Download or read book The Pain Hidden behind My Smile written by KJ Harden and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karla was a misguided youth who witnessed everything that she was supposed to be protected from. Growing up without a father in her life and a mother who didn't know how to show her love forced her to go out into the world unprepared for the realities of it. She became a mother at the age of eighteen by a man who was six years older with children. Although she never felt love at home, she still opened herself up to the possibilities of being loved and loving someone in return. That search led her to a young man whom she eventually spent eight years of her life with and shared two more children together. During their time together she suffered from mental, physical, and emotional abuse, causing her to finally get up enough courage to leave him. Single again, Karla started doing things that she never had the opportunity to do while with such a controlling man. She started to drink and go out more, which eventually caused her to make decisions that affected and disrupted her household. She met a few men and settled down with one that caught her eye. While trying to pick up the pieces of her life, she started doing a little better and was looking forward to her future without the hurt and pain that she suffered through for years. Trying to better her relationship with her siblings, she invited them to her apartment so that they could spend time together, but nothing would prepare herself for what lay ahead. One night with her family had turned her whole world upside down and left her fighting for her freedom. With everything that she had already gone through, nobody would have ever expected for her to end up in jail, not even her. Leaving behind her children, Karla had to adjust to her new life behind bars. There was no turning back now, she had to fight harder than she had ever fought before. During that fight, she was sexually assaulted by a male deputy that worked at the courthouse. Leaving her with distrust for the same people put in place to protect her, she started to give up and accept things as they were, but God didn't want that for her, so He gave her the vision and sign that she had been waiting for. After being away for almost two years, Karla was released back out into the same cold, cruel world that she was abruptly taken from and had to start rebuilding what was torn down. She also needed to repair the broken relationship with her children, but none of that would come easy for her. Battling depression, being homeless, and running into people that had taken advantage of her instead of helping only made her stronger, and after two years of parole Karla packed the few things she had along with her children and headed for a new life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, leaving behind everything that was meant to break her and starting a new life for herself and children.

Book Happiness

  • Author : Daniel Nettle
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2005-05-12
  • ISBN : 0191604747
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Happiness written by Daniel Nettle and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-05-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is happiness? Can we measure it? Why are some people happy and others not? And is there a drug that could eliminate all unhappiness? People all over the world, and throughout the ages, have thought about happiness, argued about its nature, and, most of all, desired it. But why do we have such a strong instinct to pursue happiness? And if happiness is good in itself, why haven't we simply evolved to be happier? Daniel Nettle uses the results of the latest psychological studies to ask what makes people happy and unhappy, what happiness really is, and to examine our urge to achieve it. Along the way we look at brain systems, at mind-altering drugs, and how happiness is now marketed to us as a commodity. Nettle concludes that while it may be unrealistic to expect lasting happiness, our evolved tendency to seek happiness drives us to achieve much that is worthwhile in itself. What is more, it seems to be not your particular circumstances that define whether you are happy so much as your attitude towards life. Happiness gives us the latest scientific insights into the nature of our feelings of well-being, and what these imply for how we might live our lives.

Book Behind a Painted Smile

Download or read book Behind a Painted Smile written by Rosie Shannon and published by . This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chose to write this particular book, mainly to prove something to myself and other people just how a person such as myself can progress in their lives. After surviving both physical and sexual abuse in my past from a family member. Having to live with the turmoil of placing my children in the care of other families. My worst nightmare of which I had to come to terms with, was when my son Daniel was killed in a road traffic accident in 2001. I chose to write all of my thoughts and emotions down, instead of having any kind of councelling. As each day passes by, I know that with my partner who is so understanding, that I can overcome anything that life chooses to throw at me. Although, I do not allow my emotions to be seen, as each day the first thing I do is put my make up on, which is what I would call my "mask".This to me makes life so much easier as nobody has any idea of what I am thinking or feeling. Each day I write on a calender the events of my daily routine. That is how it became to be written in diary form, and then even I could see the progress I had made in my life.Should I ever be concerned about something, or not be too certain of anything, I think of what my late son Daniel would have told me.He would of said "go for it mum".

Book excerpt: To all those who hide their pain behind a smile, may this story help you defeat your demons. A sunny day, a smile full of joy, a melody made of the chirping of birds and the rustling of a river bed. A moonless night, a bed of pain, a dark and silent room that, every night, becomes a deafening melody, a composition of screams, nightmares and demons that tears the soul apart. Three characters so different, but so similar: Cameron, sad eyes and breathtaking smiles, a homosexual boy not at peace with his sexuality because of the ignorance of his family and society; Jocelyn, eyes full of joy and smiles full of pain, an obese girl derided by her peers; finally, Trevis, cold heart and warm eyes, free to be what he wants to be. But do people without fears exist? People without pain in their smiles? The stories of these three characters intersect profoundly until each becomes the salvation of the other. Friendship and love merge so deeply that you can no longer tell the difference. Giuseppe De Martino was born in Naples on 9 July, 1996. He soon discovered a strong passion for acting, writing and singing, quickly becoming a professional in the world of entertainment. After graduating from drama school, he won the 20th edition of the Emily Dickinson International Literary Prize. Book excerpt: In the garden, in the dew of the morning, when my sister and I grew tired of working, we'd lay in the cool, black dirt, our pillows the bellies of stray dogs our Mema had taken in. We'd whisper sweetly to them as they lay there with us, "I love you-you don't hurt, like people do." Butterflies filled the garden. "Mema, look!" I'd shout. "They are coming to me!" "Baby, it's the spirit you carry within you..." She'd respond, "They sense it." I would get caught up in the moment, jump up to fly, imitating the butterflies, wanting them to land on my hand. I can feel that moment now, when time slows down, a moment you will remember forever-watching butterflies' wings flutter in slow motion, vibrant, delicate, with intricate patterned colors, and longing to be like them; to fly with freedom and grace. I watched as they descended down, as if to connect, and in some way say, "Hello." Natalie Parrish's strong connection to her grandma and the wisdom she shared would stay hidden within her a lifetime-through abuse, struggle, hardship, and even a suicide attempt that nearly stole her life. In this book, Natalie recounts her transformation, coming full circle to embrace her true self, and revealing to us all the Girl Behind the Smile. GirlBehindtheSmile.com
