Covering two main aspects of politics—the different manifestations of politics and the dilemmas created by these politics—he presents the predicament of the Palestinian-Arab minority in Israel, which derives from the ethnic character of the State of Israel and their isolation from other Palestinians, and proposes the Israeli-Palestinian bi-national state as a suitable resolution not only for this problem but also for the main Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Book Higher Education and the Palestinian Arab Minority in Israel

Download or read book Higher Education and the Palestinian Arab Minority in Israel written by Khalid Arar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education and the Palestinian Minority in Israel examines perceptions concerning the characteristics of higher education acquisition in the indigenous Palestinian Arab minority in Israel. Arar and Haj-Yehia show that Palestinian Arabs in Israel clearly understand the benefit of an academic degree as a lever for social status and integration within the state of Israel. The authors discuss difficulties met by Palestinian high school graduates when they attempt to enter Israel's higher education institutes, and the alternative phenomenon of studying abroad. The cultural difference between Palestinian traditional communities and 'Western' Israeli campuses exposes Arab students to a mix of ethnicities and nationalities, which proves to be a difficult, transformative experience. The book analyzes patterns of higher education acquisition among the indigenous Palestinian minority, describing the disciplines they choose, the challenges they encounter, particularly for Palestinian women students, and explore the implications for the Palestinian minority and Israeli society.

Book The Palestinian Arab Citizens of Israel Towards the Internationalisation of National Aspirations

Download or read book The Palestinian Arab Citizens of Israel Towards the Internationalisation of National Aspirations written by Ilham Shahbari and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relations between the Israeli state and its Arab citizens have been distorted by the perception that national security concerns require the full rights of citizenship to be restricted for members of the Arab community. However, the national security of the state can also be affected by a poor reputation in the international community, which plays a vital role in sustaining the existence of the state. This created a space for Arab intelligentsia to use internationalisation as a means to promote their cause. This study is designed to explore and analyse the internationalisation process and its impact regarding the Arab community in Israel. It is a beneficial source to academics, experts, policymakers, journalists and other experts and interested members of the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The struggle between Israelis and Palestinians has proven to be one of the most complex and intractable conflicts of our time, persisting for more than a century despite the efforts of leaders worldwide. In National Minority, Regional Majority, Yitzhak Reiter reexamines the relationship between the Jewish majority and the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel, focusing on the unique dynamic at work there between a religiously and ethnically defined majority and a significant national minority. With assurance and erudition, Reiter explores the complicated factors that influence the ethnonational conflict. Drawing extensively on the theory of “interlocking conflicts,” the author chronicles the pattern of alternating tranquility and rebellion in Jewish-Arab relations. Reiter’s meticulous research and nuanced analysis yield a sophisticated interpretation of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians and offer a powerful approach toward conflict management.

Book Palestinian Ethnonationalism in Israel

Download or read book Palestinian Ethnonationalism in Israel written by Oded Haklai and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabs make up approximately 20 percent of the population within Israel's borders. Until the 1970s, Arab citizens of Israel were a mostly acquiescent group, but in recent decades political activism has increased dramatically among members of this minority. Certain activists within this population claim that they are a national and indigenous minority dispossessed by more recent settlers from Europe. Ethnically based political organizations inside Israel are making nationalist demands and challenging the Jewish foundations of the state. Palestinian Ethnonationalism in Israel investigates the rise of this new movement, which has important implications for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as a whole. Political scientist Oded Haklai has written the first book to examine this manifestation of Palestinian nationalism in Israel. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with key figures, Haklai investigates how the debate over Arab minority rights within the Jewish state has given way to questioning the foundational principles of that state. This ground-breaking book not only explains the transitions in Palestinian Arab political activism in Israel but also presents new theoretical arguments about the relationship between states and societies. Haklai traces the source of Arab ethnonationalist mobilization to broader changes in the Israeli state, such as the decentralization of authority, an increase in political competition, intra-Jewish fragmentation, and a more liberalized economy. Palestinian Ethnonationalism in Israel avoids oversimplified explanations of ethnic conflict. Haklai's carefully researched and insightful analysis covers a neglected aspect of Israeli politics and Arab life outside the West Bank and Gaza. Scholars and policy makers interested in the future of Israel and peace in the Middle East will find it especially valuable.

Book Education Empowerment and Control

Download or read book Education Empowerment and Control written by Majid Al-Haj and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education, Empowerment, and Control is about the education of the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel from the establishment of the state of Israel to the present. Using a comparative approach, the study throughout juxtaposes Arab and Hebrew educational systems in terms of administration, resources, curricula contents, and returns. Developments in education are analyzed in conjunction with wide demographic, economic, and sociopolitical changes. Al-Haj explores the expectations of the Palestinian community on the one hand and dominant groups on the other, showing that whereas Palestinians have seen education as a source of empowerment, government groups have seen it as a mechanism of social control. The book also sheds light on the wider issue of education and social change among developing minorities in the postcolonial era. Al-Haj examines modernization, underdevelopment, and control in order to delineate the role education plays among a national minority that is marginalized at the group level and denied access to the national opportunity structure.

Book The Palestinians in Israel

Download or read book The Palestinians in Israel written by Elia T. Zureik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of The Palestinians in Israel (1979) is the position of the Arab minority in Israel, from being a majority to becoming a minority. By using the framework of internal colonialism, it provides evidence which highlights the social class transformations of the Palestinians in Israel from peasantry to proletariat, the patterns of land alienation, and the nature of inter-ethnic contacts which typify Israeli–Palestinian relations. It looks at Arab social structure in pre-1948 Palestine, discusses the Arabs as they appear in Israeli social science writings, describes the transformation of Arab class structure in Israel, and considers the politicization of Israeli Arabs.

Book Arab Minority Nationalism in Israel

Download or read book Arab Minority Nationalism in Israel written by Amal Jamal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National minorities and their behaviour have become a central topic in comparative politics in the last few decades. Using the relationship between the state of Israel and the Arab national minority as a case study, this book provides a thorough examination of minority nationalism and state-minority relations in Israel. Placing the case of the Arab national minority in Israel within a comparative framework, the author analyses major debates taking place in the field of collective action, social movements, civil society and indigenous rights. He demonstrates the impact of the state regime on the political behaviours of the minorities, and sheds light on the similarities and differences between various types of minority nationalisms and the nature of the relationship such minorities could have with their states. Drawing empirical and theoretical conclusions that contribute to studies of Israeli politics, political minorities, indigenous populations and conflict issues, this book will be a valuable reference for students and those in policy working on issues around Israeli politics, Palestinian politics and the broader Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
