Book excerpt: Under a canopy of moss-covered live oaks rests Palmetto. The city occupies a natural peninsula bounded by the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay. The first settlers claimed land under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842, and despite the ravages of Seminole raids and epidemics, the heartiest of the pioneers established Palmetto's reputation as a thriving farming and fishing community. In 1868, Samuel Sparks Lamb named the city "Palmetto," inspired by the abundant foliage of palmetto bushes that reminded him of his birthplace in South Carolina. He envisioned a city with a grand thoroughfare and a sturdy wharf jutting into the mile-wide Manatee River, which Lamb considered the gateway for Palmetto's agricultural commerce. Palmetto became a city in 1897, but by the early 1900s, the railroad shifted the center of activity from the waterfront to the train depot, located on Tenth Street. Palmetto's appearance and identity have changed over the years, but its residents continue to regard the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay as the community's grandest assets.

As she suggests, it was not the 1930’s anymore, and the GI Bill boys were poised to give America an authentic and robust middle class. Stella Suberman is the author of two popular and well-reviewed titles: The Jew Store and When It Was OurWar. In its starred review, Booklist called The Jew Store “an absolute pleasure,” and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that it was “valuable history as well as a moving story.” When It Was Our War received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and in another starred review, Kirkus Reviews described it as “Engaging . . . Among the plantations in the Charleston District, part of which was to become Berkeley County, were four overlapping the area that was later to be established as the city of Hanahan. Following the Civil War, as the plantations were broken up into many small farms and the city of Charleston expanded, a search began for a nearby, new source of fresh water to replace water from contaminated wells. That search led to Goose Creek, where, in 1903, a dam was built and a pumping station established, named Hanahan for the chairman of the Charleston Water Commission. Military installations and housing, thriving businesses, and schools began to meet the needs of the developing community. Hanahan would grow over the years and incorporate into a city in 1973, known for its beautiful landscape and community culture. Today, Hanahan is the heart of the Lowcountry in location and, most importantly, in spirit. Despite its growth, it maintains the original small-town feel, drawing and keeping people into this community that they love.
