This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pope and the Council We have written under a deep sense of anxiety in presence of a serious danger, threatening primarily the internal condition of the Catholic Church, and then as is inevitable with what affects a corporation includ ing 180 millions of men - destined to assume vaster dimensions, and take the shape of a great social pro blem, which cannot be without its influence on eccle siastical communities and nations outside the Catholic Church. This danger does not date from yesterday, and did not begin with the proclamation of the Council. For some twenty-four years the reactionary movement in the Catholic Church, which is now swollen to a mighty torrent, has been manifesting itself, and now it is pre paring, like an advancing flood-tide, to take possession of the whole organic life of the Church by means of this Council. Download or read book The Early Papacy written by Adrian Fortescue and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Alcuin Reid Adrian Fortescue, a British apologist for the Catholic faith in the early part of the 20th century, wrote this classic of clear exposition on the faith of the early Church in the papacy based upon the writings of the Church fathers until 451. No ultramontanist, Fortescue can be a keen critic of personal failings of various Popes, but he shows through his brilliant assessment of the writings of the Church fathers that the early Church had a clear understanding of the primacy of Peter and a belief in the divinely given authority of the Pope in matters of faith and morals. Referring to the famous passage in Matthew 16:18 where Jesus confers his authority upon Peter as the head of the Apostles, and the first Pope, Fortescue says that, while Christians can continue to argue about the exact meaning of that passage from Scripture, and the various standards that are used for judgments about correct Christian teaching and belief, ""the only possible real standard is a living authority, an authority alive in the world at this moment, that can answer your difficulties, reject a false theory as it arises and say who is right in disputed interpretations of ancient documents."" Fortescue shows that the papacy actually seems to be one of the clearest and easiest dogmas to prove from the early Church. And it is his hope through this work that it will contribute to a ressourcement with regard to the office of the papacy among those in communion with the Bishop of Rome, and that it will assist those outside this communion to seek it out, confident that it is willed by Christ for all who would be joined to him in this life and in the next.

Book A History of the Papacy Vol 1

Download or read book A History of the Papacy Vol 1 written by M. Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 1: During the Period of the Reformation The result of many experiments and much discussion was the establishment of a General Council as the ultimate court of appeal. Unsuccessful through its crudity at Pisa, the con ciliar system asserted itself at Constance, and was strong enough to answer its immediate purpose, and end the Schism. But when it had done this, it could do nothing more. The abolition of ecclesiastical grievances was beyond its power. Men could not discover the interests of Christendom, because they were overlaid by conflicting interests of classes and nations. The Council, which expressed in the fullest manner the unity of Christendom, showed that that unity was illusory. The con ciliar principle was set up as a permanent factor in the organi sation of the Church, and men hoped that it might be more fortunate in the future. The condition of Europe and the fortunes of the Papacy offered a brilliant opportunity to the Council of Basel. In some things it succeeded; but it was helpless to reorganise the Church. It attacked, instead of reforming, the Papacy: it proposed to hand over the Church to a self-constituted parlia' ment. The Council of Constance failed because it represented Christendom too faithfully, even to its national dissensions. The Council of Basel failed because, in its endeavour to avoid that danger, it represented nothing save the pretensions of a self-elected, self-seeking body of ecclesiastics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Temporal Power of the Papacy: A Historical Review With Observations Upon the Council of the Vatican The rapid march of events in connection with the so-called (ecumenical Council might induce me to modify some of the Opinions expressed respecting this remarkable phenomenon; but where the scene changes so unexpectedly from day to day, I have felt it imprudent to postpone the publication for the sake of a more confident exposition of what is, after all, a subsidiary inci dent of my narrative. The question of the Fall of the Papacy is indeed one of the very deepest import; but though it may be precipitated by the event which Pope Pius IX believes ordained of God for its full development and glory, the real causes of its decay have been long in operation, and can neither be eradicated nor greatly aggravated by the foregone conclusions of an assem bly, however august, without freedom of debate or power of administration, and sworn to ratify the decisions of him who alone receives the plenitude of power neither from the Apostles, nor from Councils, but immediately from Christ!'
