Nothing like it, either for the dramatic interest of its development, or for the effect it promises to exercise on the fortunes of political parties in the United Kingdom, has occurred within the memory of the present generation. It is believed, therefore, that a permanent record of these events will be acceptable, not only to students of history and politics, but to all who take an interest in public affairs, whether at home or abroad. Accordingly, it has been determined to republish in the present volume the letters, manifestoes, and other documents issued by the several parties to the conflict, together with the reports of the meet ings of the Irish Parliamentary party during the crisis. Some por tions of the Interview with Mr. Davitt of November 26, and also one or two passages of the debates in No. 15 Committee Room, have been omitted, as they appeared to be devoid of permanent interest, and some trifling alterations of a verbal nature have been made in orderte preserve the continuity of the narrative. With these exceptions the whole of the present volume has been re printed from the reports which appeared from day to day in the columns of The Times. Book excerpt: "This book tells the story of the Parnell split in Westmeath and argues that it was part of a wider revolt by a section of the Catholic middle class against the dominant role of the Church in the politics of the county. The dispute in Westmeath was characterized by the enmity between the local Catholic bishop Dr. Thomas Nulty, a passionate anti-Parnellite, and Parnellite newspaper editor John P. Hayden. Hayden was representative of the emergent Catholic middle class and a thorn in the side of Nulty long before Parnell's divorce became an issue in Irish politics. When the Parnell crisis broke the two were pitted against each other once again. In the ensuing struggle, Hayden used his newspaper, the Westmeath Examiner, not just to support the Parnellite cause but also to roundly condemn his clerical opponents, prompting the bishop to ban the faithful from reading the paper. Although the bishop and his clergy emerged as the clear winners in the Parnell dispute, Hayden was far from vanquished. Following the death of Nulty in 1898, he went on to play a prominent role in the constitutional nationalist movement, both in Westmeath and in his native Roscommon."--Provided by publisher.

This study examines the four Anglo-Irish historical figures who dominated his life and art: Oscar Wilde, Charles Stewart Parnell, Jonathan Swift, and Roger Casement. All were creators—whether they conceived their life artistically, conceived an intellectual vision of Ireland free, or made lasting art. Their powers were matched by the magnitude of their defeat, for all, except Swift, were violently crucified by the mob for their irregular private lives. In defeat, however, they revealed transcendent heroism, as they faced their enemies with aristocratic disdain and unfailing bravery. Their constantly recreated heroic images inspired and haunted Yeats in art and politics, showed him ways to remake himself and to reconcile his devotion to art with his duty to Ireland. Yeats's Heroic Figures traces the intersections of the vivid figures in the "human drama" Yeats saw as history from 1883 to 1938, and considers their shaping forces upon Yeats's art, philosophy, and life. The 1790s saw the birth of modern Irish republicanism and Orangeism, whose antagonism remains a defining feature of Irish political life. The 1790s also saw the birth of a new approach to Ireland within important elements of the British political elite, men like Pitt and Castlereagh. Strongly influenced by Edmund Burke, they argued that Britain's strategic interests were best served by a policy of catholic emancipation and political integration in Ireland. Britain's failure to achieve this objective, dramatised by the horrifying tragedy of the Irish famine of 1846-50, in which a million Irish died, set the context for the emergence of a popular mass nationalism, expressed in the Fenian, Parnell, and Sinn Fein movements, which eventually expelled Britain from the greater part of the island. This book reassesses all the key leaders of Irish nationalism - Tone, O'Connell, Butt, Parnell, Collins, and de Valera - alongside key British political leaders such as Peel and Gladstone in the nineteenth century, or Winston Churchill and Tony Blair in the twentieth century. A study of the changing ideological passions of the modern Irish question, this analysis is, however, firmly placed in the context of changing social and economic realities. Using a vast range of original sources, Paul Bew holds together the worlds of political class in London, Dublin, and Belfast in one coherent analysis which takes the reader all the way from the society of the United Irishman to the crisis of the Good Friday Agreement.
