Book excerpt: The Palliser Expedition is one of the great works in Canadian exploration literature and the only full-scale account of the British North America Exploring Expedition. This lively narrative tells of the famous adventures of John Palliser, one of the first to explore and document vast areas of what is now western Canada. Palliser and his colleagues accumulated a wealth of new scientific and geological knowledge, providing some of the first detailed information about the plants, animals, soil, rocks, and climate of the land they had traversed. They discovered formerly unknown passes through the Rocky Mountains, and determined that much of this immense country was suitable for settlement. Spry describes what was known about the prairies in the late 1850s and why the British government accepted Palliser's proposal to dispatch a team to the area between Lake Superior and the Pacific Coast. She explains what the expedition learned during its three years, offering at the same time an intimate understanding of these men and their perspective on the region. Much more than the story of a scientific survey, The Palliser Expedition provides a revealing look at the western interior in the last years of the Old Northwest before it became home to countless thousands of homesteaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberta's iconic river has been dammed and plumbed, made to spin hydro-electric turbines, and used to cleanse Calgary. Artificial lakes in the mountains rearrange its flow; downstream weirs and ditches divert it to irrigate the parched prairie. Far from being wild, the Bow is now very much a human product: its fish are as manufactured as its altered flow, changed water quality, and newly stabilized and forested banks. The River Returns brings the story of the Bow River's transformation full circle through an exploration of the recent revolution in environmental thinking and regulation that has led to new limits on what might be done with and to the river. Rivers have been studied from many perspectives, but too often the relationship between nature and people, between rivers and the cultures that have grown up beside them, have been separated. The River Returns illuminates the ways in which humans, both inadvertently and consciously, have interacted with nature to make the Bow.

Book Life of the Trail 3

Download or read book Life of the Trail 3 written by Emerson Sanford and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Life of the Trail" is a fascinating series that guides today's hikers and armchair travelers through the stories of historic routes in the Canadian Rockies. When authors Emerson Sanford and Janice Sanford Beck began backpacking together nearly 20 years ago, they often wondered whose footsteps they were retracing and how today's trails through the Rockies came to be there. In "Life of the Trail," they share their findings with adventurers and history buffs alike. "Life of the Trail 3: The Historic Route from Old Bow Fort to Jasper" starts at the remains of Peigan Post, originally built in 1832 and still visible today, located at the west end of the Morley Reserve. This entire route is now a contemporary road, but early in the 20th century the section north of Lake Louise was the main trail heading north and was very busy with pioneers, adventurers and explorers. The trail has been divided into three sections: Old Bow Fort to Lake Louise, Lake Louise to Sunwapta Pass and Sunwapta Pass to Jasper.
