Book Economists Papers 1750 1950

Download or read book Economists Papers 1750 1950 written by Rodney Paul Sturges and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this volume is to provide scholars undertaking research in the history of British economic thought with a systematic listing of the available sources of manuscript material. It is the first work of its kind, and is based on extensive search inquiry into the scattered public and private sources of personal papers and correspondence of British economists. Over one hundred and fifty listings are printed here. They include numerous lesser figures as well as the most distinguished contributors to the varied literature of economics in the period since 1700. The Guide should, therefore, be of interest not only to specialist historians of economics but also to those concerned with the wider role of economic ideas in political debate and the formation of public opinion.

Book From Malaise to Meltdown

Download or read book From Malaise to Meltdown written by Michael Lee and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past two centuries, the great power sitting atop the international global financial system has enjoyed outsized rewards. As the saying goes, however, all good things come to an end. Providing insights into the evolution of the global political economy, From Malaise to Meltdown identifies the main instigators behind the global financial crises we’ve seen in the last two hundred years. Michael Lee shows that, in time, power diffuses from the leading economy to others, creating an intensely competitive push for global financial leadership. Hungry for the benefits of global leadership, declining leaders and aspiring challengers alike roll back long-standing regulatory safeguards in an effort to spark growth. Risks to global financial stability mount as a result of this rollback and waves of severe financial crises soon follow. As Lee deftly shows, the Long Depression of 1873–1896, the Great Depression of 1929–1939, and the financial crisis of 2008 are part of the same recurrent pattern: global competition disrupts the longstanding political equilibria, prompting a search for new, risky ideas among the most powerful states. From Malaise to Meltdown presents a sweeping but accessible historical narrative about the coevolution of power, ideas, and domestic politics, supported by archival research into the risky decisions that ushered in the worst financial crises in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lavishly illustrated publication, Mike Weaver discusses the work of Julia Margaret Cameron, an English photographer known for her painterly approach to her subjects. Weaver’s essay analyzes Mrs. Cameron’s approach to photography as evidenced in the Overstone Album, a collection of 109 of her albumen prints. These prints, which were made between January 1864 and July 1865, were divided into three categories—“Portraits,” “Madonna Groups,” and “Fancy Subjects for Pictorial Effect”—with annotations by Mrs. Cameron about the images and where they were made. Weaver provides invaluable insight into Mrs. Cameron’s life and art and identifies her many sources and concerns, both secular and religious. The Museum’s Department of Photographs displays selections from its collections on a rotating basis.

Book Free Trade and Liberal England 1846 1946

Download or read book Free Trade and Liberal England 1846 1946 written by Anthony Howe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argument about the limits of Free Trade or Protectionism rages throughout the world to this day. Following the Repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, free trade became one of the most distinctive defining features of the British state, and of British economic, social, and political life. Whilethe United States, much of the British Empire, and the leading European Powers turned towards protectionism before 1914, Britain alone held to a policy which had seemingly guaranteed power and prosperity. This book seeks to explain the political history of this tenacious loyalty. While the TariffReform opponents of free trade have been much studied, this is the first substantial account, based on a wide range of printed and archival sources, which explains the primacy of free trade in nineteenth- and early-twentieth century Britain. It also shows that by the centenary of the Repeal of theCorn Laws in 1946, although British free traders lamented the death of Liberal England, they heralded, under American leadership, the rebirth of the liberal international order.
