Book The Other Preacher in Lynchburg

Download or read book The Other Preacher in Lynchburg written by John Killinger and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After teaching for a number of years, John Killinger, eager to be a pastor, was offered a church in Lynchburg, Virginia. It was in the 1980s when Jerry Falwell had a congregation there. Falwell had just started the Moral Majority movement and had helped to get Ronald Reagan elected president. In 1983, a Good Housekeeping national poll rated Jerry Falwell the second most respected man in America after Reagan. John Killinger's new book is in part a picture of Falwell and an exploration of his influence from the unique standpoint of a "rival" minister who says that his experience of his Lynchburg years is what soon turned him into one of Fundamentalism's most trenchant and outspoken critics. This is a fascinating story told with great grace and style about two very different men of faith, both struggling to capture hearts, minds, and souls. "Swift-moving and engaging." - Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Falwell carries on the legacy of his father—the internationally known fundamentalist and founder of the Moral Majority, Jerry Falwell—in this book about the single most important truth for believers. Reverend Falwell affirms in One Great Truth that regardless of situations Christians face, there is a simple, underlying, foundational truth that will enable them to have the strength needed to carry on and bring purpose to their lives. Above all else, it seems as if people are always looking to be significant. They are trying to determine what it will take to make a difference, to be a leader. In the midst of this challenge, people also face the trials and tribulations of life that seem to bring great discouragement. While many look to various sources for the answer of how to succeed and how to make it through their problems, the only answer that can actually bring success is found within the words of the Bible. The one great truth is that our focus must be on Christ. When everything we do revolves around serving Him, we find the great answers to all of life’s mysteries. Within the Bible we find the hope we need to forge ahead, despite life’s challenges and disappointments. The one great truth is that with God, all things are possible, and He will give us the strength and abilities we need to succeed.

Book George Buttrick s Guide to Preaching the Gospel

Download or read book George Buttrick s Guide to Preaching the Gospel written by Charles N. Davidson JR, and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Does the preacher now impress us as a ‘legate of the skies’? To many he is a pathetic figure, an anachronism, a stage-joke—an inoffensive little person jostled by the crowd, and wearing the expression of a startled rabbit. With one hand he holds a circular hat on a bewildered head and with the other desperately clutches an umbrella. The crowd pushes him from the sidewalk; the traffic shoots him back into the crowd. Some curse him; a few laugh; most are unaware of his existence.” (George Buttrick, Lyman Beecher Lectures, 1931). Whether we need preaching has been asked for hundreds of years, long before an age of media saturation from streaming 24-hour news, entertainment, politics, and sports. This question hounded George Buttrick, one of the most profound preachers of the twentieth century and often compared with Billy Graham. Buttrick offers a compelling answer to the question, but his answer remained hidden for 40 years until now. In George Buttrick’s Guide to Preaching the Gospel, we learn why the world needs competent preachers, what the preacher must preach about, and how the preacher goes about creating the sermon with daily discipline and several practiced skills, including research, charting, outlining, writing, and performance. These writings have never been published before and were found by his grandchildren after his death. A brief biography of Buttrick introduces this master orator and professor to readers who do not know his work.

Book excerpt: Biblical ABCs is a theological resistance primer. Its author, Kornelis Heiko Miskotte, was a Dutch pastor, theologian, and antifascist who lived and worked under the Nazi occupation of his country. Miskotte’s family hid Jews inside their home, and Miskotte facilitated underground Christian discussion groups. In 1941, he published an illegal pamphlet as a study guide for these groups. In an atmosphere saturated with propaganda and lies, Miskotte felt that Christians needed a refresher course in the basics of biblical language—an anti-Nazi catechism, as it were. Miskotte presents this instruction in twelve brief, poetic meditations on important terms drawn from the Bible. Like his teacher Karl Barth, Miskotte insists on the primacy of the Word, and like his imprisoned colleague Dietrich Bonhoeffer, he emphasizes the this-worldliness of the Old Testament. Miskotte also shows his deep debt to the Jewish theologian, Franz Rosenzweig. He begins his primer with the A of the biblical ABCs: the Name of God, the Tetragrammaton, which Miskotte sees as the cornerstone of all resistance to authoritarianism and truth decay.
