Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outbreak of Rebellion Upon urgent and repeated request from the publishers, the author consented to lay aside temporarily a larger and more important literary task, to write for them this initial volume of the "Campaigns of the Civil War." Personal observation and long previous investigation had furnished him a great variety of new material for the work; and this was opportunely supplemented by the recent publication of the Official War Records for 1861, both Union and Confederate, opening to comparison and use an immense mass of historical data, and furnishing the definite means of verifying or correcting the statements of previous writers. Under these advantages the author has written the present volume, basing his work on materials of unquestioned authenticity - books, documents, and manuscripts - and, indeed, for the greater part, on official public records. His effort has been a conscientious and painstaking one, making historical accuracy his constant aim. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Report on the Outbreak of the Rebellion and the Policy of the Government With Regard to Its Suppression

Download or read book Report on the Outbreak of the Rebellion and the Policy of the Government With Regard to Its Suppression written by Leo Fouché and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Outbreak of the Rebellion and the Policy of the Government With Regard to Its Suppression: Presented to Both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty, April, 1915 The latter section confines itself exclusively to the efforts of the Government to restore peace without bloodshed, and subsequently to induce the rebels in the field to surrender without further bloodshed. N O attempt is made to describe the military measures by means Of which the rebellion was ultimately brought to an end. The first section, in which the outbreak of the rebellion is sketched, had to be compiled under difficulties. A mass of material in the hands of the Government could not be used, as it forms important evidence in the cases of individuals on trial or awaiting trial In the case of certain German agents, investigations are still being pursued, and it would be premature to disclose the information so far collected. On certain points, again, the available evidence had not yet been properly sifted at the time of writing. It is therefore possible that the narrative may require subsequent amplification as to details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641

Download or read book Outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641 written by M. Perceval-Maxwell and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-03-31 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceval-Maxwell gives considerable attention to the structure of the Irish parliament in 1640 and 1641 and the decisions made by that body in both the Commons and the Lords. He argues that initially there was a broad consensus between Protestant and Catholic members of parliament on the way Ireland should be governed and on constitutional matters relating to the three kingdoms, but that this consensus was not shared by those who controlled the Irish council. He places particular emphasis on negotiations between members of the Irish parliament who were sent to England and the English council, and on the way events in Ireland influenced both English and Scottish opinion. In this context, the army raised in Ireland to counter the Scottish covenanters, and the failure to ship this army abroad before the rebellion broke out, were of crucial importance. Perceval-Maxwell contends, contrary to the opinion of other historians, that Charles I was not primarily responsible for this failure and was not plotting to use this army against the English parliament. The author explains the plotting that actually took place and provides an account of the initial months of the rebellion as it spread from county to county. In conclusion he reveals how the rebellion was perceived in England and Scotland and how these perceptions contributed to the outbreak of civil war in England. Why the Irish rebellion was important outside of its Irish context is well known but this book is the first to deal with how it became significant. It will be of particular interest to British as well as Irish historians.
