Book Ecology Ontogeny and Taxonomy of the Diverse Early Permian Dissorophoid Assemblage from Richards Spur Oklahoma

Download or read book Ecology Ontogeny and Taxonomy of the Diverse Early Permian Dissorophoid Assemblage from Richards Spur Oklahoma written by Bryan Michael Gee and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissorophoids are a diverse clade of temnospondyl amphibians that have long been of interest for their hypothesized relationship to modern lissamphibians and for their exceptional diversity in Permo-Carboniferous paleoenvironments of North America and western Europe. Beyond representing the earliest stages of lissamphibian evolution, dissorophoids represent arguably the most successful radiation of temnospondyls into terrestrial environments, in which they are both ubiquitous and remarkably diverse. The Richards Spur locality in Oklahoma, USA preserves the richest assemblage of terrestrial dissorophoids, positioning it as an excellent case study for furthering our understanding of dissorophoid evolution. To date most dissorophoid studies have been confined to the classic paleontological description of external anatomy. Using neutron computed tomography and paleohistology to augment the traditional descriptive approach, I provide greatly enhanced characterizations of morphology, ontogenetic trends, and phylogenetic patterns across the three terrestrial groups. For amphibamiforms, I produce the largest skeletochronological study of any Paleozoic tetrapod using femora of the stem lissamphibian Doleserpeton annectens, which identifies marked intraspecific variation and biannual responses to climatic harshness. For dissorophids, I produce the most detailed cranial ontogeny of any dissorophid to date for the eucacopine Cacops morrisi and provide the first records of three additional dissorophid taxa. High-resolution CT data reveals new complexities on osteoderm morphology that question traditional interpretations of osteoderm evolution in dissorophids. For trematopids, I describe a markedly immature specimen that highlights the challenges of gaps in the ontogenetic record, which are then tested in a phylogenetic context that reveals widespread confounding of inference by ontogenetic disparity for trematopids. Lastly, I produce tomographic comparisons of dissorophid and trematopid neurocrania and identify a conserved ontogenetic trajectory, a cryptic synotic tectum ossification of questionable homology to the amniote supraoccipital, and a surprising gap in the record of truly "adult" individuals of Cacops in the fossil record. Collectively, these studies greatly expand our understanding of the paleobiology of terrestrial dissorophoids through improved constraints of ontogenetic transformations and patterns of evolution across different regions of the skeleton. In turn, this work provides a more robust ontogenetic and phylogenetic framework through which to address broad questions of temnospondyl and lissamphibian evolution.

Book Amphibian Evolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rainer R. Schoch
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2014-03-19
  • ISBN : 1118759133
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Amphibian Evolution written by Rainer R. Schoch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the first vertebrates to conquer land and their long journey to become fully independent from the water. It traces the origin of tetrapod features and tries to explain how and why they transformed into organs that permit life on land. Although the major frame of the topic lies in the past 370 million years and necessarily deals with many fossils, it is far from restricted to paleontology. The aim is to achieve a comprehensive picture of amphibian evolution. It focuses on major questions in current paleobiology: how diverse were the early tetrapods? In which environments did they live, and how did they come to be preserved? What do we know about the soft body of extinct amphibians, and what does that tell us about the evolution of crucial organs during the transition to land? How did early amphibians develop and grow, and which were the major factors of their evolution? The Topics in Paleobiology Series is published in collaboration with the Palaeontological Association, and is edited by Professor Mike Benton, University of Bristol. Books in the series provide a summary of the current state of knowledge, a trusted route into the primary literature, and will act as pointers for future directions for research. As well as volumes on individual groups, the series will also deal with topics that have a cross-cutting relevance, such as the evolution of significant ecosystems, particular key times and events in the history of life, climate change, and the application of a new techniques such as molecular palaeontology. The books are written by leading international experts and will be pitched at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers in both the paleontological and biological sciences.

Book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear

Download or read book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear written by Jennifer A. Clack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of vertebrate hearing is of considerable interest in the hearing community. However, there has never been a volume that has focused on the paleontological evidence for the evolution of hearing and the ear, especially from the perspective of some of the leading paleontologists and evolutionary biologists in the world. Thus, this volume is totally unique, and takes a perspective that has never been taken before. It brings to the fore some of the most recent discoveries among fossil taxa, which have demonstrated the sort of detailed information that can be derived from the fossil record, illuminating the evolutionary pathways this sensory system has taken and the diversity it had achieved.

Download or read book Gaining Ground written by Jennifer A. Clack and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 370 million years ago, a distant relative of a modern lungfish began a most extraordinary adventure—emerging from the water and laying claim to the land. Over the next 70 million years, this tentative beachhead had developed into a worldwide colonization by ever-increasing varieties of four-limbed creatures known as tetrapods, the ancestors of all vertebrate life on land. This new edition of Jennifer A. Clack's groundbreaking book tells the complex story of their emergence and evolution. Beginning with their closest relatives, the lobe-fin fishes such as lungfishes and coelacanths, Clack defines what a tetrapod is, describes their anatomy, and explains how they are related to other vertebrates. She looks at the Devonian environment in which they evolved, describes the known and newly discovered species, and explores the order and timing of anatomical changes that occurred during the fish-to-tetrapod transition.

Book Major Evolutionary Radiations

Download or read book Major Evolutionary Radiations written by Paul D. Taylor and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume takes a close look at patterns of evolutionary change responsible for the astounding diversity of life and the major radiations seen in many taxonomic groups. Evidence from the fossil record shows that this process has not occurred at an even rate. Rather, relatively short but highly active periods of evolution have yielded the multiplication of species and morphological divergences, such as the emergence of flowering plants during the late Cretaceous. The contributors to this work, all recognized authorities in their fields, discuss general aspects of major radiations, and then focus on evolution in taxonomic groups with ample fossil records. The book is an important complement to the literature of extinction and paleontology, and will be read with interest by paleontologists and evolutionary biologists alike.
