Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Forms of Plane Quartic Curves: A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of Bryn Mawr College for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy I was born in Stilesville, Indiana, February 22, 1862. My early education was received in the public schools of Stilesville. I was graduated from the Indiana State Normal School in 1880 and spent the next ten years in preparatory and college teaching, and in study in the University of Michigan, from which I was graduated with the degree ph.b. In 1890. In 1890 - 91, and again in 1892 - 93, I held the Fellowship in Mathematics in Bryn Mawr College. Dur ing the year 1891 - 92 I held the European Fellowship of the Asso ciation of Collegiate Alumnae and studied in the University of Ber lin. For the first semester of the year 1892 - 93 I attended lectures at the Sorbonne, and then returned to Bryn Mawr College, where I remained until June, 1894 during the year 1893 - 94 I was Fellow by Courtesy. In June, 1894, I passed the examinations for the de gree of Doctor of Philosophy in Bryn Mawr College, my Major sub ject being Pure Mathematics and my Minors, Physics and Applied Mathematics, which I studied under Professors Mackenzie and Harkness and Dr. Buckingham. My graduate study in Mathematics was pursued under Professors Scott and Harkness, of Bryn Mawr College, and Professor Fuchs, of Berlin University. I also attended lectures by Professor Schwarz and Dr. Schlesinger, of Berlin University, and Professors Picard, Darboux, and Rafiy, of the Sorbonne. To all of these my acknowledgments are due; and to Professor Scott, under whose direction this paper was written, I find it hard adequately to ex press my indebtedness and my gratitude for the inspiration derived from her unfailing interest in my work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the in-and-Circumscribed Triangles of the Plane Rational Quartic Curve The last and most difficult case is when the six curves are all of them one and the same carve. It is to be noted that this formula gives the same number of triangles as has been found by the method used later. For example, in the case of the rational quartic, where a=4, A=6, a=18, the number of triangles is 8, which corresponds to that found on page 18. For the cuspidal quartic, where a=4, A=5, a=16, the number is two, which also corresponds to the number found on page 22. In this paper it is proposed to look into the existence and actual number of such triangles for the following types of rational quartics: I. Quartic with three double points. II. Quartic with one double point and a tacnode. III. Quartic with a triple point. IV. Quartic with two double points and a cusp. This discussion was led up to by preliminary work on the three-cusped rational quintic. Upon subjection to a quadratic transformation this curve goes into a rational quartic, which, it will be shown, has triangles of the kind here mentioned. Accordingly, it will first be proved that the quintic can have certain conditions imposed upon its coefficients so that it may acquire an additional cusp or a tacnode without degenerating.
