Book Egyptology at the Dawn of the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Egyptology at the Dawn of the Twenty first Century written by Zahi A. Hawass and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive three-volume set marks the publication of the proceedings of the Eighth International Congress of Egyptologists, held in Cairo in 2000, the largest Congress since the inaugural meeting in 1979. Organized thematically to reflect the breadth and depth of the material presented at this event, these papers provide a survey of current Egyptological research at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The proceedings include the eight Millennium Debates led by esteemed Egyptologists, addressing key issues in the field, as well as nearly every paper presented at the Congress. The 275 papers cover the whole spectrum of Egyptological research. Grouped under the themes of archaeology, history, religion, language, conservation, and museology, and written in English, French, and German, these contributions together form the most comprehensive picture of Egyptology today.

Book The Mortuary Papyrus of Padikakem

Download or read book The Mortuary Papyrus of Padikakem written by Yekaterina Barbash and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study is the first translation of the papyrus of Padikakem, with an extensive commentary. The complete early Ptolemaic manuscript from the Walters Art Museum contains two uncommon texts in hieratic. The initial text, a Ritual of Introducing the Multitude on the Last Day of Tekh, is identified as a temple liturgy by its rubric title, while its themes recall love poetry and the Lamentations of Isis and Nephthys. The second text, a rarely attested Book III of glorification spells (sakhw) has an exclusively mortuary character. The spells of this section largely originate in the Pyramid Texts and include specific instructions for recitation by the lector priest. The two texts are established as a coherent composition that belongs to the Greco-Roman tradition of merging Egyptian funerary practices with temple liturgies. The diverse sources and themes of the texts shed light on the evolution of Osirian and mortuary theologies from the Old Kingdom onwards. The study also thoroughly examines the development of grammar and paleography among the parallels.

Book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity

Download or read book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity written by John Coleman Darnell and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2004 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom, enigmatic texts were created on the basis of non-standardized lists of characters and phonetic signs, the exact principles of which are still unclear to this day. For the first time, this study examines in detail the three most comprehensive known inscription texts from the New Kingdom, which were discovered in the tombs of Tutenchamun, Ramses VI and Ramses IX. Darnell shows that these three texts have a theological, iconographic and formal connection, and calls them collectively the "Book of the Solar-Osirian Unity". Differentiated and lively, he presents the content and theological peculiarities of these texts that deal with the afterlife with each other and in relation to other enigmatic texts of the new as well as the Middle and Old Kingdom.

Book The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus

Download or read book The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus written by Gay Robins and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Found in Thebes on the 1850s, the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus dates back in its origins to the age of the great pyramid builders. The ancient Egyptians were superb arithmeticians, with enough understanding of geometry and trigonomentry to make their architectural triumphs possible. From the papyrus we can learn how young pupils were subjected to a rigorous training in the manipulation of numbers that enabled the fully-flegded scribe to control not only the design and construction of huge monuments, but also the more mundane activities of everyday life. Some of their methods are similar to those of today; others have been superseded, but nevertheless retain a fascination.

Book excerpt: Eternal Egypt: Ancient Rituals for the Modern World is the first comprehensive collection of important temple rituals performed throughout Egypt during the time of the pharaohs. The author presents seven key rites from official temple records and ancient esoteric texts for personal or group use. This guidebook also: - presents rituals in a form designed to assist initiates in restoring the ancient rites of Egypt; - provides for modern usage, key ritual texts coming solely from authenticated ancient sources; - contains easy to follow commentaries and background information on each ritual, including symbolism and mythology not previously available in one book; - gives text with commentary for the “Opening of the Mouth” ceremony; - offers practical information for conducting these rituals in today’s world. Formerly only available to the scholar and professional Egyptologist, these ritual texts reveal the deeply spiritual understanding of humanity’s relationship to divinity that characterized the ancient Egyptian sense of the sacred. This is a practical intermediate level text for those wishing to worship the great deities of ancient Egypt in as authentic a manner as possible, and by so doing tap into the great spiritual heritage that sustained Egyptian culture for over three thousand years.
