Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is wealthy beneath the soil. Gold, diamonds, and other precious natural resources have, from ancient times, pulled people from all over the world to Africa, and yet the masses whose feet tread on such riches are being led on unknown paths with virtually nothing to show to the world but poverty. The worsening situation regarding poverty, unemployment, hunger, violence, illiteracy, disease, environmental degradation, etc. pose a security threat not only for the people of Africa but the entire world. Using Ghana—the first black African country led by Kwame Nkrumah to gain independence from colonial rule—as a case, Paths to Nowhere takes a look at the twist and turns of African countries in pursuit of the African dream. The books examine the obstacles in the path of independent African states from political freedom toward the ever-eluding economic freedom. Paths to Nowhere highlights the actions, inactions, systems, controls, powers, traditions, beliefs, assumptions, neglect, carelessness, and mistakes that have gradually eroded the confidence and expectations of the African and what it takes to reverse the order. The author draws from his political and administrative experience and practical knowledge of the sociopolitical terrain across the sub-Saharan Africa region to bring to the fore the overarching issues that are keeping the masses in Africa poor despite the rich resource base of the continent.

Book Freedom Entitlement and the Path to Development

Download or read book Freedom Entitlement and the Path to Development written by Jean-Pierre Chauffour and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years after the revolutions of Central and Eastern Europe, the Arab Spring is again raising some fundamental questions about the place of freedom and entitlement in development. Depending on the balance between free choices and more coerced decisions, individual opportunities to learn, own, work, save, invest, trade, protect, and so forth could vary greatly across countries and over time. Reviewing the economic performance of more than 100 countries over the past 30 years, new empirical evidence tends to support the idea that economic freedom and civil and political liberties are the root causes of why certain countries achieve and sustain better economic outcomes. In contrast, entitlement rights do not seem to have any significant effects on long-term per capita income, except for a possible negative effect. These results tend to support earlier findings that, beyond core functions of government responsibility (including the protection of liberty itself), the expansion of the state to provide for various entitlements (including so-called economic, social, and cultural rights) may not make people richer in the long run; it may even make them poorer.

Book Development as Freedom

Download or read book Development as Freedom written by Amartya Sen and published by Alfred A. Knopf. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development as Freedom is a general exposition of the economic ideas and analyses of Amartya Sen, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. This brilliant and indispensable treatise compellingly analyzes the nature of contemporary economic development from the perspective of human freedom. Freedom, Sen persuasively argues, is at once the ultimate goal of economic life and the most efficient means of realizing general welfare. It is a good to be enjoyed by the world's entire population. Drawing on moral and political philosophy and technical economic analysis, this work gives the nonspecialist reader powerful access to Sen's paradigm-altering vision and vividly shows how he, in the words of the Nobel Prize committee, has both "restored an ethical dimension to the discussion of economic problems" and "opened up new fields of study for subsequent generations of researchers." To a world divided between those who fear the ruthlessness of the free market under prevailing conditions of global capitalism and those who fear the terror of authoritarian states that stifle indi- vidual liberty as well as initiative, Development as Freedom presents a necessary intellectual and moral framework of analysis and scrutiny. By rigorously addressing one of the largest questions of all--"What is the relation between our economic wealth and our ability to live as we would like?"--Sen allows economics once again, as it did in the time of Adam Smith, to address the social basis of individual well-being and freedom. He also confronts the human dilemma that "despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps eventhe majority--of people." This is a landmark work that shows how in individual human freedom--the exclusive possession, Sen shows, of no particular nation, region or historical, intellectual or religious tradition--lies the capacity for political participation, economic development and social progress.

Book Economic Liberties and Human Rights

Download or read book Economic Liberties and Human Rights written by Jahel Queralt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of economic liberties remains a serious lacuna in the theory and practice of human rights. Should a minimally just society protect the freedoms to sell, save, profit and invest? Is being prohibited to run a business a human rights violation? While these liberties enjoy virtually no support from the existing philosophical theories of human rights and little protection by the international human rights law, they are of tremendous importance in the lives of individuals, and particularly the poor. Like most individual liberties, economic liberties increase our ability to lead our own life. When we enjoy them, we can choose the occupational paths that best fit us and, in so doing, define who they are in relation to others. Furthermore, in the absence of good jobs, economic liberties allow us to create an alternative path to subsistence. This is critical for the millions of working poor in developing countries who earn their livelihoods by engaging in independent economic activities. Insecure economic liberties leave them vulnerable to harassment, bribery and other forms of abuse from middlemen and public officials. This book opens a debate about the moral and legal status of economic liberties as human rights. It brings together political and legal theorists working in the domain of human rights and global justice, as well as people engaged in the practice of human rights, to engage in both foundational and applied issues concerning these questions.
