"For God so loved the world . . . "

Many of us could finish that sentence in our sleep. John 3:16 is a beautiful Scripture that neatly and simply sums up the message of the Gospel. But what do all the other 3:16s in the Bible have to tell us?

The words of the Bible weave a tapestry of love, particularly the love that our Heavenly Father has for His children. But a love so deep and so wide cannot be contained in one memorized phrase. It takes multiple authors of sixty-six individual books to begin to explore the mystery of God's care for us.

The Other Three Sixteens by Malinda Fugate examines each third chapter and sixteenth verse in the Bible and invites a fresh, new perspective to help readers uncover surprises or remind them of forgotten truths of a faith that has become routine.

Through Genesis to Revelation, we can soak in its depth, wonder at its intricacies, and be moved at how much the Lord truly does lavish upon us. Together, we discover God's love under the weight of Eve's sin in the garden. It's there in front of Moses, burning in a bush that is somehow not consumed. God's love sits in the dark with Job, rebuilds a wall with Nehemiah, and encourages a young pastor named Timothy. Together we will find a deeper understanding of the way our Heavenly Father cares for each of us today.

Discussion questions suitable for individual or group use included.

Book excerpt: For all of us who has ever wondered or are currently wondering if God is real or if God speaks to us, my hope is that this book will enlighten and encourage each of us to seek God for ourselves. I believe he is real because he has revealed himself to me many times. He is subtle on one hand, but can take your breath away on the other. He sometimes seems to hide, and sometimes seems to show up when unexpected. How do we get to know someone who seems to be so random? Maybe he is not the random one at all.

Book Bloody Sixteen

  • Author : Peter Fey
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2018-05-01
  • ISBN : 1640120092
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Bloody Sixteen written by Peter Fey and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategy and reality collide in Peter Fey’s gripping history of aircraft carrier USS Oriskany’s three deployments to Vietnam with Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16). Its tours coincided with the most dangerous phases of Operation Rolling Thunder, the ill-fated bombing campaign against North Vietnam, and accounted for a quarter of all the naval aircraft lost during Rolling Thunder—the highest loss rate of any carrier air wing during Vietnam. The Johnson administration’s policy of gradually applied force meant that Oriskany arrived on station just as previous restrictions were lifted and bombing raids increased. As a result CVW-16 pilots paid a heavy price as they ventured into areas previously designated “off limits” by Washington DC. Named after one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War, the Oriskany lived up to its name. After two years of suffering heavy losses, the ship caught fire—a devastating blow given the limited number of carriers deployed. With only three months allotted for repairs, Oriskany deployed a third and final time and ultimately lost more than half of its aircraft and more than a third of its pilots. The valor and battle accomplishments displayed by Oriskany’s aviators are legendary, but the story of their service has been lost in the disastrous fray of the war itself. Fey portrays the Oriskany and its heroes in an indelible memorial to the fallen of CVW-16 in hopes that the lessons learned from such strategic disasters are not forgotten in today’s sphere of war-bent politics.

Book The Sixteen The Sensational Story of Britain s Top Secret Military Assassination Squad

Download or read book The Sixteen The Sensational Story of Britain s Top Secret Military Assassination Squad written by John Urwin and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'WE'VE GONE TO A LOT OF TROUBLE TO GET YOU HERE. THERE IS ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING THAT YOU MUST UNDERSTAND: NOTHING OF WHAT YOU SEE OR HEAR CAN EVER BE REPEATED. OFFICIALLY, THIS PLACE DOES NOT EXIST.'As an eighteen-year-old called up for National Service, John Urwin thought his would be an ordinary tour of duty. He had no idea that when he was posted to Cyprus he would be recruited into a top-secret unit called 'the Sixteen', whose task was to assassinate key figures throughout the Middle East.He has never spoken about this elite unit in the 40 years since it was disbanded, but now he breaks his silence to tell their full amazing story. No government has ever officially confirmed the existence of the Sixteen and nothing has ever been revealed about this mysterious group. Their training in unarmed combat and weaponry was said to have surpassed that of the SAS.His description of their four key missions is explosive and a riveting account of the turbulent 1950s in the Middle East. The Cold War was approaching its height and there was a very real fear that there might be a nuclear conflict between the superpowers. When there was a mission to be undertaken that no government could be seen to endorse, the Sixteen would do the job. They underwent unique training to ensure they had completely eliminated all fearLong after he left the Sixteen, John Urwin continued to use his skills in the unarmed combat courses he ran, but nothing compared to the heart-stopping action he saw while in active service. This is an extraordinary account - no previous depiction of a military group, in book or movie, has remotely compared to the secrecy, skills and sheer professionalism of the Sixteen.
