His dwelling on the banks of the Saranac is described as having been sumptuously furnished, and the seat of refinement and taste. Here, surrounded by the families of his workmen, who dwelt in rude cabins near the lake or at the Falls, he lived with his wife and children in almost unbroken solitude, looking forward to the day when his broad acres would be cleared and his possessions on the Saranac should produce baronial wealth. Download or read book Plattsburgh written by Kelly M. Julian and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plattsburgh was founded in 1784 by Zephaniah Platt, a native of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County. This city on the shores of Lake Champlain has been of military and commercial importance for more than 200 years. Plattsburgh's waterways provided access to the St. Lawrence Seaway and Canada to the north and the Hudson Valley to the south. This location served to make the American victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814 critical to the young nation's independence and allowed commerce to flourish during the 19th century. In addition to a military history that spans from the Revolutionary War to the Cold War, Plattsburgh has a cultural history that includes serving as Pres. William McKinley's summer White House and hosting the Catholic Summer School of America. Notables and philanthropists, such as William H. Miner and Smith M. Weed, further developed Plattsburgh by promoting the railroad and mining industries and working toward the creation of Physician's Hospital and Plattsburgh Normal School.

Book Geeky Pedagogy

Download or read book Geeky Pedagogy written by Jessamyn Neuhaus and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geeky Pedagogy is a funny, evidence-based, multidisciplinary, pragmatic, highly readable guide to the process of learning and relearning how to be an effective college teacher. It is the first college teaching guide that encourages faculty to embrace their inner nerd, inviting readers to view themselves and their teaching work in light of contemporary discourse that celebrates increasingly diverse geek culture and explores stereotypes about super-smart introverts. Geeky Pedagogy avoids the excessive jargon, humorlessness, and endless proscriptions that plague much published advice about teaching. Neuhaus is aware of how embodied identity and employment status shape one's teaching context, and she eschews formulaic depictions of idealized exemplar teaching, instead inviting readers to join her in an engaging, critically reflective conversation about the vicissitudes of teaching and learning in higher education as a geek, introvert, or nerd. Written for the wonks and eggheads who want to translate their vast scholarly expertise into authentic student learning, Geeky Pedagogy is packed with practical advice and encouragement for increasing readers' pedagogical knowledge.

This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Canadian's View of the Battle of Plattsburgh I do not pretend to give the Canadian View of the battle. I fancy the views taken by Canadians of this battle are as varied as those taken by Americans or Englishmen; and I do no more than give you the view of one Canadian, proud of the name. It is a remarkable circumstance that from the very beginning of the war the American Government was sincerely desirous of peace. A great wrong was done to President Madison by a whole political party in charg ing him with a desire for war in order to better his political fortunes; but this charge still makes itself heard from time to time. It is most true that from the South and West came an insistent cry for war, which it was found impossible to resist; and from the same quarters the cry continued, during the whole period of the war, for its continuance.
