Book Rajasthan Exploring Painted Shekhawati

Download or read book Rajasthan Exploring Painted Shekhawati written by Ilay Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cycling into rarely visited northern Rajasthan's tiny desert towns author discovers impressive buildings, their walls covered with vibrant paintings. Fascinated, he settles nearby and, exploring, finds that the main painted towns lie in the defunct administrative district of Shekhawati. Research reveals the unpublished writings and drawings of Col Lockett and Lt Boileau, who crossed Shekhawati in 1831. Both men are depicted in contemporary murals. Their mission was to enquire into, and record the brigandry then affecting local trade. This led to the founding of a Shekhawati Brigade to suppress robbery and bring security to the local merchants. Peace and prosperity returned, creating ideal conditions for a display of conspicuous wealth. The merchants commissioned fine buildings and, as a final touch, their walls were painted. So a military mission led to an artistic one!

The lip-smacking dishes of the Mudaliars, Vellalas, Naidus, Anglo Indians, Chettiars, and Tamil Muslims have been featured in this book, along with the delicate balance of flavours and communities that constitute the social fabric of the land down under.

Book excerpt: "The share auto I squeeze into next seems unusually vulnerable after a night in the truck - too compact, too low down. Perhaps, these are the usual side effects of prolonged riding with the king of the road, I think to myself. But it is only when I fill in ‘truck’ as my mode of transportation in the hotel ledger at Udaipur does the utter ludicrousness of my endeavour truly hit home" Think truck drivers, and movie scenes of them drunkenly crushing inconvenient people to their gravelly deaths come to mind. But what are their lives on the road actually like? In Truck De India!, journalist Rajat Ubhaykar embarks on a 10,000 km-long, 100% unplanned trip, hitchhiking with truckers all across India. On the way, he makes unexpected friendships; listens to highway ghost stories; discovers the near-fatal consequences of overloading trucks; documents the fascinating tradition of truck art in Punjab; travels alongside nomadic shepherds in Kashmir; encounters endemic corruption repeatedly; survives NH39, the insurgent-ridden highway through Nagaland and Manipur; and is unfailingly greeted by the unconditional kindness of perfect strangers. Imbued with humour, empathy, and a keen sense of history, Truck De India! is a travelogue like no other you've read. It is the story of India, and Indians, on the road.

Book POLITICS GEOPLITICS HB

Download or read book POLITICS GEOPLITICS HB written by Harsh Pant V and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's South Asia policy, by its very nature, has to be extremely dynamic and nimble. The Narendra Modi government has also articulated an ambitious 'Neighbourhood First' approach and has invested significant diplomatic capital in it over the last few years. But the underlying factors that have traditionally framed India's difficulties in getting its neighbourhood policy right remain as potent as ever. Against this backdrop, Politics and Geopolitics brings together some of the finest thinkers in the country to deliberate on the gamut of political, diplomatic and economic issues that India is facing in its neighbourhood beyond Chinese hostilities and the perennial lack of trust with Pakistan. Each chapter provides an overview of the last few years under the Modi government and evaluates the state of the relationship as it exists today, touching upon the main areas of disputes and charting out a way forward for the bilateral engagement. This extremely timely and crucial compilation provides a kaleidoscopic view of India's neighbourhood challenge. Politics and Geopolitics offers a valuable contribution to the fast-growing field of scholarship on South Asia's international relevance and profile, the drivers of national and regional decision-making in each of its countries, their various relationships with China, and the geo-strategic implications thereof. It explores the possibilities for forward bilateral engagement in the strategic neighbourhood with the hindsight of challenges, and suggests workable options for policymakers in what might well turn out to be the defining decade for Indian foreign policy in a re-defined neigh bourhood. This compilation provides a ringside view of India's neighbourhood challenge at a critical juncture when Sino-Indian contestation is sharpening by the day and South Asia is emerging as the central node in the wider Indo-Pacific. As India's ambitions soar on the global stage in accordance with its desire to establish itself as 'leading power' in the international order, getting its neighbourhood right is perhaps more vital than ever.

Book excerpt: Through my work I return to my native roots, my youth, and the transitory world of innocence...The role of memory in art is a recognised fact, but in my case, as a painter living in a foreign city for so many years, my memories are doubly potent in sustaining my creative life." - Sakti Burman Legends, family, and Indian gods meet and mingle in Sakti Burman's private, kaleidoscopic universe. Sakti Burman is one of India's pioneering painters, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata and grew up in what is now Bangladesh. This monograph is the definitive publication illustrating the evolution of Sakti Burman's prolific paintings, drawings, and watercolors, contextualizing his lifelong exploration into alternative ways of seeing. Burman's colorful figures hark back to a kind of ancient "lost paradise," but also sustain a fresh and irrepressible faith in the beauty and sensibilities of Mother Nature alongside a hopeful human spirit.

Book Nepal where the Gods Live

Download or read book Nepal where the Gods Live written by Michèle Béguin and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people Nepal conjures up images of the Himalayas, but Nepal is much more than that. It is the sanctuary of the main Asian religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Shamanism, where most traditions have been left untouched by foreign influences. In fact, the Kathmandu Valley keeps itself alive with the antique traditions of the virginity cult. The living Goddess or the Kumari Devi is the most important character for any traditional Nepalese. She is the Goddess protecting the country and it is only after her benediction that the King of Nepal had the permission to lead the country's affairs for the following year. Nepal is also a sanctuary of nature and races. Its climate, flora and fauna are extremely rich and shelter a number of ethnic groups. These little groups live precariously within harsh natural elements, through heat and cold, subtropical rains and high altitude deserts, and have astonishing communal organisations, which could be considered as a model in our modern society. The arts of Nepal are splendid and in plenty. The country is known of course for its architectural treasures mainly present in the Katmandu valley. The wooden sculptures of their struts are unique in the world as are the excellent golden bronzes admired in the public places and the numerous temples of Buddhist and Hindu religions. The Buddhist Thangka paintings are world famous and the murals of the monasteries and temples evoke envy. Nepal is home to mysterious festivals and many rituals are still practiced with as much faith and belief as they were centuries ago. Festivals to call the rain through Macchendranath, to celebrate the memory of the dead, to thank the God of rains after the season and celebrate the protective Goddess of the nation and later the call of the Goddess of Wealth Laxmi to shower riches on the family. It is endless, there is more than a festival a day. Only the people of each of the different communities are aware of their own fetes. Nepal is a place of rich and multiple activities, full of diversities, a refuge of races and the cultures they elaborate. Contents : 1. Looking Back / 2. Exploring the Land of the Gods / 3. Past Tense in Gods' Country / 4. The Ethnic Mosaic of the Nepalese People / 5. Religions in Ne's Country / 6. The Divinities in All their States: Gods and Goddesses of Nepal / 7.
