Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galactic Spectrum Award nomination • Locus Recommended Reading List • Epic fantasy series with character-driven intrigue and spectacular magic Simon, the court painter of Branion, was the closest friend of the kingdom’s ruler, Marsellus. Even though Marsellus was the vessel of the Flame and Simon was a follower of the opposing Essusiate religion, Simon was still Marselllus’ staunchest ally and defender—instead of Marsellus’ own priests and guards. Yet not even Simon could protect Marsellus from unexpected treachery within the court. After an assassin ends Marsellus’ reign, it was Simon who became the champion and rescue of the new royal leader, Marsellus’ five-year-old daughter Kassandra. With civil and religious war threatening the suddenly leaderless realm, Simon has no choice but to flee the country with Kassandra. Pursued by the very forces which should have been the new ruler’s protectors, Simon and a most-unlikely band of companions have to keep both the child and her inherited powers hidden—until they can reach the one person who could offer Kassandra sanctuary and a chance, however desperate, of regaining her kingdom.

Book excerpt: A major survey of Dame Laura Knight, first female Royal Academician and popular British artist of the 20th century. Laura Knight (1877–1970) was one of the most famous and popular English artists of the twentieth century. She was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, in 1965. In the following decades her realist style of painting fell out of fashion and her work become largely overlooked. A new generation has rediscovered her work, finding a contemporary resonance in her depictions of women at work, of people from marginalized communities and her contributions as a war artist. This beautifully illustrated book, which accompanies a major exhibition at MK Gallery, provides an overview of Knight's illustrious career: from her training at Nottingham Art School at the age of 13 and her time in North Yorkshire and Cornwall, to her visits to traveller communities and a segregated American hospital. It also features her circus, ballet and theatre scenes, paintings of women during the war and her late paintings of nature. The selection of over 160 works combines celebrated paintings with less known graphic and design works, including ceramics, jewellery and costumes that reflect the artist's enduring interest in the everyday activities of people from all walks of life.

Download or read book The Body Painter written by Pepper Winters and published by Pepper Winters. This book was released on 2019-08-17 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times Bestseller, Pepper Winters, comes The Master of Trickery Duet. An angsty, secretive romance where the heroine is selfless with her kindness and a hero who does his best to push her away. Set in a world of body paint, lies, and history. "Must be slim, able to stand for long periods of time, and be impervious to the cold.” The headline caught my attention. “Hours are negotiable, pay is minimal, clothing absolutely forbidden.” The second line piqued my curiosity. “Able to hold your bladder and tongue, refrain from opinions or suggestions, and be the perfect living canvas.” The third made me scowl. “Other attributes required: non-ticklish, contortionist, and obedient. Must also enjoy being studied while naked in a crowd.” The fourth made me shudder. “Call or email ‘YOUR SKIN, HIS CANVAS’ if interested in applying.” The final made my heart race. I should’ve kept scrolling past the advertisement. I should’ve applied for the boring receptionist job at minimum wage. I should’ve clicked on any other job where I got to keep my clothes on. But I didn’t. I applied. My interview is tomorrow… Finish this duet with The Living Canvas

Book excerpt: This is a portrait of Diego Velázquez, from his arrival at the court of King Philip IV of Spain in May 1622, to his death 38 years and several hundred paintings later. It is a portrait of a relationship that is not quite a friendship, between a king and his subject and between an artist and his subject. It is a portrait of a ruler, always on duty, and increasingly burdened by a life of public expectation and repeated private grief. And it is a portrait of a court collapsing under the weight of its own excess.

The Impressionist movement that began 130 years ago set artists free to experiment outdoors, capturing the fleeting effects and many moods of sunlight in their paintings by juxtaposing contrasting colors. Although those colors may not actually be apparent in nature, on canvas and paper they appear spontaneous and naturalistic. The skill is in knowing how to select and apply them. Impressionistic painting has not remained static over the decades. Artist Dustan Knight walks you through the techniques to achieving brilliant effects in a contemporary style. Using easy to work with watercolor and acrylic, she demonstrates through her own paintings, as well as others she has selected, the step-by-steps for dramatic atmospheric vistas and intimate garden landscapes.
Download or read book William Powell Frith written by William Powell Frith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Powell Frith (1819-1909) was the greatest British painter of the social scene since Hogarth. His panoramas of nineteenth-century life broke new ground in their depiction of the diverse London crowd, and they are now icons of their age. Frith’s popularity in his lifetime was unprecedented; on six separate occasions special railings had to be built at the Royal Academy to protect his paintings from an admiring public. Derby Day and The Railway Station are nearly as well known today as a century ago, yet the artist who painted them is now neglected. This book explores Frith's place in the development of Victorian painting: the impact of his unconventional private life on his work, his relationships with Hogarth and Dickens, his influence on popular illustration, the place of costume in his paintings, his female models, his painting materials and practice, and much more. The book makes an important contribution to the literature on art in the Victorian era and to our understanding of the nineteenth century.

Download or read book Morris Graves written by Vicki Halper and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morris Graves is a major American painter with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Morris Graves: Selected Letters draws on a vast cache of the his unpublished correspondence, dating from his teenage years until his death in 2001. Few visual artists of any era have left such a rich and wide-ranging collections of letters, which makes this body of work an unusual and valuable document in American art. The Graves correspondence is remarkable for its scope, variety, and depth. Written to many correspondents over long periods of time, the letters include the artist's reflections on his art, the art world, philosophy (Zen Buddhism and Vedanta in particular), architecture (Graves designed his homes and gardens), and relationships with family, friends, and lovers. Graves himself preserved most of the letters, or copies of them, and put no restrictions on their use. Other letters come from a wide range of private and institutional sources. Among the correspondents are Graves's family; Marian Willard, his art dealer; Richard Svare, his companion in the 1950s; and Nancy Wilson Ross, novelist and Buddhist scholar. Other notable figures with whom Graves corresponded are poet Carolyn Kizer, art critic Theodore Wolff, curator Peter Selz, choreographer Merce Cunningham (for whom Graves created a set design), and painter Mark Tobey. Recurrent themes in the Graves letters are the tensions between sociability and solitude; the desire to be free of the material world versus the need for material comfort; the dismissal of commerce and the desperate need for money; the pleasures and pitfalls of love; and the difficulties of the creative life. The letters are organized topically under the broad categories of people (family, friends, intimates), places (homes and travels), and art (finances and philosophy).
