Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Papers on the Past Proceedings and Experience of the Society of Friends, in Connection With the Education of Youth: Read at the Meetings of the Friends' Educational Society, at Ackworth, in the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 In the preface to this little book, it is stated that about six years since, a meeting of divers good friends took place concerning children's education, and teaching the languages; and what then was fully agreed on and writ down, was in substance, that they had agreed to lay aside the heathenish books, and the old corrupt grammars taken out of them, and set up the Scriptures of Truth, and what may be savoury, and good matter that may not corrupt children's minds. For the carrying out of this purpose they state that they had composed two books, instead of such grammars, as they had laid aside, because of the corrupt matter found in them. It is said, We deny nothing for children's learning that may be honest and useful for them to know, whether relating to divine principles, or that may be outwardly serviceable for them to learn in regard to the outward creation. We doubt much whether these elementary books were ever generally used in the other schools, which were doubtless soon Opened to meet the growing wants of the body. In the year 1671, by a memorandum found among the papers in Devonshire House, there appear to have been fifteen boarding schools, at least, in the country, kept by Friends; and it is probable this list is not a complete one. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duties of Parents, in Regard to the Schools Where Their Children Are Instructed: A Lecture Delivered Before the American Institute of Instruction at Their Fifth Annual Meeting The duties which devolve'upon parents, in reference to the schools where their children are to be educated, commence with the first arrangements for securing a teacher. T he duty of selecting and engaging a teacher is usually assigned, it is true, to a committee; but III a country so thoroughly republican as ours is, such a com mirtee will almost always act in accordance with what they suppose to be the public voice. If, therefore, in their daily intercourse with the various parents from whom they receive their commission to act, they see in dications of indifference, or hear'remar'ks implying that close economy is the main thing to be consulted, it will make an impression upon them which will have great influence when they come together to act. On the other hand, if the several members of such a committee per ceive that the community feel a special interest in the. Business, that they are ready to sustain them in effectual measures, and that parents are all looking forward with interest to their decision, andto the arrangements which they are to be the means of carrying into effect, they will be animated and encouraged. They will feel that their duties are of some importance, and that they are felt to be of importance by the community around them, and they will accordingly be more circumspect, more can tious, and more efficient in every step they take. What should be the primary aim of the teacher? These are fundamental questions. On their correct answer depends the attitude of the teacher and of parents, and the attitude governs the results. The central principle of education is the self activity of the child. To this principle all others are subservient. Without the self-activity of the child little can be accomplished.
