Book The Pacific Triangle Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pacific Triangle Classic Reprint written by Sydney Greenbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Triangle The plan of the book has been to give the historical approach to the Pacific and its native races; then to take the reader upon a journey of over twenty thousand miles around the Pacific. I hope that he will come away with a clear impression of the immensity of the Ocean, of the diversity of its natural and human elements, and the splendor and picturesqueness of its make-up. Out of this review certain problems emerge, the problems of the relations of native and alien races, of marriages and divorces, of markets and ideals - problems that affect the primitive races in their own new place in the world. But over and above and about these come the issues that involve the more advanced races of Asia, Australasia, and America - where they impinge upon each other and where their interests in these minor races center. This is the logic of the Pacific. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Triangle This book is an attempt to bring within focus the most outstanding factors in the Pacific. With the exception of Chapter II, which deals with the origin of the Polynesian people, there is hardly an incident in the whole book that has not come within the scope of my own personal experience. Hence this is essentially a travel narrative. I have confined myself to the task of interpreting the problems of the Pacific in the light of the episodes of everyday life. Wherever possible, I have tried to let the incident speak for itself, and to include in the picture the average ideals of the various races, together with my own impressions of them and my own reflections. The field is a tremendous one. It encompasses the most important regions that lie along the great avenues of commerce and general intercourse. The Pacific is a great combination of geographical, ethnological, and political factors that is extremely diverse in its sources. I have tried to discern within them a unit of human commonality, as the seeker after truth is bound to do if his discoveries are to be of any value. But the result has been an unconventional book. For I have sometimes been compelled to make unity of time and place subservient to that of subject matter. Hence the reader may on occasion feel that the book returns to the same field more than once. That has been unavoidable. The problems that are found in Hawaii are essentially the same as those in Samoa, though differing in degree. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past, the Present and the Future of the Pacific The Parent Government has been, unfortunately, too Oppressive towards us in its laws and policy, to enable many of us to boast of possessing much of this world's wealth. We have been made, ever since we resided on these Pacific shores, mere hewers of wood and drawers of water to the Government at Washington and our brethren on the Atlantic side of the continent. They have been our Oppressive taskmasters ever since we resided here, and we have served them most faithfully, and we shall never get free from their tyranny and oppression, until we take measures to de fine our position and defend ourselves. This is strong talk, but we mean all we say. Let not the United States Government forget the lesson our ancestors taught Great Britain, when she, in the pride of her power, forced them to define their position and to defend themselves. The result of that contest is now a matter of history, and we are all familiar with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To the Pacific and Back These letters were commenced as we started on our trip across the continent, with no idea of their continuance, but they met with favor at home, and the pleasure of sharing with my children the im pressions stamped upon my own mind by the various scenes that we passed through, and the relief afforded to the monotony of many an other wise weary hour, induced me to persevere. Upon our return we found that all of the little penciled leaves had been kept intact, but were exceedingly inconvenient for ready reference; hence their appearance in this form, supplemented by some of my husband's letters, which fill gaps occurring in my own, portions referring to merely personal matters being omitted. I dedicate this little volume to my children, to whom the letters were originally addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pacific Tales Right in front of the village ran a sweeping curve of yellow beach, with here and there a clump of rocks, whose black, jagged outlines were covered with mantles of creepers and vines green and yellow, in which at night-time the snow-white tropic birds came to roost with clamorous note. Back from the beach stood groves of pandanus and breadfruit and coconuts, whose branches sang merrily all day long to the sweep of the whistling trade wind, but drooped languidly at sunset when it died away. Book The Battle for the Pacific Vol 1

Download or read book The Battle for the Pacific Vol 1 written by Rowan Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle for the Pacific, Vol. 1: And Other Adventures at Sea When we became a great Pacific power, and undertook new responsibilities in acquiring Hawaii and the Philippines, we gained new neighbors. Among them is the gallant nation of Japan, whose bravery in war and mastery Of the arts have caused the whole world to wonder. In the middle Of the nineteenth cen tury our country introduced Japan to the outer world, and the friendship begun then will, we trust, continue always. Some of the story tellers in this book have selected Japan as an antagonist in their imaginative pictures of future wars, and others have chosen England. But the fact that an En'glishmm or Japanese or an American plays a fighting part in a story and comes to grief does not assuredly mean any hostile prediction or expression of ill-will towards his particular country. Quite aside from the dramatic interest of our tales Of great naval encounters, some Of these ingenious stories lead to results which would quickly put an end to war - a result to be earnestly hoped for.
