Book excerpt: A stunning and unique collection of satellite images of Earth that offer an unexpected look at humanity, derived from the wildly popular Daily Overview Instagram project. Inspired by the “Overview Effect”—a sensation that astronauts experience when given the opportunity to look down and view the Earth as a whole—the breathtaking, high definition satellite photographs in OVERVIEW offer a new way to look at the landscape that we have shaped. More than 200 images of industry, agriculture, architecture, and nature highlight incredible patterns while also revealing a deeper story about human impact. This extraordinary photographic journey around our planet captures the sense of wonder gained from a new, aerial vantage point and creates a perspective of Earth as it has never been seen before.

Book The Cosma Hypothesis Implications of the Overview Effect

Download or read book The Cosma Hypothesis Implications of the Overview Effect written by Frank White and published by Hybrid Global Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect By Frank White In 1986, Frank White was working on his groundbreaking book, The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution, when he heard the late Tom Wolfe, author of The Right Stuff , say, “The country has never had a philosophy of space exploration.” This began a continuing quest to develop a deep understanding of why (and how) humans should explore the universe. The Cosma Hypothesis represents the culmination of White’s effort to develop a space philosophy. Following the pattern set in The Overview Effect, the book draws on interviews with astronauts about the ways in which spaceflight shifted their understanding of our relationship with the universe. The Cosma Hypothesis suggests that our purpose in exploring space should transcend focusing on how it will benefit humanity. We should ask how to create a symbiotic relationship with the universe, giving back as much as we take, and spreading life, intelligence, and self-awareness throughout the solar system and beyond. In The Cosma Hypothesis, White argues that developing a philosophy of space exploration and settlement is more than an intellectual exercise: it will powerfully influence policy and practices that are unfolding now, as governments and corporations talk about space tourism, asteroid mining, and cities on Mars. The Cosma Hypothesis is White’s contribution to a dialogue that will, it is hoped, become global in scope.

Book An Overview of the Pre suppression Society of Jesus in Spain

Download or read book An Overview of the Pre suppression Society of Jesus in Spain written by Patricia W. Manning and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In An Overview of the Pre-suppression Society of Jesus in Spain, Patricia W. Manning offers a survey of the Society of Jesus in Spain from its origins in Ignatius of Loyola’s early preaching to the aftereffects of its expulsion. Rather than nurture the nascent order, Loyola’s homeland was often ambivalent. His pre-Jesuit freelance sermonizing prompted investigations. The young Society confronted indifference and interference from the Spanish monarchy and outright opposition from other religious orders. This essay outlines the order’s ministerial and pedagogical activities, its relationship with women and with royal institutions, including the Spanish Inquisition, and Spanish members’ roles in theological debates concerning casuistry, free will, and the immaculate conception. It also considers the impact of Jesuits’ non-religious writings.

Book An Overview of the Labor Market Problems of Indians and Native Americans

Download or read book An Overview of the Labor Market Problems of Indians and Native Americans written by Robert G. Ainsworth and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet provides an overview of the labor market problems facing Indians and Native Americans, the most economically disadvantaged ethnic group in the United States. It summarizes Indian policy, particularly major policies and laws that relate to early trade restrictions and the exploitation of Indians through trade; their forced removal from their land; establishment of the reservation system, land allotments, and assimilation; termination and relocation policy; and the more recent policies of self-determination. Discussion considers Indian population and labor force estimates and examines barriers to Indian employment. Lack of jobs on or near reservations is the greatest problem, but poor education and training, inadequate English language capability, tribal ties to the reservation, a culture that is not job-oriented, and poor housing and health conditions, and inadequate transportation are also cited. There are many federal programs for Indians, ranging from housing assistance, to health and transportation services, to education and training for jobs. A number of these programs are listed. But the report suggests that a high degree of overlap and fragmentation of federal programs hampers their effectiveness among Indians. Coordination of federal programs and further federal research, especially on effectiveness of JTPA programs, are recommended. This report contains 25 references. (DHP).
