Book excerpt: Harold MacGrath (September 4, 1871 - October 30, 1932) was a bestselling and prolific American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. He sometimes completed more than one novel per year for the mass market, covering romance, spies, mystery, and adventure. He was the first nationally known writer to be commissioned to write original screenplays for the new film industry. In addition, he had eighteen novels and three short stories adapted as films, in some cases more than once. Three of these novels were also adapted as plays that were produced on Broadway in New York City. MacGrath traveled extensively but was always based in Syracuse, New York, where he was born and raised.

Book excerpt: Humdrum isn't where you live; it's what you are. Perhaps you are one of those whose lives are bound by neighbourly interests. Imaginatively, you never seek what lies under a gorgeous sunset; you are never stirred by any longing to investigate the ends of rainbows. You are more concerned by what your neighbour does every day than by what he might do if he were suddenly spun, whirled, jolted out of his poky orbit. The blank door of an empty house never intrigues you; you enter blind alleys without thrilling in the least; you hear a cry in the night and impute it to some marauding tom. Lord, what a life!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Madonna in Legend and History The faith of the earliest Christians, for a generation or two, rested mainly upon tradition - that is, upon what others had seen and heard and told, or only partly written. Even our present written Gos pels were more or less derived from such original sources. St. Paul bids his con verts hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle (2d Thess. Ii. And distinctly quotes (acts xx. 135) a saying by our Lord not noted elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cult of the Black Virgin Paperback

Download or read book Cult of the Black Virgin Paperback written by Ean Begg and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many icons of Mary that show black faces and hands. In France, these are called Vierge Noires-Black Virgins. Elsewhere, may be called Black Madonnas or the "other Mary." Jung called her Isis, while others claim she is the symbolic remains of a prehistoric worship of the Earth Mother. She is generally connected with Cybele, Diana, Isis, and Venus, as well as with Kali, Inanna, and Lilith. Historically she is connected with the Crusades, the Islamic occupation of Spain, the Conquistadors, as well as the Merovingians and Knights Templars, who viewed her as Mary Magdalene. Why are more than five hundred of the world's Madonna images black or dark? Why is so little known about them? Black Virgins-a resurfacing of the powerful pagan goddesses of sexuality, the underworld, and earth wisdom-they are symbols of power and majesty, the other side of the traditional Madonna's virginity or tender maternity. They personify the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant in a quest for lost feminine wisdom and the search for soul. Ean Begg's fascinating book investigates the pagan origins of the phenomenon as well as the heretical Gnostic-Christian underground stream that flowed west with the cult of Mary Magdalene and resurfaced in Catharism at the time of the Crusades, especially with the Templars.

Book Celebrated Sanctuaries of the Madonna Classic Reprint

Download or read book Celebrated Sanctuaries of the Madonna Classic Reprint written by J. Spencer Northcote and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Sanctuaries of the Madonna Early in the fifth century - probably A.D. 404 - the congregation of the faithful in a town on the coast of Africa were much disturbed by the rumour of a scandal in the episcopal palace. The details of the story were imperfectly known, and of course variously told; but the distress of the little flock was so great that at last the Bishop published a Pastoral on the subject. In this Pastoral he lamented that there should be any necessity for an episcopal exhortation on occasions like the present; he urged that the distinct prophecies of our Blessed Lord ought to have prepared men's minds for such exhibitions of human weakness and malice; nevertheless he confessed that they were trials dangerous to the weak, painful to all, and that therefore he would gladly have spared his flock the knowledge of what had happened, if this had been possible. Now, however, that false reports were afloat, it was better that they should know the facts, which were briefly these: - A priest of his household, named Boniface, had brought a grave charge of immorality against another inmate of the house, who was not yet a priest, but desirous of becoming one. The charge was denied, and met by a counter-charge; nevertheless, the Bishop had a strong impression that it was true.
