Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Storm, and Other Poems Oh that my words were now written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! - Job xix, 23. Books have, from time immemorial, been the conservators of human wisdom, the repositories of information, the mentors of youth and adolescence, the counsellors of manhood, the comfort and companionship of age. The experience of an individual, school or era, when committed to book form, becomes the common property of all succeeding time, and the accumulated knowledge of the past, transmitted from generation to generation, through the medium of books, may with justice be regarded as the most valuable of human heritages. But they have not always been unmixed blessings; they have both led and misled; they have elucidated, yet have mystified. They have dissipated the shadows of ignorance and superstition, but in some instances have confused and obscured the searchlight of truth. In the economy of human affairs, books have been factors of no small importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1907, Alfred Castner King's unique and beautiful The Passing of the Storm survives as his most enduring work. A rare example of epic verse, it sends its readers deep into the heart of the ruggedly wild world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, blending together the pivotal events of that tumultuous era with an ageless tale of brotherly courage and love. Even before his accidental blinding midway through life, it was King's passion to forever memorialize the natural splendor and simple majesty of the American frontier and its humble working class. But it was his continual struggle to come to terms with his late tragedy that gives much of his collected Other Poems their unique and intensely captivating voice. The Passing of the Storm and Other Poems takes readers on a journey through the mind of King as he explores his mournful love of nature and a world now gone, bringing them back to life as he could only do through words. "Alfred Castner King had been a lover of nature, a man of the mountains and forests who had embraced the beauty of the natural world with his heart and soul. His poems were written after an accident left him blind. I have read his poems over the years and, at times, have been overwhelmed by the beauty of his words. King's poetry possesses a spirit that reaches through time and beyond the darkness that shrouded the man."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Snowflake and Other Poems And I would sigh in the depths of sky And die in distant lands. But who can prove to the plea of love, Unyielding and unkind 7' At love's low call we hasten all, Like leaves at the voice of wind. And ere the moon at the night's high noon Had twelve times orbed grown, My heart was stirred at a whispered word, My soul was not mine own. My lover was fair as the balmy air That follows after storm, When the careless sea, with a song of glee, Trips over the shallows warm. He was the first through the gloom that burst To bring the dawn to me, And he was the last from my sight that passed When darkness walked the sea. One shimmering day, as asleep I lay Upon the tide-worn sand, He stole apart, with an eager heart, From all the sunny band. He came to me, as I lay thought free, And bent my couch above, And while I slumbered, with words unnumbered, He pleaded for my love; Then as I woke at the words he spoke, And rising turned to flee, I was closely pressed to his ardent breast, And kisses were rained on me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Snow Storm Lastly - though not least - That I may express some sentiments in rela tion to a subject of deep import to the rising generation, if not to that which is now upon the stage of action, and give them a more per manent position than through the ordinary channels of the Press. Almost every man and woman has a vivid recollection of the terrors of school. Days; of the acts of injustice, tyranny and cruelty inflicted by their teachers. I certainly have. Very deficient from birth in number, acquisitiveness and secretive ness, (so styled by the phrenologists, ) in my childish days arithmetic was so profound a mystery that I could scarcely comprehend that two and two make four yet I was required to perform the same sums as those who, from their different mental conformation, delighted in figures. It being impossible to comply, I was cut and threshed with hickory or other rods, until my flesh would not only be much bruised but also raw. At last, to obviate such suffering, I yielded to the teachings of those boys who compassionated me, and commenced a game of deceit by hiring and begging the doing of my sums by those who were competent. If un fortunately they committed an error, I paid the penalty by receiving a good threshing. Thus the brute of a teacher forced me to learn. And practice fraud and deception, against which my small secretiveness andlarge conscientiousness constantly rebelled. In reading and spelling I always led my class. Yet for my natural deficiency in figures I was cruelly, almost murderously, treated, to make the idle little rascal cypher. Witnessing that others who cyphered well were always being threshed for deficiencies in reading, spelling, etc., so indelible an impression was made upon my mind of some great wrong somewhere, that on arriving at manhood I determined that no child of mine should ever enter school if such ignoramuses were teachers and such systems pursued.
