Book The Overeducated Worker

Download or read book The Overeducated Worker written by L. Borghans and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists and social scientists consider the two views of people working at jobs that do not require as much educations they have. One faction contends that the practice wastes skills and worsens the labor market position of less educated workers. The other faction emphasizes the importance of knowledge as a means of increasing international competitiveness. Among the topics are whether the Finnish labor market has bumped the least educated, over-education and crowding out low-skilled workers, an empirical test of the effect of bumping down on wages, whether more high-skilled workers occupy simple jobs during bad times, and job competition in the Dutch labor market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Overeducation is one of the most important mechanisms for labor market adjustment when there is an excess supply of high-skilled workers. However, there is much debate about the consequences of this phenomena and the short and long term effects for both the overeducated worker and the economy as a whole. This book contributes to our understanding of recent developments in the research on overeducation by providing a detailed overview of the pertinent theoretical and policy issues."

Book Overeducated Workers as an Insurance Device

Download or read book Overeducated Workers as an Insurance Device written by Guido Bulmahn and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical findings show that firms frequently employ overeducated workers. Since overeducated workers earn more than adequately educated ones working in similar jobs these findings seem to be puzzling. In this paper, we introduce an insurance approach to explain the employment of overeducated workers. Referring to this approach, overeducated workers are employed by a firm to avoid high losses in the case of a crisis (e.g. when the production process breaks down). Contrary to adequately educated workers, overeducated ones may be helpful in this situation by quickly offering improvisatorial solutions. First, we use a simple model to demonstrate the insurance argument. Second, we test the major implication of the model empirically by using industry panel data: if and only if high-skilled workers are employed for insurance purposes, the average wage of high-skilled workers in firms that need insurance will be lower compared with firms that do not need insurance. The data confirm this theoretical result.

Book Data Analytics Applications in Education

Download or read book Data Analytics Applications in Education written by Jan Vanthienen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of data and the rise of new quantitative and statistical techniques have created a promising area: data analytics. This combination of a culture of data-driven decision making and techniques to include domain knowledge allows organizations to exploit big data analytics in their evaluation and decision processes. Also, in education and learning, big data analytics is being used to enhance the learning process, to evaluate efficiency, to improve feedback, and to enrich the learning experience. As every step a student takes in the online world can be traced, analyzed, and used, there are plenty of opportunities to improve the learning process of students. First, data analytics techniques can be used to enhance the student’ s learning process by providing real-time feedback, or by enriching the learning experience. Second, data analytics can be used to support the instructor or teacher. Using data analytics, the instructor can better trace, and take targeted actions to improve, the learning process of the student. Third, there are possibilities in using data analytics to measure the performance of instructors. Finally, for policy makers, it is often unclear how schools use their available resources to "produce" outcomes. By combining structured and unstructured data from various sources, data analytics might provide a solution for governments that aim to monitor the performance of schools more closely. Data analytics in education should not be the domain of a single discipline. Economists should discuss the possibilities, issues, and normative questions with a multidisciplinary team of pedagogists, philosophers, computer scientists, and sociologists. By bringing together various disciplines, a more comprehensive answer can be formulated to the challenges ahead. This book starts this discussion by highlighting some economic perspectives on the use of data analytics in education. The book begins a rich, multidisciplinary discussion that may make data analytics in education seem as natural as a teacher in front of a classroom.

Book Agent Based Modelling of Social Networks in Labour Education Market System

Download or read book Agent Based Modelling of Social Networks in Labour Education Market System written by Alexander Tarvid and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the modelling of human behaviour in the education and labour markets, which due to their interdependency are viewed as one system. Important factors influencing the decision-making of individuals and firms in this system are discussed. The role of social environment and networks is stressed. The approach of agent-based modelling is presented and compared with standard economic modelling and other simulation techniques in the context of modelling complex adaptive systems. Practical questions in building agent-based models of labour–education market system with social networks are discussed. These questions include modelling the structure of education system and agent behaviour there; modelling and calibrating the labour market without and with firms; generating the social network, defining its behaviour and calibrating it; and embedding the resulting system into a larger model.
