Book The Kalevala

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elias lönnrot
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2008-10-09
  • ISBN : 0191637726
  • Pages : 736 pages

Download or read book The Kalevala written by Elias lönnrot and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kalevala is the great Finnish epic, which like the Iliad and the Odyssey, grew out of a rich oral tradition with prehistoric roots. During the first millenium of our era, speakers of Uralic languages (those outside the Indo-European group) who had settled in the Baltic region of Karelia, that straddles the border of eastern Finland and north-west Russia, developed an oral poetry that was to last into the nineteenth century. This poetry provided the basis of the Kalevala. It was assembled in the 1840s by the Finnish scholar Elias Lönnrot, who took `dictation' from the performance of a folk singer, in much the same way as our great collections from the past, from Homeric poems to medieval songs and epics, have probably been set down. Published in 1849, it played a central role in the march towards Finnish independence and inspired some of Sibelius's greatest works. This new and exciting translation by poet Keith Bosley, prize-winning translator of the anthology Finnish Folk Poetry: Epic, is the first truly to combine liveliness with accuracy in a way which reflects the richness of the original. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Download or read book Gambler s Book of Poetry written by Scott Cool and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-02-17 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In those ancient days a few thousand years ago, after the Creation but before the days of Noah when "God saw that wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5), there were descendants of Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve, who still believed in God and who tried to do right. Many of them were inhabitants of Qiryah-Seth, the most powerful, prosperous city-state of the early earth. It was a time of world-wide mild climate, when men of high intelligence and strength co-existed with dinosaurs. Living many centuries was considered normal. All peoples spoke a common language. Some, such as the Sethites, possessed great knowledge. Others chose to chiefly utilize different natural abilities, such as strength. There were giants - the proud, haughty Nephilites, who dwelt in the city of Qiryah-Nephil, and who traveled as merchants and mercenaries. The lofty ambitions of their ruler, the High Mellek, would prove deadly to many. Against this backdrop occurs the tale of Jared, a young Sethite army officer, and his fellow soldiers as they suffer the terrors of the Nefeer Jungle - huge, fearsome beasts and the legendary Akalbasars - to rescue the plans of the world's most destructive weapon and the woman he loves from the hands of the mighty, arrogant Nephilites.

Book Re appropriating Marvelous Fables

Download or read book Re appropriating Marvelous Fables written by Noël Pretila and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Hatch provided a colorful portrait of the religious world to which Justin Martyr belonged: "The main subject-matter of . . . literary education [amongst the pagans] was the poets. . . . They were read as we read the Bible. They were committed to memory. The minds of men were saturated with them. A quotation from Homer or from a tragic poet was apposite on all occasions and in every kind of society" (The Influence of Greek Ideas on Christianity, 1957). So when some of these pagans converted to Christianity in Justin's day, is it reasonable to assume that they simply "forgot" these mythical narratives in which they had been reared from childhood? Re-appropriating "Marvelous Fables" sets out to argue that this was hardly the case. Rather, Justin in 1 Apology can be seen taking full advantage of this mythical framework that still loomed large in the minds of fledgling Christian believers and students in his care--masterfully re-appropriating this popular form of religious discourse for the purpose of solidifying their newfound faith.

Book The Poetry of Du Fu

Download or read book The Poetry of Du Fu written by Stephen Owen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 2741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook. The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation. Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

Book Collected Poems 1950 1993

  • Author : Vernon Scannell
  • Publisher : Faber & Faber
  • Release : 2013-07-04
  • ISBN : 0571308805
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Collected Poems 1950 1993 written by Vernon Scannell and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002 Vernon Scannell wrote the following: 'It has been my firm belief since I first began to attempt the art of poetry that the making of a poem should be, as Yeats asserted, a difficult business. However, I have always felt reservations about what seems to me the only partially true belief , stated by both Eliot and Hopkins in their different ways, that the meaning of a poem is of less significance than its structure and texture, Eliot's 'nice bit of meat for the house-dog.' Ideally the poem should be the perfection of expression of meaning inseparable from the methods by which that expression is achieved. As Paul Valéry has said, 'A man is a poet if the difficulties inherent in his art provide him with ideas; he is not a poet if they deprive him if ideas.' That was an important statement, his credo. It can accurately be said that almost every poem in this collected volume bears testimony to it. Although not covering the full span of his career - Scannell didn't die until 2007 and was writing almost literally until the very end - the body of his work is here and how impressive it is. On immaculate display is a conspectus of poems embracing the narrative, lyrical, satirical and contemplative. There are poems of pathos and comedy, intelligence and passion: whatever their form, free verse or rhyming, tenor or subject, they are executed with unfailing craftsmanship. In his obituary of Vernon Scannell, Alan Brownjohn wrote, 'What might have been considered unusual given a colourful, even swashbuckling, personality that spawned innumerable anecdotes, was his fastidious procedure as a poet, his unflinching focus on the age-old themes of love, war and death, his concern for ''a real involvement with living experience''. Craft and care, and for that matter clarity and accessibility, were unquestionable necessities if you were serious about the art; students on Scannell's creative writing courses were liable to be sat down, hangover or not, to write a sonnet after breakfast.'' 'Scannell is one of what appears to be a vanishing breed, a poet of technical accomplishment who understands that poetry, like the other arts, is a craft as well.' Charles Osborne, Sunday Telegraph 'You actually want to go back and revisit the poems many times. Their shrewd structures hold their elements firmly in place and they resonate also with the kind of humanity time is generous to . . . Scannell has earned a place in the tradition of English poetry.' Paul Fussell, Poetry Review '. . . accurate, humane, humorous, often eloquent and always well-made poems.' Anthony Thwaite, Sunday Telegraph
