Book excerpt: Some forty scholarly works, written by historians on both sides of the Border, form the basis for this non-scholarly attempt to provide a short, simple story of events between the Spanish conquest of Mexico five centuries ago and Mexico's dominance of itself since its independence of two hundred years. Better analysis of events here described in a factually chronologic way can be found in the writer's historical sources. A reader knowing little of Mexico's history can get a good start with this writer's try to show what the large and beautiful land to the south has met and overcome on the way to what it has, and what it will become.

Book excerpt: This book is "an invitation to the church to be bold in offering to the men and women of our culture a way of understanding which is based unashamedly on the revelation of God made in Jesus Christ and attested in scripture and the Tradition of the church". And, because no church and no culture is an island, that invitation to adopt "an authentically missionary approach to modern culture" needs to be extended to all Christians everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Via rigorous study of the legal arguments Spain developed to justify its acts of war and conquest, The Other Side of Empire illuminates Spain's expansionary ventures in the Mediterranean in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Andrew Devereux proposes and explores an important yet hitherto unstudied connection between the different rationales that Spanish jurists and theologians developed in the Mediterranean and in the Americas. Devereux describes the ways in which Spaniards conceived of these two theatres of imperial ambition as complementary parts of a whole. At precisely the moment that Spain was establishing its first colonies in the Caribbean, the Crown directed a series of Old World conquests that encompassed the Kingdom of Naples, Navarre, and a string of presidios along the coast of North Africa. Projected conquests in the eastern Mediterranean never took place, but the Crown seriously contemplated assaults on Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and Palestine. The Other Side of Empire elucidates the relationship between the legal doctrines on which Spain based its expansionary claims in the Old World and the New. The Other Side of Empire vastly expands our understanding of the ways in which Spaniards, at the dawn of the early modern era, thought about religious and ethnic difference, and how this informed political thought on just war and empire. While focusing on imperial projects in the Mediterranean, it simultaneously presents a novel contextual background for understanding the origins of European colonialism in the Americas.

Book excerpt: The author's search for his roots leads down paths unimagined or intended. The ensuing saga cuts a swath through frontier America, an America still young and yet unafraid. Great rewards are visible and attainable for an individual possessing raw courage and luck. Young Alanson Baker absolutely possesses courage and for awhile luck but, alas luck is fickle! Like his young nation, Alanson triumphs at times and at times suffers the wrenching pain of defeat. This is the entwined tale of a nation and a man, testing their conscience and their will to survive. Alanson, although not great, walked amongst the greats and was apart to great events; unfortunately, not all 'great' events are laudable. In time, history separates the good from the bad. Unfortunately this process usually comes to fruition only when both the conquering and conquered societies have long perished. In this tale, The Peccary attempts to tell the story of pioneer America from an interested but non-judgmental perspective. Likely some will be offended by this perspective of history while others may applaud, both reactions please the Peccary!
