Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, Vol. 41: February 15, 1977; The Osteology, Classification, and Relationships of the Eel Family Ophichthidae Abstract. A classification of the genera of the apodal family Ophichthidae is proposed on the basis of internal and external morphology, with particular emphasis on osteological characters, Specimens of 89 ophichthid species from 44 genera and comparative material from ten other apodal families were prepared for osteological examination, usually by a trypsin-based staining and clearing technique, and critically compared. Forty-nine ophichthid genera are recognized and are distributed among six tribes in two subfamilies. Diagnostic characters for the recognition of genera include the shape and condition of elements of the gill arch and hyoid arch, number and placement of branchiostegal rays along the hyoid, sus pensorium elements, neurocrania, dentition, pectoral girdle elements, cephalic pore patterns, lateral line ossification, fin placement, and morphometric characters. The Ophichthidae are defined on the basis of their numerous overlapping branchiostegals, supraorbital canals united by a transverse commissure through the fused frontals, first and second epibranchial interconnections, absence of a palatine, and the separation of the pterygoid from the vomer. A monophyletic origin of the family from a congrid-like ancestor is proposed. An evolu tionary history of the Ophichthidae is suggested, in which the subfamily Myrophinae has separated into two tribes and the subfamily Ophichthinae has radiated into four tribes. The validity of the family name Ophichthidae is discussed. The family names Ophisuridae, Myridae, Myrophidae, Muraenichthyidae, Echelidae, Neenchelidae, Aoteidae, Acanthen chelyidae and Sphagebranchidae are synonyms of the name Ophichthidae. A comparison is made between an ophichthid classification based primarily on osteology and the previous classification, based primarily on external morphology. The results of two computer-pro grammed classification schemes of species relationships within a single tribe are compared with a classification developed using traditional methodology. Alternate hypotheses are pro posed to explain the log-normal inverse relationship between genera and the distribution of species among genera in the Ophichthidae. Book Fishes A Guide to Their Diversity

Download or read book Fishes A Guide to Their Diversity written by Philip A. Hastings and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-01-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are more than 33,000 species of living fishes, accounting for more than half of the extant vertebrate diversity on Earth. This unique and comprehensive reference showcases the basic anatomy and diversity of all 82 orders of fishes and more than 150 of the most commonly encountered families, focusing on their distinctive features. Accurate identification of each group, including its distinguishing characteristics, is supported with clear photographs of preserved specimens, primarily from the archives of the Marine Vertebrate Collection at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This diagnostic information is supplemented by radiographs, additional illustrations of particularly diverse lineages, and key references and ecological information for each group. An ideal companion to primary ichthyology texts, Fishes: A Guide to Their Diversity gives a broad overview of fish morphology arranged in a modern classification system for students, fisheries scientists, marine biologists, vertebrate zoologists, and everyday naturalists. This survey of the most speciose group of vertebrates on Earth will expand the appreciation of and interest in the amazing diversity of fishes.

Book Fishes and the Break up of Pangaea

Download or read book Fishes and the Break up of Pangaea written by Lionel Cavin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, in honour of Peter L. Forey, is about fishes as palaeobiogeographic indicators in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The last 250 million years in the history of Earth have witnessed the break-up of Pangaea, affecting the biogeography of organisms. Fishes occupy almost all freshwater and marine environments, making them a good tool to assess palaeogeographic models. The volume begins with studies of Triassic chondrichthyans and lungfishes, with reflections on Triassic palaeogeography. Phylogeny and distribution of Late Jurassic neoselachians and basal teleosts are broached, and are followed by five papers about the Cretaceous, dealing with SE Asian sharks, South American ray-finned fishes and coelacanths, European characiforms, and global fish palaeogeography. Then six papers cover Tertiary subjects, such as bony tongues, eels, cypriniforms and coelacanths. There is generally a good fit between fish phylogenies and the evolution of the palaeogeographical pattern, although a few discrepancies question details of current palaeogeographic models and/or some aspects of fish phylogeny.

Book Interrelationships of Fishes

Download or read book Interrelationships of Fishes written by Melanie L.J. Stiassny and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising by far the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates, fishes occupy a broad swathe of habitats ranging from the deepest ocean abyss to the highest mountain lakes. Such incredible ecological diversity and the resultant variety in lifestyle, anatomy, physiology and behavior, make unraveling the evolutionary history of fishes a daunting task. The successor of a classic volume by the same title, Interrelationships of Fishes, provides the latest in the "state of the art" of systematics and classification for many of the major groups of fishes. In providing a sound phylogenetic framework from leading authorities in the field, this book is an indispensable reference for a broad range of biologists, especially students of fish behavior, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and ecology--in fact, anyone who wishes to interpret their work on fishes in an evolutionary context. Provides thorough and comprehensive treatment of the Phylogency of fishes Assembles an International team of expert contributors Useful to a wide variety of fish biologists

Book Shore Fishes of Easter Island

Download or read book Shore Fishes of Easter Island written by John E. Randall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easter Island (Rapanui) is the most remote inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean and the easternmost in Oceania. Much has been written on the origin of its first inhabitants and the enormous stone statues they carved and erected, but little exists on the island’s biota. Knowing that very few species of fishes had been reported for Easter Island, John Randall went there in 1969, with the support of the National Geographic Society, to study the fish fauna. He was joined during revisits in 1988 and 1989 by the island’s medical doctor, Alfredo Cea. They published the Rapanui names of fishes in 1984. The total number of Easter Island shore fishes to a depth of 200 meters is only 139 species. However, an astounding 21.7 percent are known only from the island, second only to the Hawaiian Islands in the percentage of endemic fishes. Forty-four new species of fishes have been described, of which 25 are in scientific papers by Randall or by Randall and coauthors. Shore Fishes of Easter Island puts all of these fishes in one beautifully illustrated book with introductory chapters (Historical Review, Zoogeography, Marine Conservation, Materials and Methods).

Book The Freshwater Fishes of the Indian Region

Download or read book The Freshwater Fishes of the Indian Region written by K. C. Jayaram and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up to date compendium of all information available up to 1997 in respect of the freshwater fish fauna of this region . The classification adopted is generally after Nelson's Fishes of the World (1994), Howes (1991) with inputs from Eschmeyer's Genera of Fishes (1990). For Cyprinine genera the order of an arrangement proposed by Rainborth (1991) has been adhered to. In respect of nemacheilines the arrangement proposed by Banarescu and Nalbant (1995), Kottelat (1990) have been followed. As indicated in the title the Indian region as conceived here includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mayanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka within their political boundaries. Afghanistan and other border areas excluded. All primary freshwater fishes are definitely listed and many secondary and peripheral species that visit freshwater are also included. A uniform pattern of citation is adopted. Brief salient features of all the taxa up to orders are given. Descriptive details in respect of families and genera are provided more elaborately. Synonymies include the latest valid name, first reference, type-designations and more important pertinent references to that taxa. All citations have been checked, and cross-checked with the aid of Eschmeyer's work. Species are not described but listed alphabetically with their known range of distribution, but genera are described and arranged according to their known phylogenetic and intergeneric affinities. Keys are provided and simple drawings illustrating characters where needed are given. Synonyms, notes on species, genera, nomenclatural clarifications are given as foot-notes against relevant species marked with an asterisk, but in the foot-note the same serial number alone is cited and not the full species name. Figures depicting a representative of most genera can be seen; for many genera the more common species are illustrated as plate figures. A total of 272 genera with 852 species falling under 71 families and 16 orders are dealt with in this book. A glossary of 218 technical terms with adequate illustrations and a bibliography of 649 references are given. 241 figures and 18 plates are in the book. An addenda made up to date carries brief information of one new genus, 11 new species and one new subspecies.
