Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilian, Vol. 7: A Fortnightly Journal Devoted to the Interests of the Civil Service of Canada; December 11, 1914 The patriotism and self-denial of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police is excelled by none. Most of the men have asked to be allowed to go to the front, but their offer has been refused because their services are required in keeping order amongst the aliens of every nationality scattered throughout the district which is policed by the famed mounted men. Refused permission to go to the front, they have expressed their senti ments by contributing one day's pay per month to the Canadian Patriotic Fund. Yet the salary of the ordinary constable is only $1 per day. In other words these men are con tributing nearly a fortnight's pay in the year. The contribution means about per month, or nearly per year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Patriot War Classic Reprint written by Robert Budd Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot War In 1763 when Gen. Gage, the British commander, drafted a contin gent of French Canadians to aid in revenging on the Indians the massa cre of the garrison at Mackinaw, the levies were treated as beasts of burden, and set to work at the point of the bayonet, while the British regulars sat at ease in their tents. The legislative council or senate excluded all natives of Canada from a share in the conduct of its affairs. N 0 correct idea can be given within the narrow limits of a newspaper history of the vexatious injustice practiced upon the French population. They were at one time denied the right of sitting as jurors, and were in many respects a proscribed class. Small wonder that many French Canadians joined the ranks of the heroes of the American revolution in 1776.
