Augustine Upon These Saints I record my debt to the books of many writers - above all those of Allard, Leclercq and Robinson - on whose wide erudition my work so often depends to Lady Helen Asquith, who read through my book in proof; and to Mr. Stanley Morison, who permits my translation to be reprinted and to whom I owe the first impulse to a study which has been of great interest to myself and may perhaps be of use to others. • Author : Isabel Moreira
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Heaven s Purge written by Isabel Moreira and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of purgatory - the state after death in which Christians undergo punishment by God for unforgiven sins - raises many questions. What is purgatory like? Who experiences it? Does purgatory purify souls, or punish them, or both? How painful is it? Heaven's Purge explores the first posing of these questions in Christianity's early history, from the first century to the eighth: an era in which the notion that sinful Christians might improve their lot after death was contentious, or even heretical. Isabel Moreira discusses a wide range of influences at play in purgatory's early formation, including ideas about punishment and correction in the Roman world, slavery, the value of medical purges at the shrines of saints, and the authority of visions of the afterlife for informing Christians of the hereafter. She also challenges the deeply ingrained supposition that belief in purgatory was a symptom of barbarized Christianity, and assesses the extent to which Irish and Germanic views of society, and the sources associated with them - penitentials and legal tariffs - played a role in purgatory's formation. Special attention is given to the writings of the last patristic author of antiquity, the Northumbrian monk Bede. Heaven's Purge is the first study to focus on purgatory's history in late antiquity, challenging the conclusions of recent scholarship through an examination of the texts, communities and cultural ideas that informed purgatory's early history.

Book Ancient Rome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Monica M. Bontty
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2020-03-17
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Ancient Rome written by Monica M. Bontty and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shares little-known facts from and excerpts of primary source documents to correct popular misconceptions about Ancient Rome and to show how those misconceptions became widespread. Roman personalities and history have always had a larger-than-life profile in American popular culture, but most people think of this ancient civilization as merely decadent, cruel, and elitist. Most of our stereotypical conceptions of the empire and its people, however, are wrong. This book corrects popular misconceptions about the ancient Roman world, thus making ancient history relevant and accessible to modern readers and allowing modern critics of American politics and society to draw accurate comparisons. Each chapter discusses how a particular misconception developed, spread, and evolved into what we now believe to be the historical truth. Topics discussed include crucifixion, the destruction of Carthage, Julius Caesar's last words, and Roman hygiene. Excerpts from primary source documents provide evidence of both the rise of the historical fictions and the truths behind the myths.

Book Gender and African Indigenous Religions

Download or read book Gender and African Indigenous Religions written by Musa W. Dube and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the work of contemporary African women researchers, this volume explores feminist perspectives in relation to African Indigenous Religions (AIR). It evaluates what the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians’ research has achieved and proposed since its launch in 1989, their contribution to the world of knowledge and liberation, and the potential application to nurturing a justice-oriented world. The book considers the methodologies used amongst the Circle to study African Indigenous Religions, the AIR sources of knowledge that are drawn on, and the way in which women are characterized. It reflects on how ideas drawn from African Indigenous Religions might address issues of patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism, racism, tribalism, and sexual and disability-based discrimination. The chapters examine theologies of specific figures. The book will be of interest to scholars of religion, gender studies, Indigenous studies, and African studies.
