Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Parables of the Kingdom The thirteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew 1s not only a very interesting, but also a very important chapter, containing as it does the unfolding of the mysteries of the Kingdom of the heavens: even the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God - Eph. 3: 9. This chapter contains seven parables which according to verse 53 were all delivered by the Savior up on one and the same occasion, and in these seven parables the Lord Jesus clearly sets forth the Truth concerning the establishment and the growth of the Kingdom of the Heavens in this age. In verses 1 3 we see that Jesus leaves the house In which He had been stay ing with His disciples and goes down to the seaside where He spake many things to the multitudes in parables and without a par able spake He not unto them. (v. 34. Then in v. 10 immediately after He had finished the first parable, the disciples asked Him why speakest thou unto them in parables? We. Their own history showed that He was not the God of the Hebrews only but the God of the Gentiles also; and the King dom which their prophets foretold was not a Hebrew Kingdom only but a world Kingdom. And all they in the Synagogue says the sacred historian, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him'down headlong, but he passing through the midst of them went his way. Book The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied Classic Reprint written by Francis William Bourdillon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied The words the kingdom of heaven is like, or similar words, are found at the beginning of a large number of the parables; and if this work were to be read through continuously, it might have been enough to explain, once for all, what those words mean. But as each chapter is meant to be read by itself, and independently of the rest, it has been thought necessary to give a short explanation of these words almost as often as they occur. Occasional repe titions will therefore be noticed, for which allowance is asked on the ground just stated. As a general rule, the parables have been arranged in the order in which they may be believed to have been spoken; not however without exception, when there seemed any good reason for departing from this plan. Indeed, strict accuracy in this respect is not attainable. Nor is it of anv great moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord This parable had to be spoken. It gave ex pression to thoughts which burdened the mind of Jesus throughout His ministry. On the day He uttered it, he had left the house and was sitting by the sea-side, and there were gathered unto Him great multitudes. He had no difficulty in finding an audience. It is one of the greatest pleasures to listen to a good speaker. It is a pleasure which attracts young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. A good speaker is always sure of an audience, and especially where he has not to encounter the rivalry of books. But as Jesus watched the crowd assembling, and perceived the various dispositions with which the people came, He could not but reflect how much of what He had to say must certainly be lost on many. He knew He had that to tell men which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament F the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's Notes on the Parables of the New Testament one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic teaching by comparison which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked and to bring out - what in these days it is especially meces sary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect-revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Book The Parables of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Alfred Nevin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus The mode of teaching by parables is one of great antiquity. It was, as we have already seen, practiced under the Old Testament dispensation, and appears to have been very generally afterward adopted by the rabbis even down to the time of Christ. Its advantages are obvious. Experience has demonstrated that this sort of composition is better calculated to command attention, to captivate the imagination, to affect the heart, and to make deep and lasting impressions on the memory, than the most ingenious and most elegant discourses. Besides, the very obscurity in which para bles are sometimes involved has the effect of exciting a greater degree of curiosity and interest, and of urging the mind to a more vigorous exertion of its powers, than any other mode of instruction. There is some thing for the understanding to work upon, and when the concealed meaning is at length elicited, we are apt to value ourselves on the discovery, as the effect of our own penetration and discernment, and for that very rea son to pay more regard to the moral it conveys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables: Read in the Light of the Present Day Dr. Guthrie was born at Brechin, in Forfarshire, July 12, 1803, and was a younger son of the late Mr. David Guthrie, merchant and banker in that ancient city. The family was one of great respectability and considerable antiquity, having been connected with Brechin for more than two hundred years. With one or two short intervals the office of Provost has been held in succession by five members of the family, the present occupant being John Guthrie, M.D., Dr. Guthrie's nephew. It is probable, but not certain, that Dr. Guthrie was a lineal descendant of the well-known Rev. William Guthrie, author of the "Trial of a Saving Interest in Christ," who was cousin of James Guthrie, the martyr. At the very least he was a kinsman of both, and Dr. Guthrie used to refer with pride to his connection with the martyr, who was not only, like himself, a Forfarshire man, but connected with the town of Brechin, having been owner of a small estate in its immediate neighbourhood. Alexander, one of Dr. Guthrie's elder brothers, was a medical man, who enjoyed a large practice and no small local reputation. Book The Old Testament Parables Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament Parables Classic Reprint written by John Macdougall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in Whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Lord Jesus According to S. Matthew Left without excuse. As the relations hereafter to be rep resented are new, and bound up with His own divine per son and work, it is fitting, also, that they should find a new vehicle of expression. Not as the completion of the old, but as the beginning of a new dispensation, does Jesus now set Himself forth. It is no longer as a Jew to Jews that He speaks, but to men as men. It is meet and right that the language which He makes use of, accordingly, should not be that of any school, or sect, or party, but a language taken from the symbolism of nature itself, and common to all men'. The appeal He makes, in like man ner, is to the conscience and heart of man, and not to the intellect or logical faculty, for the reason that the kingdom which He comes to establish in the world is a spiritual kingdom, and one whose foundations are to rest upon the moral convictions of men.
