Book The Pacific Railroads and the Relations Existing Between Them and the Government of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pacific Railroads and the Relations Existing Between Them and the Government of the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Varnum Poor and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Railroads and the Relations Existing Between Them and the Government of the United States Dear Sir: I understand that you have prepared a paper concerning the legal relations of the Union Pacific Railroad Company to the Government under the decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States. Not doubting from your connection with the enterprise in its incipient stages, and from the attention you have given to the subject to the present time, that your paper will be calculated to correct some prevailing misapprehensions, I trust it will find its way to the public. I have had no stock in the Company since my resignation as President ten years ago; nor have I been concerned in any way with its transactions, or any outside movements relating to it. But I regard it as one of the great enterprises of the age, the rapid accomplishment of which caused more astonishment in other countries than anything we have achieved, and as a larger contributor to our growth and prosperity than any one other cause. I do not doubt that it will continue to be so, whatever combinations may be formed by speculators in Wall Street to enhance or depress the market value of its stock. I did not, as you know, approve or assent to the Credit Mobilier contracts, which were made while I was in Europe; but this is a matter entirely apart from the legal relations of the Company to the Government. These should be understood by the whole community - not only for the purpose of removing misconception, by which the public mind is unjustly prejudiced, but to prevent legislative bodies, under the influence of the prevalent and not unnatural jealousy of large corporations, from being misled and hurried into ill-considered and unauthorized enactments. Book excerpt: Celebrating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States , After Promontory: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Transcontinental Railroading profiles the history and heritage of this historic event. Starting with the original Union Pacific—Central Pacific lines that met at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, the book expands the narrative by considering all of the transcontinental routes in the United States and examining their impact on building this great nation. Exquisitely illustrated with full color photographs, After Promontory divides the western United States into three regions—central, southern, and northern—and offers a deep look at the transcontinental routes of each one. Renowned railroad historians Maury Klein, Keith Bryant, and Don Hofsommer offer their perspectives on these regions along with contributors H. Roger Grant and Rob Krebs.

Book excerpt: Landscape architecture and photography are closely interrelated, since the former is a constantly evolving thing that can be captured in stills, even eternalized, by photography. What role does photography play in landscape design? How does photography create a new context for landscape? The book investigates such questions in nine essays by North-American and French scientists, using landscape designs that were created from the 1950s to today.

Book excerpt: After the Civil War, the building of the transcontinental railroad was the nineteenth century's most transformative event. Beginning in 1842 with a visionary's dream to span the continent with twin bands of iron, Empire Express captures three dramatic decades in which the United States effectively doubled in size, fought three wars, and began to discover a new national identity. From self--made entrepreneurs such as the Union Pacific's Thomas Durant and era--defining figures such as President Lincoln to the thousands of laborers whose backbreaking work made the railroad possible, this extraordinary narrative summons an astonishing array of voices to give new dimension not only to this epic endeavor but also to the culture, political struggles, and social conflicts of an unforgettable period in American history.

Book Great Pages in History from the Wisconsin State Journal 1852 2002

Download or read book Great Pages in History from the Wisconsin State Journal 1852 2002 written by Frank Denton and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection reproduces the most important front pages in the history of the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper, from its first publication under that name on September 30, 1852, to the current "War on Terrorism." See what Wisconsinites first read about Abraham Lincoln's election and assassination, Custer's last stand against the Sioux, the first votes by women, Henry Ford's $5 daily wage, the Saint Valentine's Day mob massacre in Chicago, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart as she attempted to fly around the world . . . and the wars, elections, crimes, and social revolutions that have defined the past century and a half. Each front page, reproduced from the original, is readable down to the smallest type. In 2002 the Wisconsin State Journal celebrates its Sesquicentennial, marking one hundred and fifty years of service to the people of Madison and the State of Wisconsin. The newspaper had an earlier inception as the Madison Express in 1839, when Madison was a territorial town on the frontier and statehood was still nine years away. Readers will notice the newspaper's appearance has changed nearly as much as have the methods of gathering the news and producing the paper. But readers' fascination with and hunger for the news of each day remain strong.
