Book Paradise of the Pacific

Download or read book Paradise of the Pacific written by Susanna Moore and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Hawaii may be said to be the story of arrivals -- from the eruption of volcanoes on the ocean floor 18,000 feet below to the first hardy seeds that over millennia found their way to the islands, and the confused birds blown from their migratory routes. Early Polynesian adventurers sailed across the Pacific in double canoes. Spanish galleons en route to the Philippines and British navigators in search of a Northwest Passage were soon followed by pious Protestant missionaries, shipwrecked sailors, and rowdy Irish poachers escaped from Botany Bay -- all wanderers washed ashore. This is true of many cultures, but in Hawaii, no one seems to have left. And in Hawaii, a set of myths accompanied each of these migrants -- legends that shape our understanding of this mysterious place. Susanna Moore pieces together the story of late-eighteenth-century Hawaii -- its kings and queens, gods and goddesses, missionaries, migrants, and explorers -- a not-so-distant time of abrupt transition, in which an isolated pagan world of human sacrifice and strict taboo, without a currency or a written language, was confronted with the equally ritualized world of capitalism, Western education, and Christian values.

Book excerpt: Booklet issued by the Kilauea Volcano House Company and the Oahu Railway and Land Company to introduce the world to the Hawaiian Islands, and to promote their beauty, their travel and health resort value, and their strategic location for commerce of the Western Ocean. "The geography, history and characteristics of the Islands are so little known to the outside world, that a brief summary of historical and practical information is incorporated herewith, in the belief that it will lend added interest to a work primarily designed to illustrate the beautiful rather than the practical features of the Island Kingdom" ("Prefatory"). The Kilauea Volcano House Company, incorporated in 1891, controlled the land on which the volcano lay, on which it had built a hotel at the brink of the crater, elegant sulphur steam baths, and fifteen miles of scenic drives to adjacent craters and precipices through tropical jungle and fern forests, and partnered with the Oceanic Steamship Company to bring tourists to Hawaii to visit the volcano. The Oahu Railway, incorporated in 1888, owned railroad line between Honolulu and the port of Pearl River (Pearl Harbor) and the Ewa Plantation, in addition to 70,000 acres of land for development of sugar plantations.

Download or read book Paradise in the Pacific The Life Culture Kings and History of Hawaii and Honolulu Seen Firsthand by a Traveller to the Hawaiian Islands in written by William R. Bliss and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William R. Bliss, a writer who visited Hawaii in the 1870s, wrote this evocative and vivid account of life on the island; how the native people lived day-to-day and traded with the Americans with whom they became close. An excellent account of historic Hawaii, Paradise in the Pacific offers a detailed and clear portrait of how life was. Bliss is keen to brief the reader on the history of the isles; particularly its kings, and how the peoples arrived and settled in what were then termed the 'Sandwich Islands'. Bliss demonstrates that all parts of Hawaii's culture, from its festivals to its courtrooms to its domestic life, are affected by old beliefs. The author seeks accuracy; the darker side of Hawaiian life, such as the segregated villages where leprosy is prominent, receive mention. Volcanic eruptions and destruction which changed the landscape are discussed. Lightheartedly, we hear about the islands' politics; disputatious yet lively, with populism and appeals to traditional values commonplace.
