The debate proceeded during three days, and I diligently applied myself to gathering the opinion of the public about the two opposing statesmen. I was most desirous to obtain the views of educated men on their principles and character. As far as I could ascertain, I was informed--That DISBAELI and Gnsnsrons were both fond of oflice. That they neither of them had any desire for it; but That the one did not like the other to have it. That the Government had a large majority. That Gnsnsroma could turn them out when he pleased.. That Gnansromz was ready to sacrifice all his principles to come in with a Cabinet. 7. That Dlsnaau, having no principles, was waiting to see to what he had better attach himself. All this puzzled me so much that I refrained from sending to you any conclusion as to the state of affairs. When it appeared that all my friends were equally well informed with each other, and got their information in the same way, it was impossible to reconcile the opposing statements. Events progressed, and the time arrived when a more decided vote than any previous onet hrew us into a greater muddle than we had been in before. This was now a busy time for me. My friends were all authentic; they all had got their information from sources which were infallible. "I might be certain that adissolution was settled on by the PRIME Mmisrns," said my friend, "and he would be supported by a new Parliament." This was quite private, and not to be published. GREY assures me that there will be no dissolution, but that a vote of want of confidence in the Ministry will be passed. But the worst of the whole thing is the fact that amongst these idiots may be included the wisest, best, and most beautiful of the human species. It was said that you could not please Madame De S'rAieL so much as by telling her she was beautiful, or win your way to the heart of Madame R:: AM1eR by any other method so simple as that of extolling her talents. In like manner you may achieve an ascendency over a civil engineer by flattering the brilliancy of his manners, and over a man of the world by referring to the profundity of his scientific views. Mr. GLADSTONE cares very little for his reputation as a Statesman so long as he is complimented for his skill on the violin, and Mr. COURTLY achieved a prominent place among Indian administrators by proclaiming the V101zaor to be a firstrate shot, which he was not. PAGANINI was proud, not of his fiddle-playing, but of his dancing: the late Sir vILLIA.i FoLns'npiqued himself, not on his law, but on his knowledge of military strategies; and Mr. BRIGHT thinks nothing of his oratory in comparison with his skill in gafling a salmon. I once knew a lady--H1: AvF.N help me how ugly she was She imagined all the world in love with her, and, in her compulsory innocency, laboured to destroy her own reputation. In vain did we express our firm belief in the purity of her morals. W e were met by angry rejoinders and protestations of the most outrageous principles. This is one chamber of the Paradise of Fools. Book The Dawn of the Cheap Press in Victorian Britain

Download or read book The Dawn of the Cheap Press in Victorian Britain written by Martin Hewitt and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dawn of the Cheap Press provides the first detailed study of the mid-Victorian campaign for the repeal of the taxes on knowledge for over a hundred years. Using the recently discovered papers of the Association for the Promotion of the Repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge and taking advantage of new forms of research made possible by the digitisation of nineteenth century newspapers, it assesses the impact of the removal of the last surviving legal disabilities on the newspaper industry, the nature of journalism, and the cultures and practices of newspaper reading. The book demonstrates that the campaign against the taxes on knowledge retained broad popular appeal, and played an important role in the politics of mid-Victorian budgets. It not only makes a seminal contribution to the history of the nineteenth century press and print culture, but also illuminates the culture and politics of mid-Victorian Britain, offers an important re-reading of the history of extra-parliamentary pressure group politics and provides new insights into the origins of Gladstonian Liberalism.
