Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Flag at Panama: A Story of the Building of the Panama Canal Big Bill Bolger to steal the old French dredges, described in my book, is based on a sim ilar incident of real life. The Big Slide at the Culebra Cut, which forms the basis of the closing chapters, is remembered by the veteran canal worker with a shudder. As a matter of fact there have been several of these slides in the past four years with as devastating a result as that pictured in my story. I have tried to present to you the big facts of the Panama Canal and to give you a bird's-eye glimpse of the wonderful engineering feat which is to unite the world's two greatest oceans. If I have succeeded, and have at the same time won your sympathy for Rod Standish and the battles he was called upon to fight, I will be well repaid. Incidentally, I hope in the near future to give you a similar picture of other great industrial achievements and great business enterprises, which are making the events of peace more stir ring in our country than many of the events of war. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Sam's Panama Canal and World History, Accompanying the Panama Canal Flat-Globe: Its Achievement an Honor to the United States and a Blessing to the World We State With Satisfaction that the Panama Canal Flat-Globe and Geographical World History give in a concise, yet exhaustive form, an up-to-date presentation of world-wide geography that has no counterpart. They also comprise a new and advanced system of geographical review and reference that has never existed before, in a form that is easy to understand and convenient to use. Further, they give a full illustration and description of the Panama Canal, and the facts about the Suez Canal by the highest authority. This Globe and History mark a new departure in the consideration of the complete geography of the world. They cover fully the illustration, explanation and description of the earth upon which we live. Each of the two parts (Globe and History) is necessary to the intelligent and satisfactory use of the other. Together, they comprise a product needed to-day in every family circle and business place. Panama Canal Books, geographies, maps, atlases, charts and the geographical part of encyclopedias are fragmentary and disconnected presentations, whereas the Panama Canal Flat-Globe and Geographical World History cover the subject of world-wide geography from all points, connectedly and completely. The Panama Canal Flat-Globe illustrates the whole world. It indicates upon its surface, in their proper relationship, the oceans and seas, continents, countries and islands, the continental systems of great railroads, rivers, lakes and mountains. It also gives the latitude, longitude, time around the world, steamship and cable routes, prevailing winds, ocean currents, ice-drifts, etc., and clearly shows the latest routings of the ocean highways with proper distances through the Panama and Suez Canals. The Geographical World History explains the subject of world-wide geography under the heads of Physical Geography and the phenomena and forces of nature; Mathematical Geography, with its interesting data in relation to time, climate and seasons; and national or political geography, dividing the continents into their numerous sections of governmental control; with frequent reference to the Flat-Globe to give the proper and clear understanding of these subjects. The History of the Ages, and of the 2,000,000,000, people who inhabit the earth together with their activities, is shown in the national and political sub-divisions of the world, the development of its resources, ocean and land transportation facilities and means of intercommunication, and the industrial, commercial and agricultural activities of the various races. All these subjects are clearly presented in this production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book International Canals

Download or read book International Canals written by Edward Arthur Whittuck and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparation for the peace conference that was expected to follow World War I, in the spring of 1917 the British Foreign Office established a special section responsible for preparing background information for use by British delegates to the conference. International Canals is Number 150 in a series of more than 160 studies produced by the section, most of which were published after the conclusion of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. Written by Edward Arthur Whittuck (1844-1924), a specialist in Roman and international law associated with the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science, the study is one of relatively few in the series issued under the name of an individual author. The book is concerned with the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal, "interoceanic canals," which, by virtue of their commercial and strategic importance, had acquired a special status under international law. The section on the Suez Canal discusses the background to the building of the canal, the legal and practical aspects regarding its protection, and the negotiations to internationalize the canal. The latter led to the conclusion of the Convention of 1888, signed by nine European powers, which stipulated that "the Suez Maritime Canal shall always be free and open, in time of war as in time of peace, to every vessel of commerce or of war, without distinction of flag." The section devoted to the Panama Canal covers the history of antagonism between the United States and Great Britain over the construction and operation of an isthmian canal in the Western hemisphere. It focuses on the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 and the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1901, which superseded the earlier agreement. A concluding section discusses the roles played by both canals during World War I. The appendix includes the texts of the main treaties governing the international legal status of the canals.
