Book The Big Conspiracy

Download or read book The Big Conspiracy written by Folasade Odutola and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation safety is of global concern. This book is about one person's experience as a non-hypocritical safety regulator in a challenging environment. The author has found her amazing career experience interesting to share. The hazards of playing politics and being hypocritical with safety regulation are clearly reflected in this book. From the human angle, it shows the ugly face of office politics and power play and their detrimental effects on those at the receiving end. The rather slow pace of progress in the aviation regulatory entity since the author's ordeal and her subsequent forceful retirement is a lesson in why responsible authorities shouldn't be cutting their noses to spite their faces.

Book excerpt: Both his family and his city are crumbling when thirteen-year-old Griffin Watts stumbles headlong into his estranged father’s illicit architectural salvage business in 1970s Manhattan. Griffin clambers up the façades of tenements and skyscrapers to steal their nineteenth-century architectural sculptures—gargoyles and sea monsters, goddesses and kings. As his father sees it, these evocative creatures, crafted by immigrant artisans, are an endangered species in an age of sweeping urban renewal. Desperate for money to help his artist mother keep their home, and yearning to connect with his father, Griffin fails to see that his father’s deepening obsession with preserving the treasures of Gilded Age New York endangers them all. As he struggles to hold his family together and build a first love with his girlfriend on a sturdier foundation than his parents’ marriage, Griffin must learn to develop himself into the man he wants to become, and discern which parts of his life may be salvaged—and which parts must be let go. Hilarious and poignant, this critically acclaimed debut is both a vivid love letter to a vanishing city and an intimate portrait of father and son. And it solves the mystery of a stunningly brazen architectural heist—the theft of an entire landmark building—that made the front page of The New York Times in 1974. With writing both tender and powerful, The Gargoyle Hunters brings a remarkable new voice to the canon of New York fiction.

Book We re All Infected

Download or read book We re All Infected written by Dawn Keetley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together an introduction and 13 original scholarly essays on AMC's The Walking Dead. The essays in the first section address the pervasive bloodletting of the series: What are the consequences of the series' unremitting violence? Essays explore violence committed in self-defense, racist violence, mass lawlessness, the violence of law enforcement, the violence of mourning, and the violence of history. The essays in the second section explore an equally urgent question: What does it mean to be human? Several argue that notions of the human must acknowledge the centrality of the body--the fact that we share a "blind corporeality" with the zombie. Others address how the human is closely aligned with language and time, the disappearance of which are represented by the aphasic, timeless zombie. Underlying each essay are the game-changing words of The Walking Dead's protagonist Rick Grimes to the other survivors: "We're all infected." The violence of the zombie is also our violence; their blind drives are also ours. The human characters of The Walking Dead may try to define themselves against the zombies but in the end their bodies harbor the zombie virus: they are the walking dead. Book excerpt: Two elderly friends take a weekend camping trip to the panhandle of Oklahoma just to escape the everyday drudgery and boredom of their work. Stopping for breakfast in a small town in Northwest Oklahoma, they encounter a town bully that threatens them. After the confrontation, they leave the cafe and try to regain their energy and excitement for the trip and not let this local bulldog of a person dampen their weekend they have planned for so long. After driving for another two hours, they arrive at their destination that is isolated from the rest of the world, and they will be the only two camping in this area. While camping and enjoying themselves, they hear vehicles speeding toward them. Faintly, they can hear a siren. Running for cover, they hide in a deep gully covered with trees near the roadway. As the cars speed by, two large suitcases are thrown from the front car with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol in pursuit not far behind. After the cars are out of sight, they retrieve both suitcases and open each one to discover a large sum of money and drugs. Now the adventure starts as they plan to keep the money, but the drug cartel has other plans. The weekend turns into a week while trying to elude professional killers and a local town bully. It seems necessary to move farther away from home and deeper into the panhandle to keep their families safe from the drug lords and town bully. Under extreme duress and fear for their lives, they slip into survival mode. Immersed deep in the dirty business of drugs, they encounter some very cruel and deadly people. Each turn they make could cost their lives. Along the way, they also meet some good people that are willing to help them even at the risk of being killed themselves. This risky venture takes them into the panhandle of Oklahoma, the panhandle of Texas, and the northeast part of New Mexico.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canonical shape of the Hebrew Bible reveals the footprints of the communities of faith that formed that literature. Book Homeward Bound

Download or read book Homeward Bound written by Peter Ames Carlin and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the life of beloved American music icon, Paul Simon, by the bestselling rock biographer Peter Ames Carlin To have been alive during the last sixty years is to have lived with the music of Paul Simon. The boy from Queens scored his first hit record in 1957, just months after Elvis Presley ignited the rock era. As the songwriting half of Simon & Garfunkel, his work helped define the youth movement of the '60s. On his own in the '70s, Simon made radio-dominating hits. He kicked off the '80s by reuniting with Garfunkel to perform for half a million New Yorkers in Central Park. Five years later, Simon’s album “Graceland” sold millions and spurred an international political controversy. And it doesn’t stop there. The grandchild of Jewish emigrants from Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian empire, the 75-year-old singer-songwriter has not only sold more than 100 million records, won 15 Grammy awards and been installed into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice, but has also animated the meaning—and flexibility—of personal and cultural identity in a rapidly shrinking world. Simon has also lived one of the most vibrant lives of modern times; a story replete with tales of Carrie Fisher, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Shelley Duvall, Nelson Mandela, drugs, depression, marriage, divorce, and more. A life story with the scope and power of an epic novel, Carlin’s Homeward Bound is the first major biography of one of the most influential popular artists in American history.
