Book The Outsiders

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ann M. Ciasullo
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-02-17
  • ISBN : 1000861899
  • Pages : 89 pages

Download or read book The Outsiders written by Ann M. Ciasullo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces the unique trajectory of The Outsiders, from beloved book to beloved movie. Based on S.E. Hinton’s landmark novel, Coppola’s film adaptation tells the story of the Greasers, a gang of working-class boys yearning for security, love, and acceptance in a world ruled by their rival gang, the rich Socs. The Outsiders: Adolescent Tenderness and Staying Gold explores the cultural impact of Hinton’s book, the process by which Coppola made the film, the film’s melodramatic components, the marketing of the movie to a young female audience, and the nostalgia industry that has emerged around it in recent decades, thereby illuminating how The Outsiders stands apart from other teen films of the 1980s. In its depiction of the emotional rather than sexual lives of young men on film and its recognition of the desires of teen girls as an audience, The Outsiders distinguishes itself from the standard teen fare of the era. With seriousness and sincerity, Coppola’s film captures the essence of the oft-repeated, timeless message of the story: ‘Stay gold.’ This volume engages with a wide range of disciplinary approaches—film studies, gender studies, and literary and cultural studies—in order to distinguish The Outsiders as the significant contribution to youth culture that it was in the early 1980s and continues to be in the twenty-first century. The book fills a gap in existing scholarship on youth culture and is ideal for scholars, students, and teachers in youth cultures, young adult literature, film studies, cultural studies, and gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the study of history has become a central area of inquiry within anthropology. While classical anthropology focused on the present, current approaches seek to "do history" by using a variety of conceptual and methodological approaches. Approaching the Past is a highly provocative and original volume that examines the issues, themes, and difficulties emerging out of the new anthropological concern with history. Anchoring the discussion with a wide range of ethnographic case studies from Ireland, the contributors to this volume establish a sophisticated interdisciplinary dialogue and assess the degree to which anthropological concepts and methodologies can be applied to historical inquiry. With a variety of essays representing sociological, geograhical, and historical perspectives, Approaching the Past is an invaluable contribution to a discipline that is expanding and reconstituting itself anew.

Book Outsider Designations and Boundary Construction in the New Testament

Download or read book Outsider Designations and Boundary Construction in the New Testament written by Paul Raymond Trebilco and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What terms did early Christians use for outsiders? How did they refer to non-members? In this book-length investigation of these questions, Paul Trebilco explores the outsider designations that the early Christians used in the New Testament. He examines a range of terms, including unbelievers, 'outsiders', sinners, Gentiles, Jews, among others. Drawing on insights from social identity theory, sociolinguistics, and the sociology of deviance, he investigates the usage and development of these terms across the New Testament, and also examines how these outsider designations function in boundary construction across several texts. Trebilco's analysis leads to new conclusions about the identity and character of the early Christian movement, the range of relations between early Christians and outsiders, and the theology of particular New Testament authors.

Book Water and Power in Highland Peru

Download or read book Water and Power in Highland Peru written by Paul H. Gelles and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cabanaconde, a town of 5,000 people, is located in the arid Andean highlands. It is dominated by the foreboding Hualca Hualca mountain peak that is the source of this town's much-needed water. How the villagers obtain this water, Paul Gelles writes, is not a simple process: the politics of irrigation in this area reflect a struggle for control of vital resources, deeply rooted in the clash between local, ritualized models of water distribution and the secular model put forth by the Peruvian state. Water and Power in Highland Peru provides an insightful case study on the intense conflicts over water rights, and a framework for studying ethnic conflict and the effects of "development," not only in Peru, but in other areas as well. Most of the inhabitants of Cabanaconde do not identify themselves with the dominant Spanish-speaking culture found in Peru. And the Peruvian state, grounded in a racist, post-Colonial ethos, challenges the village's long-standing, non-Western framework for organizing water management. Gelles demonstrates that Andean culture is dynamic and adaptive, and it is a powerful source of ethnic identity, even for those who leave the village to live elsewhere. Indigenous rituals developed in this part of the world, he states, have become powerful tools of resistance against interference by local elites and the present-day Peruvian state. Most importantly, the micropolitics of Cabanaconde provide a window into a struggle that is taking place around the world.

Book Brave Punk World

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Greene
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2017-10-06
  • ISBN : 1442269855
  • Pages : 427 pages

Download or read book Brave Punk World written by James Greene and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punk rock may have started in the United Kingdom and United States but it certainly didn’t stay in either country. The genre flew around the globe like a contagion, touching off simultaneous movements in nearly every market imaginable: Japan, Yugoslavia, the Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand, Chile, Mexico, Poland, Burma, Singapore, and Turkey, among countless others. Performing punk rock in many of these places wasn’t just rebellious, it was legitimately dangerous, thanks to regimes far more oppressive and brutal than what existed in the West. Brave Punk World immerses readers in these foreign scenes, describing the lifestyles and art of passionate, hard-charging groups who remain secret to the punk majority but who are just as crucial as the Ramones or the Sex Pistols. James Greene, Jr. explores Brazilian bands like Ulster who angrily protested and openly mocked their region's cruel dictatorship, Germans such as Slime who see many of their songs still banned to this day, the Algerian-by-way-of-France performers Carte de Séjour who had an alleged hand in inspiring the landmark Clash hit "Rock The Casbah," and a galaxy of other punk groups from more exotic locales. Punk diehards and travel enthusiasts with a taste for chaos will enjoy the country-by-country cultural explorations and wild stories offered within these pages.
