Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, when, and why has the Pacific been a locus for imagining different futures by those living there as well as passing through? What does that tell us about the distinctiveness or otherwise of this “sea of islands”? Foregrounding the work of leading and emerging scholars of Oceania, Pacific Futures brings together a diverse set of approaches to, and examples of, how futures are being conceived in the region and have been imagined in the past. Individual chapters engage the various and sometimes contested futures yearned for, unrealized, and even lost or forgotten, that are particular to the Pacific as a region, ocean, island network, destination, and home. Contributors recuperate the futures hoped for and dreamed up by a vast array of islanders and outlanders—from Indigenous federalists to Lutheran improvers to Cantonese small business owners—making these histories of the future visible. In so doing, the collection intervenes in debates about globalization in the Pacific—and how the region is acted on by outside forces—and postcolonial debates that emphasize the agency and resistance of Pacific peoples in the context of centuries of colonial endeavor. With a view to the effects of the “slow violence” of climate change, the volume also challenges scholars to think about the conditions of possibility for future-thinking at all in the midst of a global crisis that promises cataclysmic effects for the region. Pacific Futures highlights futures conceived in the context of a modernity coproduced by diverse Pacific peoples, taking resistance to categorization as a starting point rather than a conclusion. With its hospitable approach to thinking about history making and future thinking, one that is open to a wide range of methodological, epistemological, and political interests and commitments, the volume will encourage the writing of new histories of the Pacific and new ways of talking about history in this field, the region, and beyond.

Book The Pacific Its Past and Future

Download or read book The Pacific Its Past and Future written by Guy Hardy Scholefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific, Its Past and Future: And the Policy of the Great Powers From the Eighteenth Century This volume was intended to be a short history of British policy in the Pacific, a policy which has been very little understood and very much misunderstood. But British policy is so much interwoven with that of the other great powers that the scope of the book was necessarily widened to embrace the whole subject. That the atmosphere of a great war is not the best for the historical treatment of questions in which more than one of the belligerents is involved, is evident from the common disposition on the part of recent writers to interpret the past policy of Germany in the light of what she has done since. It must be confessed, however, that German diplomacy in 1884 and in 1914 exhibits the same general character. Another temptation which the author has endeavoured to resist is that of digressing into certain of the more interesting aspects of the subject in greater detail than the limits of the volume 'will permit. He can only hope that such engrossing economic problems as Asiatic emigration and the relationship of the two Far Eastern powers with Europe will be treated historically by some future student. Download or read book The Past the Present and the Future of the Pacific Classic Reprint written by James M. Crane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past, the Present and the Future of the Pacific The Parent Government has been, unfortunately, too Oppressive towards us in its laws and policy, to enable many of us to boast of possessing much of this world's wealth. We have been made, ever since we resided on these Pacific shores, mere hewers of wood and drawers of water to the Government at Washington and our brethren on the Atlantic side of the continent. They have been our Oppressive taskmasters ever since we resided here, and we have served them most faithfully, and we shall never get free from their tyranny and oppression, until we take measures to de fine our position and defend ourselves. This is strong talk, but we mean all we say. Let not the United States Government forget the lesson our ancestors taught Great Britain, when she, in the pride of her power, forced them to define their position and to defend themselves. The result of that contest is now a matter of history, and we are all familiar with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Contest for the Indo Pacific

Download or read book Contest for the Indo Pacific written by Rory Medcalf and published by La Trobe University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the world's most contested region Updated edition covering the strategic impacts of Covid-19, China's economic coercion against Australia, the Afghanistan withdrawal, Joe Biden, the Quad and US-China rivalry. The Indo-Pacific is both a place and an idea. It is the region central to global prosperity and security. It is also a metaphor for collective action. If diplomacy fails, it will be the theatre of the first general war since 1945. But if its future can be secured, the Indo-Pacific will flourish as a shared space, the centre of gravity in a connected world. What we call different parts of the world - Asia, Europe, the Middle East - seems innocuous. But the name of a region is totemic- a mental map that guides the decisions of leaders and the story of international order, war and peace. In recent years, the label 'Indo-Pacific' has gained wide use, including among the leaders of the United States, India, Japan, Australia, Indonesia and France. But what does it really mean? Written by a recognised expert and regional policy insider, Contest for the Indo-Pacific is the definitive guide to tensions in the region. It deftly weaves together history, geopolitics, cartography, military strategy, economics, games and propaganda to address a vital question- how can China's dominance be prevented without war? 'The complexities of our region can easily bewilder those used to the Manichaean simplicity of the Cold War. Rory Medcalf's book is an elegant, keenly insightful tour of the Indo-Pacific's strategic horizon.' -Malcolm Turnbull
