Book Private Practices

Download or read book Private Practices written by Naoko Wake and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Practices examines the relationship between science, sexuality, gender, race, and culture in the making of modern America between 1920 and 1950, when contradictions among liberal intellectuals affected the rise of U.S. conservatism. Naoko Wake focuses on neo-Freudian, gay psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan, founder of the interpersonal theory of mental illness. She explores medical and social scientists' conflicted approach to homosexuality, particularly the views of scientists who themselves lived closeted lives. Wake discovers that there was a gap--often dramatic, frequently subtle--between these scientists' "public" understanding of homosexuality (as a "disease") and their personal, private perception (which questioned such a stigmatizing view). This breach revealed a modern culture in which self-awareness and open-mindedness became traits of "mature" gender and sexual identities. Scientists considered individuals of society lacking these traits to be "immature," creating an unequal relationship between practitioners and their subjects. In assessing how these dynamics--the disparity between public and private views of homosexuality and the uneven relationship between scientists and their subjects--worked to shape each other, Private Practices highlights the limits of the scientific approach to subjectivity and illuminates its strange career--sexual subjectivity in particular--in modern U.S. culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private mental health practice is a vibrant, thriving, and financially rewarding profession. And yet many who consider pursuing this path are misled by falsehoods, or myths, about private practice that can result in costly mistakes - or avoidance of this fulfilling and worthwhile career path. There is no need to market my practice, clients will find me. I learned everything I need to know about private practice in graduate school. I don't need an attorney or a CPA. Self-care is for students. But there is, you didn't, you do, and no, it most certainly is not. In If You Build It They Will Come, Jeffrey Barnett and Jeffrey Zimmerman dismantle many common misconceptions (myths) relating to the preparation, management, and ethics of entering and running a successful private practice in the mental health professions. Grouped into thematic sections, misconceptions are addressed briefly and succinctly. In addition to sharing accurate information to refute each myth, the book provides vital information on how to be successful in private practice. The authors identify common pitfalls and challenges, offering specific and practical strategies to address and move beyond the myth. Each chapter concludes with recommended resources and readings. Blending decades of clinical experience with practical no-nonsense advice about running a practice, If You Build It They Will Come helps fill the gaps in practice development training. Book The Private Practice Field Guide

Download or read book The Private Practice Field Guide written by Daniel Franz and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I started thinking about making the leap from working for someone else to owning my own mental health private practice several years ago, I was terrified. I was worried I would never make enough money, afraid to give up the "security" of a "stable" income, and anxious at the thought of having to find my own clients and convince them that I was the therapist for them.I needed a guide - a nuts and bolts "How To" manual to give me the step-by-step path from where I was to where I wanted to be. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one. Don't get me wrong, I found tons of information, and a few really great books that told me I could do, that they had faith in me, and to think positive. But I needed more.I wasn't able to find everything I needed to get started in one convenient, handy-dandy location, so I struggled to pick it up along the way. I made plenty of mistakes, some fairly expensive, some pretty embarrassing. That's why I wrote this book. To help you avoid all that and to have an easier time along your journey from where you are to where you want to be.Are you ready to leave your current position as employee-therapist and start your own practice?Have you been thinking about leaving the "safety" and "security" of corporate community mental health to strike out on your own, but can't get past the fear, anxiety, and stress of making the move?Do you want to take the practice you currently have and increase your caseload through more effective marketing? Is it time to take a good honest look at our business practices and streamline them in order to give yourself more time and income? If you answered "YES!" to any of these questions, I wrote this book for you.

But no modern translation has yet captured the essential thrust of Lao Tzu's work as a practical guide to living an awakened life. Now William Martin, whose acclaimed previous reinterpretations of the Tao (for parents, couples, and elders) have introduced or reacquainted this classic text to thousands of readers, strikingly translates the Tao's eighty-one chapters to uniquely address someone on a Tao—or path—with a practice. Martin frames his new translation with two illuminating, groundbreaking sections: "A Path," which introduces the Tao's nonlinear construction and explains how it works its themes; and "A Practice," which provides practical guidance for readers exploring each of the Tao's themes in depth. Martin's genius in this new translation uncovers how directly the Tao speaks to readers on or about to embark on a spiritual journey.
