Guatemalan jungle to visit the pyramids in the Peten jungle. All the time his Spanish improved until towards the end of his tour, he was fluent in speaking Spanish.

Book The Peace Corps and Latin America

Download or read book The Peace Corps and Latin America written by Thomas J. Nisley and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost 60 years, the United States government has sent more than 230,000 of its citizens abroad to serve as Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) for two-year tours, often in very poor countries. As these Volunteers work in grassroots development, helping to build local capacity, they also serve as citizen diplomats and contribute to U.S. public diplomacy. The unique experience of the Peace Corps provides the Volunteers knowledge and a profound understanding of another country or region of the world. Volunteers continue to serve their country as they bring their experience and knowledge back to the United States. Many of them go on to serve in the State Department and in the United States Agency for International Development. Some have even risen to the top ranks of the Foreign Service. Thomas Nisley argues that the Peace Corps is an important tool of U.S. foreign policy that contributes on multiple levels. As these citizen diplomats do their work, they help to improve the popular image of the United States, contributing to U.S. “soft power.” Soft power is a co-optive power, getting others to want what you want. After a general exploration of how the Peace Corps contributes to U.S. foreign policy, the book takes a direct focus on Latin America. Dr. Nisley provides evidence, along with a theoretical explanation, that PCVs do indeed improve the popular perception of the United States in Latin America. He then examines three different periods in U.S foreign policy toward Latin America and shows how the Peace Corps made its contribution. Not all U.S. policy makers have equally recognized the role of the Peace Corps in U.S. foreign policy. Some have even dismissed it outright. This book argues that the Peace Corps plays an important role in U.S. foreign policy. Although the Peace Corps is much stronger today than it was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, U.S. foreign policy would be well served if the Peace Corps were further strengthen and expanded, not only in Latin America but in the world. We should considered the wider policy benefits of the Peace Corps.
