Book Parliamentary Constituencies and Their Registers Since 1832

Download or read book Parliamentary Constituencies and Their Registers Since 1832 written by Richard H. A. Cheffins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication lists every parliamentary constituency from the Great Reform Actwhen registration began to those established by the latest redistribution of seats. Constituencies are listed in a single alphabetical sequence together with variant names. The listing gives the period of each constituency's existence, the registers held by the British Library, the shelfmarks for these registers, and notes and cross-references. Appendices list pre-1832 constituencies, the British Library's holdings of Irish, Manx, and Channel Island registers, university electoral registers, poll books, and non-parliamentary registers such as burgess rolls, ward lists, parochial and county council registers, ratepayers' lists and business premises registers, valuation rolls, and jurors' lists. The publication contains an introduction with the history and background to the franchise, registration, and the redistribution of seats and it is completed with a bibliography of reference works on this topic. This guide was compiled to satisfy a long-felt need for a comprehensive finding list of the British Library's holdings of such material but now satisfies a much wider need. Libraries and record offices should find it a useful reference work, and researchers in the area of local history and genealogy, and the libraries and societies that support such research should find it an invaluable sourcebook.

  • Author : Jon Lawrence
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-05-09
  • ISBN : 9780521893664
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Speaking for the People written by Jon Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking for the People, first published in 1998, draws our attention to the problematic nature of politicians' claims to represent others, and in doing so it challenges conventional ideas about both the rise of class politics, and the triumph of party between 1867 and 1914. The book emphasises the strongly gendered nature of party politics before the First World War, and suggests that historians have greatly underestimated the continuing importance of the 'politics of place'. Most importantly, however, Speaking for the People argues that we must break away from teleological notions such as the 'modernisation' of politics, the taming of the 'popular', or the rise of class. Only then will we understand the shifting currents of popular politics. Speaking for the People represents a major challenge to the ways in which historians and political scientists have studied the interaction between party politics and popular political cultures.

Book Incognito Social Investigation in British Literature

Download or read book Incognito Social Investigation in British Literature written by Luke Seaber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full critical history of incognito social investigation texts – in other words, works detailing their authors’ experiences whilst pretending to be poor. The most famous example is Down and Out in Paris and London, but there has been a vast array of other works in the genre since it was created in 1866 by James Greenwood’s ‘A Night in a Workhouse’. It draws up a classification of incognito social investigation texts, dividing them into four subtypes. The first comprises those texts following most narrowly in James Greenwood’s footsteps, taking the extreme poor as their object of study. The next is the investigation of poverty through walking, for pedestrianism and poverty are fascinatingly linked. The third is that of people looking at relative poverty rather than absolute, where authors take on badly-paid work in order to report on it, which is when incognito social investigation becomes very much something carried out by women. We end looking at those incognito social investigators who settled in the areas they explored. Not only will this book recover the history of a genre that has long been ignored, however, but it will also offer significant close reading of many of the texts that it places within the tradition(s) it discovers.

Book Politics in the Republic of Ireland

Download or read book Politics in the Republic of Ireland written by John Coakley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics in the Republic of Ireland is now available in a fully revised fourth edition. Building on the success of the previous three editions, this text continues to provide an authoritative introduction to all aspects of politics in the Republic of Ireland. Written by some of the foremost experts on Irish politics, it explains, analyzes and interprets the background to Irish government and contemporary political processes. Crucially, it brings the student up-to-date with the very latest developments. New patterns of government formation, challenges to the established political parties, ever-deepening, if sometimes ambivalent, involvement in the process of European integration, a growing role in the politics of Northern Ireland and sustained discussion of gender issues are among these developments – along with evidence, revealed by several tribunals of enquiry, that Irish politics is not as free of corruption as many had assumed.
